Sunderland close to appointing Roma's Florent Ghisolfi as director of football
Sunderland are close to appointing Florent Ghisolfi as the club's director of football. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman will remain at newly-promoted Sunderland and will work alongside Ghisolfi, who was Roma's sporting director for 2024-25. Ghisolfi had interest from other clubs including Newcastle United, who are assessing candidates to succeed outgoing sporting director Paul Mitchell, with interest also from Juventus, Fiorentina and Saudi Arabia. Advertisement A former midfielder, Ghisolfi led Roma to a top-five finish in Serie A for the first time in five seasons last term, missing out on Champions League qualification to Juventus by one point. The 40-year-old, who decided to leave Roma this summer, had his first sporting director role at Lens, who won promotion back to Ligue 1 during his time at the club before later qualifying for the Champions League. Ghisolfi worked at Nice with INEOS between 2022 and 2024, where head coach Francesco Farioli had wished to retain his services before Roma saw off interest from Monaco to secure his signature last summer. Sunderland are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, having defeated Sheffield United in last month's Championship play-off final. ()

Lawrence Shankland trains with Rangers ace James Tavernier
The out-of-contract Hearts skipper joined Tavernier alongside Newcastle United and England ace Kieran Trippier for a warm-weather coaching camp in Dubai. Both players are clearly keen to keep themselves sharp ahead of pre-season, with Tavernier due back at Rangers on Monday morning for Russell Martin's first day with the players. Shankland is without a club, and while Derek McInnes hopes to convince the striker to re-sign at Tynecastle, the Scotland international is attracting interest from south of the border, having been heavily linked with West Brom, as well as other clubs abroad. Elite performance coach Chris Bowman took to Instagram to share an image of the Scottish Premiership rivals after they took part in an intense session in the sizzling UAE sun. Bowman shared several clips of the Shankland, Tavernier and Trippier being put through their paces. Read more: Posting this photo, he captioned the image: "Tough one in the cooker today." It is worth noting that both Shankland and Tavernier are represented by Storm Sports X agency. Throughout Shankland's time at Hearts, he has consistently been touted with a move to his boyhood heroes at Ibrox.

Bayer Leverkusen in active talks to sign Jarell Quansah
Bayer Leverkusen are negotiating with Liverpool to sign centre-back Jarell Quansah this summer, according to Sky Sports. Having sanctioned the sale of Florian Wirtz to the Reds for a record fee, the German giants are looking to acquire Quansah in a separate deal. Advertisement Leverkusen needs to strengthen its backline following the departure of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich on a free transfer. With Odilon Kossounou completing his permanent move to Atalanta for €20 million, Die Werkself are planning to invest in a new centre-back in the transfer window. Quansah's future has been the subject of speculation due to the uncertainty over his role with the Reds. The English defender is behind Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in the pecking order. The 22-year-old made 25 appearances in all competitions last season, proving to be a solid back-up for manager Arne Slot. Newcastle United have expressed interest in Quansah, and the Merseysiders are holding out for around £40 million for him. Advertisement Leverkusen have an edge in Quansah's pursuit due to their good relationship with the Reds, who have raided them for Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong this summer. The English centre-back would be a solid addition to Leverkusen's defensive options alongside Piero Hincapie and Edmond Tapsoba. Quansah will look to showcase his quality in the ongoing European U21 Championship. He needs to play regularly at the highest level to increase his chances of securing a place in The Three Lions' squad for the World Cup next year. Despite losing some key players, Leverkusen will look to sustain their success under new manager Erik ten Hag. They are keen on recruiting a top-quality attacking midfielder as Wirtz's replacement, with Nico Paz and Arda Guler topping their wishlist.

Liverpool pile PRESSURE on Alexander Isak transfer
Liverpool want to sign Alexander Isak this summer and they're really piling the pressure on. Will Newcastle United feel it? It's no secret that Liverpool dream of signing Alexander Isak this summer. He's the ultimate striker for them, ticking essentially every single box. Advertisement The real question is whether a deal could happen. Newcastle United qualified for the UEFA Champions League, after all, and haven't got much incentive to sell. But they do have some incentive. Isak is their most valuable player and as he enters the prime of his career, there's a good chance he fancies moving to a title-challenging team. That on its own won't convince Newcastle to sell but the fact they pretty much need to sell before buying might. After all, they'd rather sell one player for an awful lot of money to create PSR room than rip up the team by selling several. Any deal, though, would need to happen relatively soon. Newcastle can't afford Isak replacements to leave the market, while they want to make sure they've got plenty of time to actually spend that cash on players they want. Advertisement Liverpool know this, too. That's why they haven't given up on signing Isak and now they're really putting the pressure on. Liverpool turn up the heat on Alexander Isak and Newcastle Newcastle want to make this decision themselves, of course, so all Liverpool can really do is hurry them along. Publicly sourcing alternatives is the way to do that. And all reports point to them doing just that. Fabrizio Romano this week admitted that Liverpool are in talks with Hugo Ekitiké - seen by many as the ultimate Isak alternative. Then there are reports out of Italy that Liverpool are discussing Victor Osimhen with Napoli. Again, he's an Isak alternative, fitting a relatively similar profile. Newcastle will see this and know that Liverpool are considering alternatives. If they sign one of them, the Isak deal is completely off and the decision is taken from them.
