Largest Princess Diana auction' features frocks, hats and bags, World News

NEWBRIDGE, Ireland — From colourful frocks and hats to handbags and shoes, items belonging to the late Princess Diana go under the hammer this month in what Julien's Auctions says is the largest collection of her fashion to go to auction.
The live and online Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection sale will take place on June 26 at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, offering an array of fashion items Diana wore.
"This is the largest Princess Diana auction because we have over 100 items from her amazing life and career...keeping in mind Diana herself... sold over 70 of her dresses... back in 1997 to raise money for her charity," Martin Nolan, executive director and co-founder of Julien's Auctions, told Reuters on Monday (June 9). He was speaking at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge in Ireland during a pre-sale exhibition.
Among the highlights is a 1988 silk floral dress by Bellville Sassoon, dubbed the "caring dress" because Diana wore it several times on hospital visits, with a price estimate of US$200,000 (S$260,000) to US$300,000.
A cream silk embroidered evening gown Catherine Walker designed for Diana's 1986 Gulf tour has a similar price tag, while a Bruce Oldfield two-piece yellow floral ensemble she wore for Royal Ascot in 1987 is estimated at US$100,000 to US$200,000.
Other sale items include a Dior handbag gifted to her by former French first lady Bernadette Chirac in 1995, a sketch of Diana's 1981 wedding dress with tulle fabric cut-offs from when she married then Prince Charles in 1981 and a peach hat she wore for her honeymoon send-off.
The auction also includes pieces belonging to other British royals including the late Queen Elizabeth II and the queen mother.
Nolan said Julien's Auctions had previously sold a dress belonging to Diana for US$1.14 million.
"People do consider these items as an asset class now, because if people own these items today, chances are in years to come they will sell them for more than what they pay for (at) auction," he said.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of Diana's items will go to charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.
The pre-sale exhibition in Newbridge will run until June 17.

Greenpeace joins protests against gala Bezos wedding in Venice

REUTERS/Yara Nardi A large banner against Amazon founder Jeff Bezos lies on the ground, placed by Greenpeace Italy activists along with others in St. Mark's Square, ahead of the expected wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, in Venice, Italy, June 23, 2025. REUTERS/Yara Nardi VENICE, Italy - Global environmental lobby Greenpeace added its voice on Monday to protests against this week's celebrity wedding in Venice between American tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and journalist Laura Sanchez. The event, expected to attract some 200 guests including U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as scores of stars from film, fashion and business, has been dubbed "the wedding of the century". But some locals see the celebration as the latest sign of the brash commodification of a beautiful but fragile city that has long been overrun with tourism while steadily depopulating. Activists from Greenpeace Italy and UK group "Everyone hates Elon" (Musk) unfolded a giant banner in central St Mark's Square with a picture of Bezos laughing and a sign reading: "If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax." Local police arrived to talk to activists and check their identification documents, before they rolled up their banner. "The problem is not the wedding, the problem is the system. We think that one big billionaire can't rent a city for his pleasure," Simona Abbate, one of the protesters, told Reuters. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and regional governor Luca Zaia have defended the wedding, arguing that it will bring an economic windfall to local businesses, including the motor boats and gondolas that operate its myriad canals. Zaia said the celebrations were expected to cost 20-30 million euros ($23-$34 million). Bezos will also make sizable charity donations, including a million euros for Corila, an academic consortium that studies Venice's lagoon ecosystem, Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper and the ANSA news agency reported on Sunday. Earlier this month, anti-Bezos banners were hung from St Mark's bell tower and from the famed Rialto bridge, while locals threatened peaceful blockades against the event, saying Venice needed public services and housing, not VIPs and over-tourism. The exact dates and locations of the glitzy nuptials are being kept confidential, but celebrations are expected to play out over three days, most likely around June 26-28. Pixar has its worst box-office opening ever with Elio

Despite positive reviews, the turnout for the animated space adventure Elio was much worse than Pixar had expected, collecting an estimated US$21 million on its opening weekend. PHOTO: PIXAR Pixar has its worst box-office opening ever with Elio NEW YORK – Pixar knew that Elio, an original space adventure, would most likely struggle in its first weekend at the box office. Animated movies based on original stories have become harder sells in theatres, even for the once-unstoppable Pixar. At a time when streaming services have proliferated and the broader economy is unsettled, families want assurance that spending the money for tickets will be worth it. But the turnout for Elio was worse – much worse – than even Pixar had expected. The film cost at least US$250 million (S$323 million) to make and market. It collected an estimated US$21 million from the evening of June 19 to June 22 at theatres in North America, according to Comscore, which compiles box-office data. It was Pixar's worst opening-weekend result. The previous bottom was Elemental, which arrived to US$30 million in 2023. In May, when the Elio marketing campaign began to hit high gear, Pixar and its corporate owner, Disney, had hoped that it would, in the worst-case scenario, match the Elemental number. Instead, it fell 30 per cent short. In wide release overseas, Elio collected an additional US$14 million, on a par with the initial international results for Elemental. Quality did not appear to be a factor. Reviews for Elio were mostly positive, and ticket buyers gave the movie an A grade in CinemaScore exit polls. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score stood at 91 per cent positive on June 22. On June 22, Disney said it hoped a broader audience would find Elio over the coming weeks. The company pointed to Elemental, which overcame weak initial sales to ultimately collect nearly $500 million worldwide. ‘Recovering at home': Giorgio Armani will miss two shows at Milan Men's Fashion Week

Italian designer Giorgio Armani, who will turn 91 in July, will miss his group's catwalk events at Milan's Men's Fashion Week. PHOTO: REUTERS 'Recovering at home': Giorgio Armani will miss two shows at Milan Men's Fashion Week MILAN – Giorgio Armani will not attend his group's two shows at Milan's Men's Fashion Week as he is currently recovering at home, a company statement said on June 20. This will be the first time in his career that he will miss one of his catwalk events. The Italian designer, who will turn 91 in July, will not be at the Emporio Armani catwalk on June 28 or Giorgio Armani show on June 30, the statement said. It did not expand on his current health condition. Italian newswires reported on June 20 that Armani had been in a Milan hospital for some days. 'Mr Armani has worked with his usual dedication on the collections that will be presented,' the company statement said. It added that although he could not be there in person, he will follow every step of the shows. Known as 'Re Giorgio' – King Giorgio – the designer is known for overseeing every detail of his collection and every aspect of his business, from advertising to fixing models' hair as they head out onto the catwalk. At the end of all his shows, he comes out from backstage and onto the catwalk to greet his audience. In his absence, head of menswear design Leo Dell'Orco will be doing so on his behalf, the group added. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
