Ramazan ration distribution faces setbacks
Due to inflation, a record decline has been noticed in the distribution of free Ramazan ration to deserving families by philanthropists and social and welfare organisations during the current year. After a long time, inflation reached the country's highest level ever, which led to a 60 to 70 percent decrease in the distribution of free ration and Eid gifts.
Many philanthropists and organisations that previously provided free rations to 100 families annually have now reduced this number to 25 to 30 families. Similarly, family groups that used to distribute free ration among 40 to 50 families have completely halted the distribution this year, opting instead to give small amounts of cash to one or two families individually.
Social organisations have also experienced a record decline in Ramazan donations this year, forcing them to shut down their Ramazan ration programmes.
Social organisations have also reported a significant drop in donations, forcing many to shut down their Ramazan ration programmes. A leader of a welfare group told The Express Tribune that they used to distribute ration packages containing flour, lentils, rice, sugar, and other essentials at a cost of Rs2,700 to Rs3,300 per bag. Last year, they had to reduce their distribution from 100 to 80 families. With prices now soaring to Rs5,500 to Rs6,000 per package, they have switched to providing Rs2,000 in cash to 100 families instead.
Another social organisation leader said that their group, which previously served 100 to 120 families, has now been forced to reduce the weight of ration bags and limit support to just 50 families due to financial constraints.
The decline in aid has severely impacted low-income families, particularly widows and orphans, who are struggling to meet basic needs. The heads of Al-Mustafa Trust, Sheikh Nadeem Shehzad and Secretary Muhammad Sharif, said that due to limited funds, they have reduced their distribution from 200 ration packs in past years to just 40 this year. If inflation continues, they may further cut down or shift entirely to cash support next year.
In the Rawalpindi District Court, traditional ration distributions by the Salari Chamber and Advocate Qayyum Tarazi have also been reduced. The Salari Chamber has stopped its aid completely, while Advocate Tarazi has slashed distribution by more than 50 percent.
Even government and political groups have scaled back their assistance. The Rawalpindi deputy commissioner did not distribute any free rations this year, and prominent parties like Jamaat-e-Islami and Awami Tehreek have also significantly reduced their aid.
Widows like Sakeena Bibi and Khala Mukhtiyari expressed disappointment over the situation, stating that for the first time, they received no free rations from any source this Ramazan.

The Punjab government has launched an expansive Rs50 billion plan to scale up shrimp farming across the province, aiming to transform the sector into a major contributor to the local economy and export earnings. Key components of the initiative include the development of a model fish market in Lahore and three state-of-the-art shrimp value chain estates in South Punjab's Muzaffargarh district. According to the Department of Fisheries, a 3,000-acre shrimp farming site will be established in Rakh Ali Wala, Muzaffargarh, with an initial investment of Rs10 billion. Additionally, value chain estates in Head Muhammad Wala, Rakh Ali Wala, and Shahgarh will be developed at a combined cost of Rs40 billion. The Punjab government has earmarked Rs3 billion in the upcoming fiscal budget to initiate these projects. These facilities are expected to not only enhance shrimp production but also generate employment and stimulate seafood exports. In Lahore, the government plans to construct a modern model fish market at a projected cost of Rs10 billion. The facility will include cold storage, value addition units, and a streamlined supply chain network to improve market access for fish and shrimp farmers. An initial budget allocation of Rs848.6 million has been approved to commence construction.

COAS makes pitch for trade with US
Listen to article Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has said that Pakistan does not seek security assistance or aid from the United States, but rather trade, investment and mutual respect. Speaking at a closed-door session with senior scholars, policy experts, analysts and representatives of leading international media outlets in Washington, the army chief praised President Donald Trump as "one of the greatest and fantastic leaders", a day after their landmark meeting at the White House. "We want to be treated with respect and dignity," Field Marshal Munir was quoted as saying by several participants of the session, who spoke to The Express Tribune on condition of anonymity. According to at least three attendees, the army chief addressed a wide range of issues, including Pakistan-US bilateral ties, counter-terrorism, economic challenges, internal social dynamics, and the country's democratic journey. His candid and confident tone impressed many in the room. "This was a different Asim Munir than the one we saw during his first visit to Washington," said one participant. "He was more composed, self-assured and spoke without notes for over an hour. Last time, he barely made an opening statement." Contrary to narratives often pushed by India, attendees noted that Field Marshal Munir did not display any inclination towards radical or religious extremism. Instead, he referenced a historic speech by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah emphasizing equal rights for all citizens, regardless of religion, caste, or creed. On foreign relations, he asserted that Pakistan's ties with China and the United States are not mutually exclusive. "China has never asked us to limit our engagement with the US," he stated, urging Washington to view Pakistan through its own lens and not through the prism of China, India or Afghanistan. The army chief also addressed democratic development in Pakistan, acknowledging that while Pakistan may not have achieved an ideal democracy yet, it aspires to build a democratic system modeled on strong institutions like those in the United States. When asked about his two-hour-long meeting with President Trump, the field marshal declined to share specific details but described the interaction as "fantastic," praising Trump's "global vision" and "strategic clarity." Touching on the volatile Middle East situation, Field Marshal Munir called for diplomacy and peaceful resolution of the Israel-Iran conflict. He also highlighted the destabilizing role India has played in the region, accusing New Delhi of supporting proxy groups to foment unrest inside Pakistan. Overall, observers described the engagement as one of the most candid and strategically focused interactions by a Pakistani military leader in recent memory. Meanwhile, a statement issued by the ISPR said the interaction with prominent US think tanks and representatives of the strategic affairs institutions, provided an opportunity to articulate Pakistan's principled stance on key regional and global issues, and to deepen understanding of Pakistan's strategic outlook. In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff highlighted Pakistan's unwavering commitment to regional peace and stability, and its constructive role in fostering a rules-based international order. The field marshal eluded to the details and analysis of the Maarka-e-Haq, Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and elaborated on Pakistan's perspective on terrorism, noting the malign influence of certain regional actors in sponsoring and perpetuating terrorism as a tool of hybrid warfare. The COAS emphasised that Pakistan has been on the front lines of the global war against terrorism, having rendered immense sacrifices — both human and economic — in pursuit of a safer and more secure world. Field Marshal Asim Munir shed light on Pakistan's remarkable untapped potential, particularly in the domains of information technology, agriculture, and its vast and underexploited reserves in the mining and mineral sectors. He invited international partners to explore collaborative opportunities in these sectors to unlock shared prosperity. The army chief also provided a detailed exposition of Pakistan's balanced approach to regional and global conflicts, advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law. He reaffirmed that Pakistan continues to play a responsible and proactive role in mitigating regional tensions and promoting cooperative security frameworks. The discussion further included an evaluation of the long-standing Pakistan-US partnership. The COAS underlined the historical convergences between the two nations, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, regional security, and economic development. He underscored the immense potential for a broader, multidimensional relationship built upon mutual respect, shared strategic interests, and economic interdependence. Participants noted the openness and clarity of the COAS's perspectives and appreciated Pakistan's consistent and principled policies. The interaction was marked by a spirit of mutual understanding and was widely regarded as a positive step toward enhancing strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States. This engagement reflects Pakistan's commitment to transparent diplomacy, international engagement, and the pursuit of peaceful coexistence through principled and proactive dialogue.

100,000 sanitary workers to get reward money
LAHORE: Reward money announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will be distributed among more than 100,000 workers of the Suthra Punjab Programme on June 21 (today) for their performance during the grand operation on Eid-ul-Azha. In this regard, a ceremony will be held at the tehsil level across Punjab in which the workers will be invited. This decision was taken during a meeting that was chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq on Friday. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Asia Gul, Additional Secretary Ahmer Kaifi, Deputy Commissioners and chief officers of municipal bodies were also present. The Minister said that instead of calling all the workers on the same day, if necessary, the reward money can be distributed among the remaining people on the next day. He said the Chief Minister had announced the reward of Rs 10,000 each for over 100,000 workers who worked hard and with commitment during the hot weather on the Eid days. 'The workers worked hard during the scorching sun, and thus we saw exemplary cleanliness on Eid-ul-Azha. Hence, the Punjab government announced the reward to recognise the hard work put in by the workers,' he added. He directed the officials concerned to invite elected representatives to the ceremonies, observing that public representatives also played a full role in the awareness campaign during the grand operation. On this occasion, the Secretary said that bank drafts will be transparently given to the workers, adding that no worker of the Clean Punjab Programme should be deprived of the prize money.
