The 17th Straits Forum Held in Xiamen, China: Promoting Cross-Strait Folk Exchanges and Integrated Development

XIAMEN, CHINA - Media OutReach Newswire - 18 June 2025 - The opening ceremony of the 17th Straits Forum was held in the morning of the 15th in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China. As the largest-scaled, widest-ranging and most influential folk exchange event across the Taiwan Strait, guests from both sides of the Taiwan Strait gathered together to discuss the beautiful vision of cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation.
This session of the Straits Forum focused on the theme of "Expanding Folk Exchanges and Deepening Integrated Development". It set up four major sections, namely grassroots exchanges, youth exchanges, cultural exchanges, and economic exchanges, with 56 series of activities arranged. The main venue of the forum was in Xiamen, while related activities were held in relevant prefecture-level cities in Fujian and the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone. More than 7,000 people from all walks of life in Taiwan were invited to participate.
Ma Ying-jeou, the former chairperson of the Kuomintang who attends the Straits Forum for the first time, stated in his speech at the meeting that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is the common aspiration of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The natural bond of Chinese people on both sides, who share the same roots and origin, cannot be severed, and non-governmental exchanges across the Strait are unstoppable.
Currently, Fujian is steadfastly expanding economic and trade cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, deepening folk exchanges between Fujian and Taiwan, and enhancing the well-being of Taiwan compatriots, so as to make new contributions to the great cause of promoting the reunification of the motherland. Xiamen has earnestly implemented the Opinions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on Supporting Fujian in Exploring a New Path for Cross-Strait Integrated Development and Building a Cross-Strait Integrated Development Demonstration Zone. It continues to take the lead in piloting innovations for cross-strait integrated development, promoting integration through connectivity, preferential policies, and emotional bonds, so as to create more development opportunities and broader space for Taiwan compatriots.
It is reported that the Straits Forum has been successfully held for 16 sessions, with nearly 800 activities of various types carried out. A total of more than 350,000 person-times of compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait have participated, among whom over 140,000 person-times are Taiwan compatriots. The Straits Forum has effectively played an important role in expanding cross-Strait folk exchanges and deepening cross-Strait integrated development.

Iran adapts to maintain oil exports during conflict, trackers say

Iran is maintaining crude oil supply by loading tankers one at a time and moving floating oil storage much closer to China, two vessel tracking firms told Reuters, as the country seeks to keep a key source of revenue while under attack from Israel. The conflict between Iran and Israel which broke out last week poses a fresh hurdle for Iran, which uses a shadow fleet of tankers to conceal their origin and skirt U.S. sanctions reinstated in 2018 over its nuclear programme. Crude exports from Iran, OPEC's third-largest producer, mainly head to China. Loadings have so far been largely unaffected by the conflict with Israel, the trackers said. Iran has loaded 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil so far this week, marking a five-week high, the latest data from analytics firm Kpler showed. Energy infrastructure in both countries has been targeted in missile exchanges between the two countries, including the Haifa oil refinery in Israel and Iran's South Pars gas field, though Iran's major crude exporting facility at Kharg island has so far been spared. All of the loadings from Kharg Island this week took place from the site's eastern jetty, said Homayoun Falakshai, head of crude oil analysis at tracking firm Kpler. Kharg Island is situated deep inside the Persian Gulf, some 30 km off the Middle Eastern nation's south west coast. "NIOC may believe it is less risky than the other main jetty located on the western side, in open waters," Falakshai said, referring to Iran's state oil firm National Iranian Oil Co. Large oil tankers are now approaching Kharg Island one at a time, leaving the second jetty on the western side of the island unused for several days, with 15-16 more Iranian tankers scattered across the wider Persian Gulf area. Iranian oil exports have been steady so far this year at around 1.7 million bpd, the International Energy Agency said on Tuesday, despite U.S. sanctions on Chinese customers since March. Iran has moved part of its 40 million barrel floating storage fleet, which sits on 36 different vessels, much closer to China to minimise the impact of any disrupions on buyers, ship tracking firm Vortexa told Reuters. Around ten tankers, carrying approximately 8 million barrels of Iranian crude, are now stationed directly offshore China, Vortexa said, moving from the Singapore area where a further 20 million barrels are located. The remaining 12 or so million barrels were in the Persian Gulf at the start of the month, Vortexa added, but their current location was not clear. Having floating storage allows tankers to load crude oil without an immediate fixed destination to head to. "Iran has been moving these barrels eastwards even without firm orders to strategically place the barrels closer to the end buyers in a time of heightened geopolitical risk," Vortexa's senior China market analyst Emma Li said Moving barrels closer to China would offset the impact of up to two weeks of disrupted Iranian loadings, Vortexa added. China not expected to provide military support to Iran in war with Israel, expert says

China is not expected to come to Iran's defence in its war with Israel, now entering its seventh day, a Chinese expert told The National. 'In the war between Russia and Ukraine, Foreign Minister Wang Yi was very clear that China stood with peace and not with either side. So this time, whether supporting Israel or Iran, China's position remains the same,' said Zhou Rong, a senior analyst at the Renmin University of China. 'China will do its best to promote peace in the region. It will act within its capacity. We will do more to support Iran, morally, but no one – not China or any other country – can stop Israel's attacks. All we can do is try to form a united front against Israel's aggressive behaviour and help Iran with some level of resistance. But even then, China still hopes to stop the war between the two sides.' The conflict flared last week, when Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a co-ordinated attack involving air and drone strikes against Iranian nuclear, military and regime targets. The strikes killed senior commanders in the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and nuclear scientists. At least 639 people, including 263 civilians, have been killed in Iran and more than 1,300 wounded, a Washington-based Iranian human rights group said. In retaliation, Iran has fired about 400 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel, killing at least 24 people and wounding hundreds. China's President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for all parties, but "especially Israel", to stop hostilities in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese state media reported. "Parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease hostilities as soon as possible to prevent a cyclical escalation and resolutely avoid the spillover of the war," Mr Xi said, according to Xinhua. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said this week that the country had begun evacuating its citizens from Israel and Iran. Chinese authorities are in communication with Iran, Israel and various parties to push for a ceasefire, ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a press briefing. Fears are mounting over potential US involvement in the war. President Donald Trump on Wednesday remained ambiguous over whether American forces would strike Iranian nuclear sites and said Tehran had made contact in a bid to negotiate. His comments came a day after he appeared to be preparing for war and demanded the 'unconditional surrender' of the Iranian government. 'You don't know. I may do it, I may not do it – I mean, nobody knows what I'm going to do,' Mr Trump said at the White House during a ceremony to install new flagpoles. Mr Zhou believes Mr Trump is concerned about the possibility of the war spreading across the entire region. 'We know the US has major military bases in Kuwait, Pakistan and Qatar. Unless those bases are directly targeted, Mr Trump is likely to hesitate before engaging the US in a war against Iran,' he said. 'Trump is weighing whether to attack Iran or increase pressure to force it into a deal with the US." Mr Zhou said that Israel's recent strikes had killed several experienced IRGC generals. "These targeted killings will continue,' he noted. 'The problem for Iran is that it cannot mount a decent, large-scale retaliation against Israel. Some of the new officers promoted after the deaths of seasoned commanders are inexperienced. In this case, Iran's retaliation against Israel will be weaker.'

Putin and Xi condemn Israel over its Iran strikes, call for diplomatic solution

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call on Thursday during which both leaders condemned Israel for its strikes on Iran and agreed de-escalation was needed, the Kremlin said. Both men "strongly condemn Israel's actions, which violate the UN Charter and other norms of international law," Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters. "Both Moscow and Beijing fundamentally believe that there is no military solution to the current situation and issues related to Iran's nuclear programme. "This solution must be achieved exclusively through political and diplomatic means," said Ushakov. Russia has warned of catastrophe should the Israel-Iran conflict, now in its seventh day, escalate further, and has urged the US not to join Israel's bombardment. Putin has been in touch with US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in recent days and has repeatedly said Russia stands ready to mediate between the warring sides. Thus far, no one has taken up Russia's offer. On Thursday, Putin reiterated that proposition in his phone call with Xi, a close ally. The Chinese leader expressed support for the idea, Ushakov said, "as he believes it could serve to de-escalate the current acute situation." The two men agreed to keep in close contact in the coming days.
