Leon Thomas's list of connections is extensive.
At first known as Andre Harris fromVictorious, the Brooklyn native started off with acting as his primary creative pursuit, making music on the side. Thomas worked with mentorBabyfacein his Los Angeles studio and primarily produced for other artists at the time, his castmateAriana Grandeincluded.
He has since racked up production and writing credits from a star-studded selection of musicians includingSZA,Drake,Rick Ross,6LACK,Post MaloneandTy Dolla $ign– being the first artist to get signed to Ty's EZMNY Records.
Back in September, Thomas dropped his second solo albumMUTT,which cemented his spot as a contemporary R&B solo artist. Features came from Ty,Masego,Wale, Axlfolie,Baby RoseandFreddie Gibbs.
Aweng Chuol is another one of Thomas' A-list companions. The fellow creative multi-hyphenate and model met Thomas through mutual friends and industry events, includingTeyana Taylor'sMet GalaAfter Party, and has long been a strong supporter of his music career.
Fresh offHEEL's release and aBETBest New Artist win, Thomas stopped by the Hypebeast studio for a conversation with Chuol.
Aweng Chuol: Who is Leon Thomas?
Leon Thomas: Leon Thomas is a kid from Brooklyn – a writer, producer, artist, actor, and all-around creative. New York City really shaped me; living here, I've been surrounded by so many different cultures and musical influences, and all of that showed me how to get down.
AC: A multifaceted king! Do you believe in astrology? What's your sign?
LT: I'm a Leo. What about you?
AC: That's why you're talented. I'm a Libra.
LT: Okay, okay, I see you.
AC: We're cool, we're cool. [laughs] How old are you right now?
LT: I'm 31, on the way to 32. I should start claiming it. I'll be 32 on August 1.
AC: I'm still not over yourCoachellaperformance…
LT: That was insane.Ty Dolla $ignbrought me out during his set for 'MUTT,' and then he surprised me by bringing outGeorge Clinton. Funk legend. He made me this fly ass all-white hat that he gave me during the performance. It was almost like a crowning ceremony. Passing the torch and keeping the funk alive.
AC: The culture is so proud of you, honestly. So, so proud of you. Was that your first Coachella?
LT: It was my first time performing there. I've been to the festival about five times. I like to go out there and just have fun.
AC: I've never been to Coachella. I like watching y'all from home [laughs]…
LT: You gotta pull up to the desert!
AC: I don't know. The crowd … me and crowds …
LT: Nah, you're a superstar. They'd have you in the back. You wouldn't have to worry about that.
AC: If you were to headline a festival, which special guests would you bring out?
LT: I'd love to bring outAnderson .Paak. He's so multifaceted and tight. I'd also love to haveH.E.R. come out. She'd be a great guest. We could do a little guitar duel on stage.
AC: Tell me more about yourTiny Deskperformance – I know there's a story there, too.
LT: That was wild. We almost missed our flight. It was snowing. There was a blizzard. Also, my grandfather had passed away about a week before, so the mental space I was in was really heavy, but I was able to use those emotions in the performance, and looking back on it, I'm so proud of myself and the team.
AC: I know your grandfather was a big inspiration for you.
LT: A huge inspiration. Any time I'd be in New York, he'd pick me up and we'd run around the city.
AC: I've met him in New York. He was a handsome fella.
LT: Real fly man.
AC: Rest in peace to a king [...] How does it feel to be a Grammy winner?
LT: Life-changing. I had a Grammy on my lock screen for about two years. It was crazy to go from holding it on my phone to holding an actual Grammy after that.
AC: The manifestation is crazy.
LT: Having that in my living room now is fly.
AC: How did your dog Terry inspire the album?
LT: The album at large was inspired by relationships and situationships that didn't work out, but I was able to use my dog as a metaphor for this. He's an untrained mutt.
AC: He's a menace.
LT: He's a wild German Shepherd. So he was perfect to tell the story.
'I had a Grammy on my lock screen for about two years. It was crazy to go from holding it on my phone to holding an actual Grammy after that.' – Leon Thomas
AC: You've written and produced for so many other artists – Ty Dolla, 6LACK, SZA, Post Malone. How does writing and producing for yourself differ from writing and producing for other artists?
LT: When I'm doing a song for myself, I get to write all the rules. I do a lot of producing for other artists now. That makes me feel like a private chef. If they want steak that day, they're getting steak that day. You have to cater to the other artist. When it's just me, it's whatever I feel.
AC: How did you select the features forMUTT?
LT: The features are just my friends.Walebecame a good friend of mine while we were making that record. To this day, we still call each other and talk about girls and life, and this industry thing.Baby Roseand I were friends before the record, but the album made us closer. I'm really proud of the features on the deluxe, too –Big Sean,Kehlani,Halle Bailey.
AC: Would you ever collaborate with Victoria Justice on a music project?
LT: I'd definitely collaborate with her on music. We've talked about it in the past. We work with a mutual producer, Toby Gad, and he was trying to set up some sessions, but it's just been tough with everyone's schedules.
AC: It's always the schedule.
LT: Scheduling is always what gets in the way when I try and link up with any of my friends to make music.
AC: It's so hard. And then when you actually find time to hang out, all you want to do is just spend time together and not work.
LT: Exactly.
AC:Victoriouswas my childhood show in Australia. What was your favorite part of filming the show?
LT: Having real friends. We all did our last two years of high school together and spent all of our time kicking it. It was nice to be surrounded by a group of talented people my age. We were like a family. We looked out for each other – even after the show ended. We're very protective of each other.
'You really built this.' – Aweng Chuol
AC: Were you working on music while filming the show?
LT: I was, but it was interesting. It was this awkward thing where I was making music that was a little more grown than my audience was at the time. So instead, I did a lot of writing and producing for other artists. That ended up being a great decision because I learned a lot, especially from my mentor Babyface. He let me use his A-Room Studio in LA – I even brought Ariana Grande into the studio. I produced a few songs on her first album.
AC: You really built this. Did you ever expectMUTTto be this big?
LT: Honestly, no. It was such a great surprise to see people all over the world getting down to my music. It's a dream come true. I love seeing people celebrating live music.
AC: You've done television, theater, and music – would you ever walk the runway?
LT: Honestly, I'd pull up. Get those sample sizes they talk about. I'm gonna hit some sit-ups and come back to you on that. I'm with it. For real, there are so many amazing brands out there that I'd love to work with. I love going to shows and watching the runway, the creativity in action. I have a lot of friends over atSalehe Bembury.
AC: What's your favorite brand?
LT: Right now, I'm really connecting withAMIRI's new swag.
AC: Which of your songs would you walk the runway to?
LT: I think 'FEELINGS ON SILENT' would be such a beautiful piece to play while the runway is going down because it's orchestral and almost like a soundtrack. I also feel like 'MUTT' would be great, too. I could see the girls walking to 'MUTT.'
AC: 'MUTT' would be amazing. I could strut to 'MUTT.'

On today's Days of Our Lives recap: Hernandez House: Gabi is having a hard time with work when Javi approaches. She apologizes again for firing him and the way she treated him. She asks what it will take to get him to come back to work. She begs him to say yes but he says he's accepted a new job as a rookie firefighter/paramedic. Gabi asks about experience and Javi fills her in on his experience in Corpus Christie. She's thrilled for her cousins and vows to completely support him. The Spectator: Leo finds out Philip is denying Xander assaulted him. He hangs up just as Chad limps in. Leo rightfully assumes the skydiving is to blame. Chad explains the entire situation including Cat saying she's not going to bother him again. Chad asks about work-related things and Leo says EJ's case has gone cold. He does report Philip is awake, but Xander wasn't the one who beat him silly. Chad tells him to take off and get some rest and the two exit together. Sophia's House: Tate arrives to pick up Sophia who doesn't feel like celebrating. She says she is feeling ok but gets a good swift kick every five minutes. Tate grabs a feel and notes how real everything is getting. Sophia doesn't think she's going to be much fun, but Tate wants her to come along. She's also worried about how close she is to giving birth and how they don't have an adoptive family. Further, she thinks if Tate sees the baby, he won't want to give it up. Horton Square: Holly runs into Arianna Grace and says she's celebrating graduation. Arianna says she would hang but she's having dinner with her parents. They chat a bit about boys when young Douglas walks up and quickly exits. Arianna Grace tells Holly about the guy she hooked up with (sans name). Holly talks about Tate and how he got another girl pregnant. Arianna realizes she's talking about Tate and asks a bit more about the adoption. Arianna says she knows Tate really wants to get back together with her. Holly notes how something always happens when they try to get back together. Just then, Sophia and Tate walk up. Arianna is stunned to learn Sophia is 'Tate's baby mama.' Arianna Grace notes she and Sophia were best buds in kindergarten. Just then, Sophia needs to sit and says the baby has been kicking a lot. She didn't even want to come but Tate convinced her. With that, Tate and Holly head off to retrieve treats leaving Sophia and Arianna to catch up. Arianna Grace asks if Sophia has a thing for Tate. She provides a little history and says she's always kind of crushed on him. Arianna wonders why she's giving up the baby. Sophia says neither of them are ready to become parents and doesn't want Tate with her out of a sense of duty. She thinks they may be able to revisit the situation after the baby is born and adopted. Holly and Tate return with treats when Aaron arrives. Tate immediately embraces his bestie, and he says he's back for graduation. Just then, Holly realizes she needs to call her mother and dashes. Aaron spies Sophia and they discuss the pregnancy. He asks when it's due and Tate says soon. Aaron asks about Holly and Tate thinks they may have a chance after the baby is born and adopted. Greene Central: Cat is cleaning and dancing when Aaron arrives home. She wonders why he's home and Aaron reminds her about graduation. He says he's decided to walk, and their mother insisted he come. With that, he says he's going to meet his friends for a celebration. Brady Pub – Outside: Leo asks Chad if he's ever considered running DiMera as he's the only sane one in the family. Just then, Will walks out of the pub and embraces Chad. An awkward exchange ensues between Will and Leo regarding his collegial relationship with Chadwick. With that, Chad exits leaving Will and Leo to bathe in weirdness. Leo admits to having done many shady things to Will and Sonny. He says he's done a lot of self-reflection and deeply regrets his actions. Will says he saw Leo at the funeral and read the obituary he wrote. He wonders how Leo's life would be different if he'd had the privilege of growing up with John in his life. Javi arrives and Leo introduces him to Will as his boyfriend and Arianna Grace's cousin. Will says they met a while back and says he's late for dinner with Gabi and his daughter. He shakes hands with Leo and tells him to take care. Javi asks Leo about the funeral. Leo notes a bit of his history with John and Javi says it sounds like John was really good to him. He says he has news to cheer him up and says he got the job. Leo is thrilled for his beloved and wants to celebrate. Javi suggests they had back to the house where they can be alone. Brady Pub: Young Douglas goes through the pub mail and finds something addressed to him. He opens the letter and sees pictures of himself and several more of Arianna Grace and Holly. The note inside says it would be a shame if something happened to those pretty faces. Greene Central: Chad arrives, and Cat wonders why. He says he's there to apologize with what happened with Jennifer Rose. Cat thinks her response is totally justified but he disagrees. Chad says he doesn't begrudge Jack and JRo their opinion but they're not going to dictate with whom he socializes. Chad says Abigail is gone and he has to move forward with his life. Cat understands and says she is trying to find a way to move forward after the accident which killed her father and the one which put her in the hospital for two years. Chad suggests they try to move forward together. The Bistro: Gabi arrives and is all by her lonesome. She texts Arianna Grace when Will walks in and they embrace. They take a seat and discuss their daughter's sudden return to Salem. Just then, Arianna arrives and takes a seat. Gabi brings up Arianna Grace sneaking out which annoys her to no end. Will pipes up saying he's not thrilled to learn this information and notes she has broken curfew a few times with him and Sonny. Arianna can't believe they are spending time discussing such trivialities as she is an adult. Her parents both note she isn't paying her own bills nor living in her own place. Hernandez House: Leo and Javi arrive home and are all over each other. Just then, young Douglas arrives with the envelope in tow. Javi decides to leave them alone as he needs to 'go get ready' (Hmmm…). Left alone, Doug shows Leo the contents of the envelope and asks if he could get a loan to get these goons to back down. Leo agrees to give him as much as he can spare. Horton Square: Aaron sits with Sophia and have an adorkably awkward conversation. He notes how before he moved away, he thought they might end up together. Holly tells Tate that her mother said she would be there or graduation (really?). She's also looking at colleges in Europe. Holly wonders if Tate has considered where he will go to school. Tate admits he got into Salem U as after rehab he never got his grades back on track. Holly realizes she is the reason his life was so side-tracked. Endings Young Douglas thanks Leo for helping him with money and support. Leo says he also has a lead on the Horton necklace, but he probably won't be able to afford to buy it back. Leo asks how Doug got into this mess to begin with. Doug says he was delivering merchandise for this man so they could sell it on the down low. One night, he stopped at a bar and met a woman. The next morning his car had been vandalized, and all the merchandise was gone. The men he's dealing with now are even worse. Doug thanks him for his help and support and exits. Just then, Javi comes back in the room saying the room is ready for their celebration. Arianna Grace exits to the restroom and calls young Douglas, and he ignores it. Cat decides she should make Chad dinner, and he agrees to hang out. Sophia is surprised to learn Aaron thought they would end up together. He understands so many things have changed since then which leads Sophia to look over at Holly and Tate. Holly says how badly she feels about Tate taking the blame for her choices. Tate says he always wants to protect and support her. Holly used to believe that was true and then says he should get back to Sophia. She hugs him close before sending him on his way. Daily Horoscope for June 21, 2025

General Daily Insight for June 21, 2025 We can push our way forward without breaking our backs today. The Moon is in reliable Taurus, where it will first trine Mars in Virgo, inspiring us to act, before going on to square Pluto in Aquarius, stirring up our desire for change. Mars will then go on to make a rare, beautiful sextile to enthusiastic Jupiter in Cancer at 11:49 pm EDT, offering almost everyone a burst of energy late in the day. This probably won't be a quiet evening. Aries March 21 – April 19 You can make your home into anything you want it to be, Aries. Your sign's traditional ruling planet, fierce Mars, is in your efficient 6th house, where it sextiles lucky Jupiter in your domestic 4th house. Don't let them egg you on too much — be wary of knocking down any walls unless you're sure they aren't load-bearing! Still, this energy encourages big changes, so don't be shocked if you feel the urge to completely renovate your space. Practically anything feels possible right now. Taurus April 20 – May 20 There has rarely been a better day to hit the town. Passionate Mars in your 5th House of Fun is embracing bountiful Jupiter in your 3rd House of Local Community. Jump out of bed and head straight into town, because you're practically bound to encounter some exciting opportunities if you do! This could be great for romantic encounters, but you can also have a terrific time with friends. Ultimately, just avoid being anti-social when there is so much for you to go and explore. Gemini May 21 – June 20 Get grounded in your ambitions. A special sextile between Mars in your foundational 4th house and Jupiter in your money-loving 2nd house is encouraging you to work as hard as you can to earn tangible results. Energetic Mars will provide you with all the energy required to make it happen, while Jupiter simultaneously offers you the opportunity to succeed. Don't sit back and let this slip through your fingers! You can achieve quite a bit if you put in the work and believe in yourself. Cancer June 21 – July 22 There is no holding you back! A lovely sextile between energetic Mars in your communication sector and fortuitous Jupiter in your loyal sign is encouraging you to speak up and take action in the name of whatever it is you want. Your energy will be at an all-time high, so try to find a productive outlet for yourself — or else you might wind up going in circles. Pick a path forward, then get going. You can take yourself practically wherever you like. Leo July 23 – August 22 Think outside the box — and work outside it, too. The planets are encouraging you to open your mind up as Mars in your grounded 2nd house uplifts Jupiter in your mysterious 12th house. You can reach distant places by taking unusual routes. Surprising windows of opportunity are everywhere, and their unusual nature won't hold you back from building them into very real and very positive results. This is the perfect time to develop a million-dollar idea (or even a billion-dollar idea). Virgo August 23 – September 22 The stars are putting you in charge. Mars in your meticulous sign is pushing you to work harder and express yourself more authentically than ever before. As the red planet is currently emboldening enthusiastic Jupiter in your communal 11th house, people near and far are more inclined to let you call the shots. You may not usually consider yourself the leader type, but you have more ability than you may even know! There's no need to limit yourself during this exciting time. Libra September 23 – October 22 There is no need to rush anything, Libra. Thanks to today's stunning sextile between Mars in your dreamy 12th house and Jupiter in your professional 10th house, you can get places easily and reach new heights without needing to wear yourself out in your attempts to make it happen. Think of today like a roller coaster — you may not have a lot of control over where you're going, but it is going to be a fun ride, nonetheless. Buckle up and have fun! Scorpio October 23 – November 21 Working together is key to your success. Mars in your 11th House of Global Communities is invigorating Jupiter in your 9th House of Expansion, so the best way forward is going to include having quite a few people by your side. Opportunities may arrive from far away, but you should have a much easier time making use of them when you allow others to play their part and contribute to your hopes and dreams. What you're about to accomplish could change your life. Sagittarius November 22 – December 21 The work you do presently can have massive results. The skies are hosting a potent sextile between action planet Mars in your 10th House of Career and bountiful Jupiter in your 8th House of Shared Resources. You are likely in no mood to waste your time with busywork or inconsequential tasks! A fresh opportunity on the professional front could yield a nice windfall, or perhaps you'll finally receive your just rewards for a project you've been hammering away at. You've definitely earned this. Capricorn December 22 – January 19 Someone has something special to offer you! Your expansion sector is all lit up, thanks to warrior Mars currently marching through that territory, boosting you to fly far and wide. Plus, you probably won't want to fly alone when Mars hypes up Jupiter in your relationship sector. Someone could show you the world in a way you've never imagined — no magic carpet required. You're all but guaranteed to love the experience, as well as the destination, so hop on without delay. Aquarius January 20 – February 18 You have all the drive you need to move mountains. A spectacular sextile between Mars in your all-or-nothing 8th house and Jupiter in your can-do 6th house is pushing you to be your most productive self. Jupiter will do its level best to ensure the process is not too difficult — it might even be fun! Mars, in turn, points you toward tangible rewards for your efforts. Burning the midnight oil at present could result in some pretty stupendous fireworks, so don't hold back. Pisces February 19 – March 20 This could be one of the loveliest moments of the year for you. A harmonious alignment between Mars in your partnership sector and Jupiter in your passion sector is setting you up for a day of fun and frolicking, specifically with someone special by your side. Whether they are a lover, a business partner, or a very close friend, consider allowing someone you trust to call the shots for the time being. This person should set up something unbelievably amazing!

Can Labubu Endure Collectible Hype?

The latest drop from Pop Mart's the Monsters collection might be its most ambitious yet: putting the blind-box darling Labubu into a funky foodie product line that might turn off existing fans. With the Monsters: Wacky Mart, Kasing Lung's original intention with the mischievous creature shines in a way that might appeal more to vinyl art collectors. Here they give Gremlins energy as they get into munchy mayhem in milk cartons or tempura shrimp. It's a distinct move that leans into Labubus being more than just the keychain trend they're now known for, but will fad chasers follow behind? Labubu has been carving its niche in a very interesting way since going viral all over the world. You'd think the plush keychain fashion craze would have a rapidly expiring shelf life, but it's seemingly as strong as ever. Cher was seen rocking one at a recent film festival appearance, and a designer special edition inspired by zeitgeist tastemaker Pharrell Williams just set a record—$31,250, according to Hype Beast—for the highest-selling Labubu plush at auction. View this post on InstagramMany hold the opinion that they're destined for the same fate as the Beanie Babies: that the scarcity arms race and money making releases will eventually burn out. However, there are a few elements at play that might prove their longevity. It brings me no pleasure to bring up Minions, those ugly yellow big-eyed, overalls-wearing slaves to evil that just won't die. Their gibberish haunts me when I visit Universal Studios theme parks and I bless the days my child goes without discovering them. I'm well aware they're numbered. When they were introduced in the Despicable Me franchise from Universal and Illumination in 2010, their toys and merch sold like crazy for years. They outshone the film's main characters as initially they were just side characters who you'd think would have just faded away as one of the most cursed things to happen to animation. No, we're five movies and two theme park rides deep now, with a new one on the way with the Minions at the center. We have lived through collectibles and streetwear merch collabs for kids, adults, and pets. Hell, Pop Mart even has their own Minions line. They're not going anywhere. But Labubu doesn't come from a movie, right? In the ever-evolving landscape of pop culture phenomena, the Labubu has shared a similar trajectory as the Minions. Labubu and the other Monsters bring out that same cuteness aggression—though I disagree about the Minions being cute—and Lung's lore around Labubu is ripe for expanded storytelling. It could very well spin off into any sort of entertainment medium for fantasy animation fans (like us here). And honestly they deserve it more than the 'banana-this-and-banana-that' gaggle of goggle-wearing idiots. Another example is Trolls. Those neon-haired, alien-looking, gem-belly-buttoned dolls were the blueprint before Beanie Babies of popular collector madness that transcended their niche. And they eventually became a hit movie franchise for Universal as well, though their toys never reached the same height of fandom as they did at the end of the last century. In theory, Labubu could see the same opportunities. The plush keychain fad has hit its global fever pitch. At this point we'll be seeing if it can endure. Finding a Labubu is just as hard as ever. I finally got my hands on a new one for my collection thanks to my husband using his San Diego Comic-Con Hall H overnight line skillset to make the opening of a local Pop Mart in our area. But in other places such as Japan, the fad is not anything new, especially in one of the world's biggest Gachapon capitals. Pop Mart is set to open more locations there soon to see if it catches on. As of now, peak Labubu popularity remains in the larger markets of China, the U.S., and the UK. Even if you visit the Pop Mart theme park Popland in China, you'll be hard-pressed to find any product but can at least enjoy the live entertainment featuring Labubu and the rest of the characters in the Monsters universe. We don't have any opportunity to meet any Labubus stateside yet (though a Lafufu knock-off did make an iconic appearance at LA's 'No Kings' protest), but the keychains have hit their 'cringe tacky promotional stunt' era, as seen in a recent social media post showing the cast of F1 unboxing Labubu blind boxes. In the U.K., Labubus are back on sale after a pause due to brawls breaking out in lines between collectors and flippers. Yet challenges remain because of that aspect; market dynamics are shifting because flippers hoard so much product at exorbitant prices. The new rules for the U.K. sales involve getting one through a random lottery, which is as not-fun as it sounds. So either Pop Mart makes more product, undermining the very scarcity game that makes it a luxury accessory, or finds better solutions. With the new Wacky Mart release, is the brand hitting oversaturation with a collection that might not appeal to the masses mad at the plushes dripping out at a slow pace through its retailers? Maybe. In the long run it might not matter to the franchise, which can easily find ways to extend its virality into a core fandom through other mediums. It's a future that fantasy creature fans can hope for, especially if they've felt left out of having a new character to embrace. For myself, Labubu came along when I was looking for something to be into while I began my journey as a parent and that's a core experience that makes the character feel timeless to me. Whether its a fleeting fashion moment or a promising start to a new universe in Pop Culture, Kasing Lung's elf creatures might just mischief their way to being more. Want more io9 news?
