PSM To Work On Incentives For National Sepak Takraw Squad After Asian Cup Success
KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) will work towards providing incentives for the national sepak takraw squad following their positive achievements at the 2025 Asian Cup Championship held recently at Stadium Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur.
Its president, Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, said the amount had not yet been decided, but it would be a token of appreciation for the fighting spirit and sacrifices shown by all the players involved.
Malaysia clinched two championship titles in the quadrant and regu events, and finished runners-up in the doubles and team regu events in the inaugural edition of the championship.

'PSM will try to give what it can afford, that is my promise to the players. I will also submit an official application to the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) and the National Sports Council (MSN) to see if incentives can be provided, especially for the gold medallists – and even if those who won silver medals can be rewarded, that would be a blessing.
'I hope KBS and MSN will give due consideration. As for PSM, we can't announce anything concrete yet as we don't have much funding,' he said at a press conference today during the launch of the 11th season of the Sepak Takraw League (STL).
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who officiated the launch of the new STL season, said the Sepaktakraw Asian Cup Championship generally did not fall under the events eligible for the Sports Victory Prize Scheme (SHAKAM), but she was open to considering it.
The STL 2025 season will feature a format change aimed at increasing excitement in the league, which was dominated by Kuala Lumpur Thunder last season.
The new format includes an increase in the number of Grand Prix (GP) events to six, with Negeri Sembilan added as a new host venue.

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is determined to boost grassroots development by opening up more sports to the public, including the disabled. Using swimming as an example, Yeoh said limited access to sports facilities has been an issue which has been holding back talent development at the grassroots. "When it comes to talent development we have to understand the constraints and problems we are facing," said Yeoh yesterday (June 21). "How come Malaysia does not have many swimmers when in fact, Malaysia has plenty of water resources? "We found out that access to swimming pools has become limited as facility owners no longer want to build pools because it costs a lot to maintain. "When there are fewer pools, only the rich can learn to swim. We then only get talent from the T20 group and (subsequently) the remaining 80 per cent of the population does not know how to swim. "So we have to find a way to open up access to the other 80 per cent, which includes both able and para swimmers. Only then will we get new talent. "In our pilot project for swimming classes, we have received sponsorship from Decathlon, Allianz as well as Pos Malaysia, this way we can reduce costs. "My hope is that one day, every student in school knows how to swim." The Youth and Sports Ministry launched the KLAS Swimming programme in 2023 which teaches children from B40 families between the ages of 6 to 12 the fundamentals of swimming. Yeoh added that development in para sports has been held back as many are reluctant to register as persons with disabilities (OKU) which signals a lack of awareness regarding the para sports programmes available. "Roughly 15 per cent of the population has disabilities, however, based on registered numbers only 2.2 per cent of the population has an OKU card," said Yeoh. "This is far too low which makes it difficult for us to find new para talent. Perhaps there is a stigma or a feeling that it is not necessary to register. "We realise that we cannot depend on the Youth and Sports Department alone to scout for new para talent and from now on, the National Sports Council (NSC) will also be involved (in talent identification). "We have to expand our talent pool. We cannot depend on Bonnie Bunyau Gustin and Ziyad Zolkefli forever." Bonnie (powerlifting) and Ziyad (shot put) are two out of five Paralympic gold medallists Malaysia has produced. The other three are Ridzuan Puzi (100m sprint), Latif Romly (long jump) and Cheah Liek Hou (badminton).

MUGELLO, Italy: Marc Marquez took pole position for the Italian MotoGP on Saturday as the championship leader attempts to continue his domination of this season at Mugello. Six-time elite world champion Marc Marquez took his sixth pole of the year with a time of one minute and 44.169 seconds, 0.059sec ahead of rival and Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia. No more mall training: Road to Gold panel to secure private venues for pro shuttlers, says Hannah Yeoh
PUTRAJAYA, June 21 — The Road to Gold (RTG) Committee will help professional badminton players under its programme find more conducive training venues, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. She said the RTG Committee is aware that these players are currently training in halls which are also open to the public. 'I hope we can help find more suitable and private training locations for professional athletes (badminton players). 'As it stands, they've been training in places like shopping malls where the public can watch them. I believe RTG Programme coordinator Datuk Stuart Ramalingam will coordinate the necessary support,' she said. She told reporters this after opening the Asean Persons With Disabilities in Sports Conference 2025 here today. Hannah, who also chairs the RTG Committee, said efforts will also be made to help professional players find quality sparring partners to boost their performance. Last Thursday, she announced that four professional badminton players — men's world number one pair Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai Jemie — had committed to the RTG programme for the 2025 cycle. The RTG project, introduced by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) in April 2023, is a national initiative to coordinate Malaysia's efforts to win its first Olympic gold medal, with focus on the Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 Games. Meanwhile, Hannah expressed hope that the contract issue involving national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, whose deal with the Badminton Association of Malaysia ended last December, can be resolved promptly. She stressed the importance of settling the matter quickly, as any delay could affect the performance of the world number three pair.
