
Mars may once have had an ocean with sandy beaches, radar data suggests
Mars may once have been home to sandy beaches, new ground-penetrating radar data suggests.
The radar data from China's Zhurong rover has revealed buried beneath the Martian surface evidence of what look like sandy beaches from the shoreline of a large ocean that may have existed long ago on the planet's northern plains.
The findings are the latest evidence indicating the existence of this hypothesised ocean, called Deuteronilus, roughly 3.5 to 4bn years ago, a time when Mars – now cold and desolate – had a thicker atmosphere and warmer climate. Scientists say an ocean of liquid water on the Martian surface could have harboured living organisms, much like the primordial seas of early Earth.
The rover, which operated from May 2021 to May 2022, travelled 1.2 miles (1.9 km) in an area that exhibits surface features suggestive of an ancient shoreline. Its ground-penetrating radar, which transmitted high-frequency radio waves into the ground that reflected off subsurface features, probed up to 80 metres beneath the surface.
Between 10 and 35 metres underground, the radar images detected thick layers of material with properties similar to sand, all sloped in the same direction and at an angle similar to that of beaches on Earth just below the water where the sea meets the land. The researchers mapped these structures spanning three-quarters of a mile along the rover's path.
'The Martian surface has changed dramatically over 3.5bn years, but by using ground-penetrating radar we found direct evidence of coastal deposits that weren't visible from the surface,' said Hai Liu, a Guangzhou University planetary scientist and a member of the science team for China's Tianwen-1 mission that included the rover.
On Earth, beach deposits of this size would have needed millions of years to form, the researchers said, suggesting that on Mars there was a large and long-lived body of water with wave action that distributed sediments carried into it by rivers flowing from nearby highlands.
'The beaches would have been formed by similar processes to those on Earth – waves and tides,' said Liu, one of the leaders of the study published on Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 'Such oceans would have profoundly influenced Mars' climate, shaped its landscape and created environments potentially suitable for life to emerge and thrive.'
'Shorelines are great locations to look for evidence of past life,' said Michael Manga, a planetary scientist and study co-author from the University of California, Berkeley. 'It's thought that the earliest life on Earth began at locations like this, near the interface of air and shallow water.'
The rover explored the southern part of Utopia Planitia, a large plain in the Martian northern hemisphere.
The researchers ruled out other possible explanations for the structures Zhurong detected.
'A primary part of this work was testing these other hypotheses. Wind-blown dunes were considered, but there were a few issues. First, dunes tend to come in groups, and these groups produce characteristic patterns not present in these deposits,' said Benjamin Cardenas, a Penn State geoscientist and study co-author. 'We also considered ancient rivers, which exist in some nearby locations on Mars, but we rejected that hypothesis for similar reasons based on the patterns we saw in the deposits. And you don't typically get structures like this in lava flows, either. Beaches simply fit the observations the best.'
Earth, Mars and the solar system's other planets were formed roughly 4.5bn years ago. That means Deuteronilus would have disappeared approximately 1bn years into Martian history, when the planet's climate changed dramatically. Scientists said some of the water may have been lost to space while large amounts may remain trapped underground.
A study published last year based on seismic data obtained by Nasa's robotic InSight lander found that an immense reservoir of liquid water may reside deep under the Martian surface within fractured igneous rocks.
For decades, scientists have used satellite images to trace Martian surface features resembling a shoreline. But any such evidence on the surface could have been erased or distorted by billions of years of wind erosion or other geological processes.
That is not the case with the newly found structures, which were entombed over time under material deposited by dust storms, meteorite strikes or volcanism.
'These are beautifully preserved because they are still buried in the Martian subsurface,' Cardenas said.

Marijuana users are up to twice as likely to have a stroke, heart attack, or die from heart disease, research has revealed. University of California scientists found there was a 29 per cent higher risk of conditions like heart attack, a 20 per cent higher risk for stroke and double the risk of dying from heart disease among cannabis users. The study, published in Heart, reviewed 24 studies involving 200 million people to investigate the relationship between the drug and the diseases. The researchers warned that the study 'raises serious questions about the assumption that cannabis imposes little cardiovascular risk'. The reviewed studies, which ranged from 2016 to 2023, included people aged between 19 and 59 years old. The research did not specify if the marijuana exposure was from smoking the drug or other forms of consumption. In 2023, the American College of Cardiology revealed that people who smoke marijuana or eat weed-laced edibles daily are a third more likely to develop coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD is the most common form of heart disease – cholesterol narrows the arteries supplying blood to the organ, causing chest pain, shortness of breath and fatigue. The significant link remained regardless of whether users smoked tobacco, drank alcohol, had major cardiovascular risk factors, and no matter their age or sex. Whether users took cannabis by smoking the drug, eating edibles, or other methods also made no difference. The American College of Cardiology researchers said people should let their doctors know if they use the drug, so clinicians can start monitoring heart health. Dr Ishan Paranjpe, resident physician at Stanford University and the study's lead author, said: 'We found that cannabis use is linked to CAD, and there seems to be a dose-response relationship in that more frequent cannabis use is associated with a higher risk of CAD. 'In terms of the public health message, it shows that there are probably certain harms of cannabis use that weren't recognised before, and people should take that into account. 'From a scientific standpoint, these findings are exciting because they suggest there might be new drug targets and mechanisms we can explore to take control of this pathway going forward.'

Experts warn of hidden health risks of alcohol-free beverages
Many people who don't want to spend Sunday with a hangover choose alcohol-free beverages as they believe them to be the healthier choice. Many of us like to frequent a beer garden when the sun is in the sky and have a good old catch up with friends and family we haven't seen in a while. While some of us might choose to have a cheeky cocktail or pint in the warm weather, others choose to go with an alcohol-free alternative. While these drinks won't cause you to have a hangover the next day, many people choose to buy the beverage as they believe it to be the healthier choice. However, this may not be entirely true, especially if they are consumed without moderation. While sales of the booze-free alternatives are soaring, health experts are worried that many people are unaware of the harm these drinks can cause to our health. New research has uncovered that regularly drinking alcohol-free beer, especially those that are wheat-based or the 'mixed' varieties that are flavoured with fruit soda, could actually cause a significant increase to the risk of developing heart problems and type 2 diabetes, reports the Mirror. UK pubs in 2023 alone sold 120million pints of booze-free beer, which was a 14 per cent hike from the year before. In comparison to sales in 2019, this is a staggering 77.8 per cent increase. Scientists are wary of the alcohol-free beverages as, if drunk regularly, the sugar and calorie content can be damaging to your health. In a recent study, 44 healthy men were asked to consume either two bottles or water or alcohol-free beer each day for four weeks. Each of the men received blood tests throughout the trial to track any changes in their metabolic health. The results showed that those who drank the booze-free beer showed an increase in the levels of insulin in their blood, which can be linked to type 2 diabetes. Blood sugar levels were also seen to rise, as well as levels of triglycerides, which is a type of fat associated with cardiovascular disease. According to the group of international researchers - from the University of California, San Diego, Germany's Knappschaft Kliniken and the University of the Basque Country - the negative effects were seen to be largely driven by excess sugar and calories in some alcohol-beer beers. Reported in the Nutrients journal, the team said: "Non-alcoholic beers are gaining popularity as alternatives to alcoholic beverages, yet their metabolic and health effects compared to no consumption of these drinks remain unclear." The problem seems to come from the way that alcohol-free drinks are made. As removing the alcohol can take away the flavour, brewers will often add sugar and flavourings to improve the taste. However, in some cases these can contain more sugar than their boozy alternative. Having a busy social life in your 50s could actually be an early sign of Alzheimer's, scientists warn
FOR years, scientists and doctors alike have been telling us staying social keeps Alzheimer's at bay. But a surprising new US study suggests the opposite might be true, at least in the early stages. 1 'Their social lives may even expand,' said co-senior author, Dr Ashwin Kotwal from the University of California, said. "We don't know for sure if they are engaging more with others, or if those around them are noticing subtle changes and giving them more support.' The study, published this month in the American Journal of Epidemiology, analysed data from almost 500,000 Brits aged 40 and over, collected by the UK Biobank. It was an observational study, meaning researchers didn't track outcomes over time, but looked for associations in the data. Researchers calculated each person's genetic risk for Alzheimer's and compared it with their levels of social connectedness. These scores, known as Alzheimer's Disease Genetic Risk Scores (AD-GRS), reflect a person's inherited likelihood of developing the condition, based on known genes. But they don't guarantee someone will get the disease. They then looked at how often people felt lonely or isolated, how satisfied they were with their relationships, and how many different social activities they took part in. Previous studies have linked lower levels of social interaction with reduced brain volume and a higher risk of dementia. But in this new analysis, those with a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer's were three per cent less likely to feel socially isolated. They also reported one per cent higher satisfaction with their family relationships and took part in around two per cent more types of social activity compared to people with a lower genetic risk. In the UK, around 982,000 people are currently living with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. That figure is expected to hit 1.4 million by 2040. There is no cure, so spotting the condition early is crucial. An early diagnosis can help slow progression, ease symptoms, and open up access to clinical trials. According to the Alzheimer's Association, one of the first warning signs is social withdrawal. Other symptoms include asking the same questions repeatedly, losing track of important dates, and increasingly relying on memory aids or loved ones for tasks once managed alone.
