New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is generally known for publicly acknowledging and celebrating Indian successes in various fields on international platforms. However, there are a few notable exceptions where his silence has been conspicuous.
One such instance was when Banu Mushtaq recently won the International Booker Prize in 2025 for her Kannada short story collection Hridaya Deepa (Heart Lamp). There are at least two other instances when Modi failed to acknowledge Indian successes in global recognition events.
In all three cases, the absence of a congratulatory message from PM Modi was in sharp contrast with his usual practice of publicly celebrating Indian achievements in sports, science, and other fields.
The silence is perhaps selective, possibly influenced by the recipients' perceived political or ideological positions, or the themes of their work, which often include critique of religious majoritarianism and divisiveness, and advocacy for pluralism in India.
Ravish Kumar – Ramon Magsaysay Award (2019)
Ravish Kumar, a senior Hindi language journalist, was awarded the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2019, often called the Asian Nobel Prize. Despite widespread congratulations from across the Indian political spectrum, PM Modi did not issue any public congratulatory message to Ravish Kumar for this achievement.
Geetanjali Shree – International Booker Prize (2022)
Geetanjali Shree became the first Indian author to win the International Booker Prize for her Hindi novel Tomb of Sand (Ret Samadhi) in 2022. The union government and the ruling party, including Prime Minister Modi, were notably silent on this achievement, despite the book's significance as the first South Asian language work to win the prize. The lack of acknowledgment was widely noted, especially given the Modi government's general emphasis on promoting Hindi and celebrating international recognition for Indian achievements. Her book, in Hindustani is a bold exploration of pluralism, the meaninglessness of borders and features a strong relationship between a Muslim Pakistani man and a Hindu Indian woman.
Banu Mushtaq – International Booker Prize (2025)
Banu Mushtaq won the International Booker Prize in 2025 for her Kannada short story collection Hridaya Deepa (Heart Lamp). While there was an outpouring of congratulatory greetings from opposition leaders, there is no record of Modi issuing a congratulatory message for this achievement. This omission is particularly notable given the historic nature of the award for Kannada literature and Indian writing. Her book is about gender and attacks patriarchy which foregrounds her own identity as a Muslim, woman, speaker of Kannada, Urdu, Dakhni and Hindi.

Pakistan nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize, cites ‘pivotal' role during conflict with India
Pakistan announced on Saturday that it has nominated United States President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize 'in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership' during the recent conflict with India. 'The Government of Pakistan also acknowledges and greatly admires President Trump's sincere offers to help resolve the longstanding dispute of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan – an issue that lies at the heart of regional instability,' Islamabad stated in a social media post. It also described Trump as a 'genuine peacemaker'. The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is expected to be announced in October 2026. 'I should have gotten it four or five times,' the US president was quoted as saying by AP. 'They won't give me a Nobel Peace Prize because they only give it to liberals.' In a social media post on Saturday, Trump reiterated that he would never receive a Nobel Peace Prize, 'no matter what I do'. He also repeated his claim that he had helped 'stop the war' between India and Pakistan. New Delhi has rejected Trump's assertions. On Wednesday, New Delhi stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told the US president that India will never accept mediation to resolve tensions with Pakistan. Trump was also told that New Delhi had agreed to the ceasefire only on Islamabad's request, said India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Hours after the statement, Trump hosted Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House. Speaking afterwards, Trump thanked both Munir and Modi for their roles in 'ending the war', and noted ongoing trade discussions with both countries, The Hindu reported. The tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and eight defence personnel were killed. On May 10, India and Pakistan reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following a four-day conflict. New Delhi's announcement on the decision to stop military action had come minutes after Trump claimed on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to the ceasefire. However, India has said that the decision to stop firing was taken bilaterally and that there was no intervention by the US. The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The five-member panel is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. According to the Nobel Prize website, a nomination for the Peace Prize is valid if submitted by qualified individuals such as government officials, judges, professors, former laureates or members of recognised peace organisations. This includes 'members of national Assemblies and national governments of sovereign states as well as current heads of state'. Self-nominations are not accepted.

Ensure treatment of ailing jailed separatist leader Shabir Shah, allow family to meet him: Mirwaiz, Mehbooba to Centre
Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday (June 20, 2025) urged the Central Government 'to ensure the treatment of incarcerated separatist Shabir Shah'. 'Reports of Shabir Shah Sahab's serious health condition in Tihar Jail, and denial of access to his family members to talk to him on phone for the past two years, or care for him when he is facing such a medical emergency and is in dire need of a surgery, is very unfortunate and disturbing,' the Mirwaiz, who led the Friday prayers at the Jama Masjid, said. He said Mr. Shah's wife had filed a bail plea 'on his grave medical condition', but was rejected. 'The prolonged imprisonment, devoid of due legal process, has made the process their punishment. It is against the very idea that the Indian legal system claims to uphold — the basic human rights of the prisoners, violating the very idea of human dignity, due process and justice,' the Mirwaiz said. He appealed to the Government of India and the authorities 'to immediately intervene to ensure that due medical care is extended to Shah Sahab, and his family is allowed access to be with him when he needs them the most'. 'I also appeal to the elected government of J&K to raise this serious issue and provide every assistance that they can in this matter,' the Mirwaiz said. Ms. Mufti also expressed concern over Mr. Shah's health conditions. 'Shabir Shah incarcerated in Tihar Jail for a considerable period is reportedly suffering from prostate cancer & is in urgent need of surgery. Deeply unfortunate that the Courts have barred his family from being present during his treatment. Appeal the Home Secretary Govind Mohan ji to kindly intervene on humanitarian grounds & ensure that due compassion care is extended in this critical time and that his family is allowed to be by his side at this difficult hour,' Ms. Mufti said. Mr. Shah headed the separatist organisation, Democratic Freedom Party, which was banned by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2023. Mr. Shah was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2017 in an alleged terror financing case. In the past, Mr. Shah was among key separatist figures who engaged in the backchannel dialogue with the Centre. The Delhi High Court on June 12 refused a bail plea of Mr. Shah, saying he was 'involved in a number of criminal cases, all of which relate to the conspiring for the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India.'
