Springboks unfazed by rain forecast for Barbarians game

This Saturday's match in Cape Town marks the first encounter between the Springboks and Barbarians since 2016, and it's the first time ever the teams will cross paths on South African soil.
Unfortunately, a strong cold front is expected to hit Cape Town from Wednesday, bringing plenty of rain with it this week.
Heavy cloud cover and some persistent rainfall is also forecast for most of Saturday, and so perhaps the expectation for free-flowing attacking rugby will need to be watered down to some degree.
With that weather forecast in mind for Saturday, Springbok attack coach Tony Brown said although it could influence the match, he was comfortable that the Springboks would be able to cope.
'It's obviously tougher playing attacking rugby in the rain, but we are an adaptable team,' said Brown. 'It might be tougher for the Barbarians given their style of play, but we feel we know what is expected of our players.'
Zoning in on what they expected from the Barbarians, Brown said: 'They are renowned for their attacking rugby, and they are very unpredictable, so we have to be prepared for that and prepare as well as possible for the match.'
The Springboks are expected to select a strong backline, which will also include X-factor superstar Cheslin Kolbe.
'I haven't played against them, but from what I've seen, they are a good team with a lot of experienced players, so it will be important for us to stay calm and prepare as well as we can,' said Kolbe.
'It's great to be back. We haven't seen each other in six or seven months, so it was exciting to assemble as a group again. And then being in Cape Town is a home away from home for me, so it's always great playing in the Mother City.'
The Springboks will continue their preparations on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will have Thursday off to rest and recuperate, before wrapping up their on-field preparations for the match on Friday with their captains' run.
The match kicks off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

Springboks to stick to their guns against unpredictable Barbarians

It might not be an official Test match, but the Springboks aren't planning on holding anything back when they meet the Barbarians in a historic match in Cape Town on Saturday, 28 June. The world champions will host the famous invitational side on South African soil for the first time on Saturday. Preparing to go up against a team like the Barbarians can be tricky given their unpredictable nature. But the Springboks are gearing up to stick to their own game. 'We see it as a Test match and we will play the game that way,' Bok assistant coach Tony Brown said during a press conference on Monday. 'The Barbarians are a famous side worldwide. Everyone knows how they play. Everyone knows what they try to do and the style they try to uphold as a Barbarians team. We're aware of what's coming – it is unpredictable rugby. 'You can't really prepare for it. But, if your awareness is high around what they're trying to do, then we can prepare as well as we can.' Brown has been instrumental in the Boks' continued growth since joining the back-to-back World Cup winners ahead of the 2024 season. With him on board, the South Africans' traditional set-piece strength and physicality have been perfectly complimented by their attacking evolution. During the 2024 season, the Springboks enjoyed increased numbers in various attacking categories, including tries and points scored, meters gained, and carries-and passes made. With this in mind, responding to Robbie Deans' Barbarians – and serving challenges of their own – shouldn't be too difficult for the Boks. 'It's definitely a different challenge to what we normally would have,' Brown added. 'They've always knocked over plenty of great sides over the years. 'The challenge is massive. That is exactly what we want for what we can call our first Test of the year.' History (slightly) favours BaaBaas The match will be the precursor to a packed international season for the Boks. It will be the ninth meeting between the sides. South Africa have faced the Barbarians on eight occasions, claiming three victories to the Barbarians' four. Their last meeting nine years ago ended in a draw. 'It won't be Barbarians versus Barbarians; it will be Springboks versus Barbarians,' Brown explained. 'Everything we do will be about how we play the game, how we play Test match rugby, and how we are going to win the game. 'The first thing is we see it as a Test match, and we're going to play the game that way. 'So, the guys who have been given the opportunity to play against the BaaBaas need to perform as best they can. 'We need to get our coaching right, we need to get our plans right. We always win Test matches through putting the opposition under pressure, whether it's attack and defence. So that'll be our plan against the BaaBaas.' WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN THE HISTORIC MATCH? Orlando Pirates turn to Ouaddou after Rulani talks collapse why

Orlando Pirates stunned fans on Monday by unveiling Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou as their new head coach, despite recent talks with Rulani Mokwena. The club moved swiftly as their European pre-season tour looms, with their first fixture against Bolton Wanderers set for 11 July in Spain. A source revealed that Mokwena remained a serious candidate, but negotiations hit a stumbling block that ultimately shifted the Buccaneers' plans. While several reports believed a deal was nearing finalisation, Pirates opted for a different direction. A club stakeholder explained one of the major reasons behind the breakdown in talks. 'Rulani (Mokwena) wanted to bring in his own bench. That didn't work out. It is part of the reason for the change,' the source said. This demand reportedly clashed with the club's internal structure. Prompting a rethink as the club pressed on with their search for a coach who fits their broader criteria. Respect remains between Mokwena and Pirates Despite the failed negotiations, the relationship between Mokwena and the Pirates hierarchy remains respectful. 'There was interest in coach Mokwena from other clubs and it's believed that Pirates wanted to give him that chance. They found one [coach] who could suit their criteria,' the source noted. Mokwena recently attracted interest from Pyramids FC, Yanga SC, and Zamalek, but he ruled himself out of contention for the Egyptian giants. However, the unfolding events at Orlando Pirates may have broader implications on where he lands next. Ouaddou, who recently resigned from Marumo Gallants and was reportedly close to joining Chippa United. Now takes the reins at one of South Africa's most demanding clubs. His appointment marks a dramatic twist and has already triggered wide debate among fans and pundits. 'You know what was happening was a tricky situation. The club hierarchy made their decision and Rulani was not the one,' a source said. Will Ouaddou be a success at Orlando Pirates? Will Springboks don unpopular Pick n Pay kit for 2025 test series?

The Springboks test series is just days away from kicking off. But will the thrice-winning World Champions be wearing new jerseys, courtesy of sponsors Pick n Pay? In recent weeks, the yellow and green training kits have been a hard pass for many rugby fans. Like the aqua-jade 'Checkers Sixty60' alternative kit, which was introduced during the 2023 World Cup, supporters have voiced their disapproval of the design. In March, the Blitzboks debuted their new look, which featured the retailer's large logo on the back. On social media, many South Africans, including rugby experts, have given the Springboks 'Pick n Pay kit' a thumbs down. The national rugby team were seen wearing the yellow and green jerseys as part of their training kits following two alignment camps in Cape Town this year. Speaking to The South African, SA Rugby's Commercial General Manager Andy Colquhoun confirmed that Springboks replica jerseys and training kits would go on sale this week, ahead of the test series season. The jerseys would not feature the Pick n Pay logo, as was anticipated, as the signing of the new sponsor was too late to incorporate into production. Images of new jerseys – different from last year's – would be released on Tuesday, 24 June, and would go on sale the next day. Replica jerseys featuring Pick n Pay's logo will be released to the public in 2026. Earlier this year, SA Rugby announced that Pick n Pay had signed a four-year contract as a Tier 1 sponsor. The sponsor's logo is featured on all Springboks match-day jerseys and on the front of all training apparel. The retailer replaces MTN, which previously sponsored the Boks from 2017 up until last year. The brand's name will feature on the back of the jersey in gold above the position number and player name. According to reports, the significant move will cost the supermarket group around R70 million per year. In March, the Blitzboks sported the new kit for their game against Uruguay. The Springboks will play a friendly against the Barbarians at Cape Town's DHL Stadium on Saturday, 28 June. Home games include the following dates… Castle Lager Incoming Series 5 July: South Africa vs Italy, Loftus Versfeld (Pretoria) 12 July: South Africa vs Italy, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (Gqeberha) 19 July: South Africa vs Georgia, Mbombela Stadium (Nelspruit) Castle Lager Rugby Championship 16 August: South Africa vs Australia, Emirates Airline Park (Johannesburg) 23 August: South Africa vs Australia, DHL Stadium (Cape Town) 27 September: South Africa vs Argentina, Hollywoodbets Kings Park (Durban) The Springboks will also play these away games. 6 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Auckland (Eden Park) 13 September: South Africa vs New Zealand, Wellington (Sky Stadium) 4 October: South Africa vs Argentina, London (Twickenham) 8 November: South Africa vs France, Paris (Stade de France) 15 November: South Africa vs Italy, Turin (Allianz Stadium) 22 November: South Africa vs Ireland, Dublin (Aviva Stadium) 29 November: South Africa vs Wales, Cardiff (Principality Stadium) Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
