Zac Posen's GapStudio Collection 01 redefines Gap brand with bold tailoring and elegant denim

Independent03-04-2025

As his high-end GapStudio collection makes its debut, fashion designer Zac Posen reflects on his journey to revitalize the Gap brand and his vision for its future.
Appointed creative director at Gap Inc. in 2024, Posen has shaped the creative direction for Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic. By taking bold risks, he has elevated the heritage brand, starting with his groundbreaking designs at last year's Met Gala.
'I had this amazing opportunity with Oscar-winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph and the chance to bring in different artisans during the process,' Posen says. 'I think they saw a new facet of my creativity and what Gap could represent culturally.'
Randolph wore a striking all-denim gown inspired by Gap's 1969 denim, designed for the gala's 'Garden of Time' theme. The following day, the orders began flooding in, and an idea was born.
Posen's Collection 01 brings a fresh, modern twist to American style with expert tailoring, intricate details and a touch of elegance. Featuring elevated takes on Gap's signature fabrics, the collection includes a chic trench coat and stylish sailor pants — both in denim — and the now-famous poplin maxi shirtdress.
As a designer, Posen was known for his namesake label and glamorous, body-hugging gowns. The label was shut down in 2019.
Posen recently hosted The Associated Press at his Gap design studio in New York, where he discussed the collection, his passion for denim and the journey in reinventing his career.
Responses have been edited for clarity and brevity.
AP: What happened at Met Gala that inspired this collection?
POSEN: This amazing opportunity that came about with like 'do we do a Met Gala outfit,' right? 'Do we do a Met Gala outfit?' And we said, 'yes, let's do it.' And I had this amazing opportunity with Da'Vine Joy (Randolph) and the ability to kind of bring in different art artisans in the process. And I think they saw a different facet ... of my creativity and what Gap could mean culturally.
AP: And that set off a chain reaction?
POSEN: The Met Gala happened. And then the next day, my friend Erin Walsh, stylist, and Anne Hathaway called and said, we want you to make a cotton dress. And from that moment we produced the dress. Sold within hours, sold out online. And we kind of started to see this cultural conversation starting and this other facet that really naturally evolved. It wasn't in a strategy or a playbook. I never really thought I'd be rebuilding another sub-brand within such an iconic brand and have this opportunity to work in an artisanal manner in the early development of a collection that will be available to a much larger scale amount of people.'
AP: How did you end up working with Gap?
POSEN: I hadn't had my company since before COVID, since 2019, when my company closed. And it had been this interesting time period ... Obviously COVID happened. I had to figure out how to support myself, and I was doing one-of-a-kind pieces. I did some projects with Ryan Murphy on 'Feud: Capote Versus the Swans,' and little projects here and there, and I was looking at different opportunities, mostly around within luxury and with luxury brands that I'd been in conversations with for quite some time. And I had this amazing opportunity here.
AP: What's the challenge bringing your style to an already established American brand?
POSEN: GapStudio is using a totally different skill set of mine, the ability and honor to be able to kind of call the team back after ... losing a family that I had built and grown with for over 20 years of incredible artisans and craftspeople and designers that I worked with for many years that had been broken apart, is a full journey story that I actually never saw or expected in my life, and it's really meaningful. It's really beautiful to create environment in a space and to have an American institutional corporation and brand invest in creativity and talent at this level is really unprecedented.
AP: What gave you the confidence to bring your personal vision to an already established brand?
POSEN: Great question. Gap is Gap. Gap will always be evolving. The world has evolved. Great classics are always great classics. They always need those elements of elevation to them. I think design and how people dress today has changed. I think that new consumers in the marketplace are requesting elements to mix into their classics that are more elevated, that are more stylish. That's how we capture a new, younger audience.
AP: Da'Vine Joy (Randolph) and Anne Hathaway, to name a few, loved your approach to denim, and now this collection has much of it. What is it about denim for you?
POSEN: Denim is quintessentially American. It's such an incredible fiber. Right? It is cotton and it's indigo. These are two plants. I don't know. I'm a gardener. So I'll just add that. But, you know, denim is utility. Denim is artisanal. Actually, a pair of jeans that gets made has as many steps as a couture gown. You don't really realize that as a consumer. I go to the washhouses, and I see these incredible artisans kind of modeling, building, washing, scrubbing, sanding, dramaling, I mean, it's mind blowing that, you know, this world that we're living in, wearing all these jeans, have no sense of those processes.
AP: What about sustainability in fashion for you?
POSEN: For me, durability or quality is important in any piece one makes. I'm not interested in disposable clothing. Even with my gowns, I believed in quality and integrity of make and construction. And so, when you take it to a larger audience, you want pieces that can be a keepsake. I don't believe in building a collection that is age focused. This collection definitely has a voice for a new customer and definitely has cute styles for a younger customer, but it should totally be cross-generational. It should be able to work on a lot of different body types. That's how I've always designed my collections, and durability, for sure. I mean, you want pieces that can become keepsakes and beloved and passed on and shared.
AP: Gap has an established style, what do you hope to add to it?
POSEN: I think that Gap is a staple. Gap represented kind of a way of dress, a kind of modern wardrobe for the consumer that was rooted in ... classic fabrications and ... reinventing them, representing American style to the consumers all around the world. I hope to kind of hold that quality and those attributes and bring in kind of style and bring in a sense of trend and pieces that just add a little bit of that magic.
AP: Can we expect another design for this year's Met Gala?
POSEN: We will see. We will see.

This is how much it costs to get the Lauren Sanchez look

She's a one-time astronaut, trained pilot, entrepreneur, mother of three, and former television presenter, and 55-year-old Lauren Sánchez is set to make (more) headlines next week when she becomes the second Mrs Bezos. Fresh off her glamorous, no-expenses-spared hen do in Paris, where she and attendees – including Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Eva Longoria – stayed at the glitzy Hôtel Cheval Blanc, Sánchez is getting ready to tie the knot to Bezos, the third richest man in the world, in Venice. But who is the woman behind the headlines? Born and raised in Albuquerque New Mexico, she was a key member of the cheerleading squad, former beauty pageant queen and innately glamorous, kind and confident – according to those who knew her in her youth. Old photos showcase (typically 1980s) voluminous, flicked hair, a honed but curvaceous physique and killer tan, not to mention a rather bewitching glare. However, it was during her 20-year career as a TV presenter and news reporter – where gigs included So You Think You Can Dance and Good Day LA – when her beauty aesthetic really evolved from small-town beauty to glamazon. Renowned for her fierce Fox news presenter glam (think glossy blow dries, heavily-shadowed eyes and a dazzling smile) she is a symbol of a very specific American look, where visits to one's aesthetic doctor – whether for laser treatment or injectables – are non-negotiable. Her look has certainly changed over the years, with rumours swirling over various treatments she may or may not have had done since the early Noughties. It is any bride's prerogative to indulge in all her favourite treatments in the lead up to the big day, so here we take a look at those Sánchez seems to like. The tan: £250 'If Lauren Sánchez is wearing a spray tan in recent photos, it's been executed to perfection,' says James Harknett, tanner to the stars, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Kylie Minogue and Demi Moore, adding that it is expertly colour matched. 'High-profile clients expect a bespoke tan that looks like their skin, but richer. I carry more than 30 different formulas to tailor the result, but Three Warriors do one that is flattering on most skin tones.' Many well known faces have someone come to their home, the price for which is between £150 and £250. The tweakments: £1,050 Just like many of the experts consulted for this story, Dr Sophie Shotter – who is known for her natural-looking tweakments – notes that Sánchez's face looks structurally different from 10 years ago. 'Now she looks more fierce,' she says, adding that this might be as a result of surgery or injectables, like dermal filler – which costs about £650 for a syringe with Dr Shotter – in her cheeks and lips. 'She's clearly looking after her skin and I suspect she's had smatterings of muscle-relaxing injections, such as Botox [costing about £400], too – she looks really fresh,' adds Dr Shotter. The teeth: £26,000 Sánchez has an eye-catching set of pearly whites – uniform and symmetrical, dentist Dr Sam Jethwa of Bespoke Smile says it's relatively uncommon to see teeth quite so perfect without cosmetic enhancement. 'Her teeth have a glossy finish which suggests she may have veneers – these are thin porcelain shells that are placed over the front of natural teeth,' he explains. 'They can enhance the shade of the smile, create balance and facial harmony and correct imperfections such as chips, cracks, and uneven edges.' Veneers with Dr Jethwa will set you back around £1,350 to £1,630 per tooth. The nails: £700 She prefers to keep things neutral on her nails – chunky French manicures and pearlescent nudes. Tom Bachik, who also regularly works with Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez, is her go-to manicurist; the pair have worked together on a number of nail looks, with one of the most notable being a 'pink glass slipper mani' for the 2024 Met Gala. Feminine and elegant, the look evoked 'sheer iridescent glass' while drawing attention to two rather show-stopping diamonds on her fingers. While an appointment with a technician like Bachik is hard to put a price on, the most luxurious manicures in the UK can reach £700. The workout: £120 In a 2023 interview with Vogue, Sánchez revealed that she works out with the newly-muscled Bezos, calling him a 'monster in the gym'. She has shared videos of her own workouts – often with trainer Wes Okerson, who is a Hyrox athlete (competing in running and functional training workouts – not for the faint-hearted) and personal trainer. The pair do a lot of resistance training (including Nordic hamstring curls and dumbbell squat presses) to build muscle, which isn't just essential for a lean, strong physique, but good health too. £120 is the going rate for a luxury personal training session in London. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The hair: £870 Favouring long, swishy brunette lengths, Sánchez turns to hair pro Pete Burkill for her cut and colour. With clients including Anna Kendrick, Millie Bobby Brown and Sánchez's friend Natasha Poonawalla, Burkill recently took her raven lengths to a more sun-kissed shade, with stealthily-placed highlights and balayage. An age-old colourist hack to bring luminosity to the skin and frame key facial features, Sánchez's new look is perfect for summer – and, of course, for getting wed. A full head balayage and tint with Burkill at Josh Wood Salon (where he works part time) costs £575, while a cut and blow dry is £295. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lauren Sanchez (@laurenwsanchez) The cosmetic work: £24,000 Experts agree that Sánchez appears to have had facial and breast cosmetic surgery. 'When comparing earlier and more recent images, there are features suggestive of facial rejuvenation procedures,' says the cosmetic surgeon Patrick Mallucci. 'Her facial structure would suggest she's had a mid-face lift with brow lifting and rhinoplasty.' One of her close friends, Kris Jenner, 69, recently paid an estimated £100,000 for a facelift, and while the jury is out on whether Sánchez has had one too, prices for a mid-face lift in the UK can reach £15,000. Famed for his natural approach to breast augmentation, Mallucci also notes that she's had breast surgery, opting for a 'fuller, more obvious look, with round-shaped implants'. While today patients tend to opt for a more natural aesthetic, with smaller or teardrop-shaped implants, the full cleavage look is more popular in the US. In London, breast augmentation typically ranges from £8,000 to £9,000, however for a surgeon with extensive experience and a highly specialised approach, like Mr Mallucci, fees are considerably higher. The make-up: £843 Turning to Buster Knight – whose clients also include Jenner and Paris Hilton – for her glam, Sánchez favours flawless skin, a nude lip and defined eyes. You'll often find her sporting a diffused feline flick and set of ultra fluttery lashes, whether at the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda show last year or Cannes Film Festival. Knight has credited the Dr Sebagh Rose de Vie skincare range (the serum is £132) and Dr Vali's Cutis micro-contouring tool (£625) to 'get red carpet snatched' before make-up application, while her base make-up often comes courtesy of Armani Beauty's Luminous Silk Foundation (£47) and Concealer (£39). View this post on Instagram A post shared by Buster Knight🧿 (@busterknight) The other beauty treatments: £955 With a killer set of brows, it's likely that Sánchez gets her brows threaded regularly (costing £95 a session with Anu Khapung at The Dorchester). She is also a fan of lash extensions, £360 for an hour with Edy London, preferring a feathery, full effect – faux lashes are individually applied to natural hairs to create a semi-permanent look, no mascara needed. And then there are facials; with her even-toned complexion and fresh appearance, Sánchez is likely to have them regularly. Whether sculpting face massage, microneedling or LED light therapy, the UK's top London facialists combine a multitude of different modalities, for prices that can reach more than £500 for an hour appointment.

The Finn lost his F1 seat with Sauber at the end of the 2025 season and now operates as the Mercedes team reserve driver. 7 Valtteri Bottas has convinced fans he will land a new job in F1 after some cryptic social media posts Credit: X 7 Bottas was seen wearing a cowboy hat before spotting a topical car brand Credit: X 7 His cameraman pointed to the Cadillac symbol at the front of the car Credit: X 7 Bottas remarked it was a 'nice seat' as he touched the driver's seat Credit: X 7 The Finn then commented how there were two seats free Credit: X 7 Bottas was then asked if he wanted to drive it, to which he said, 'Not yet' Credit: X However, Lewis Hamilton's old team-mate has been linked with reclaiming a spot on the grid when the paddock expands to accommodate Cadillac as the 11th F1 team for 2026. And to that end, Bottas has left fans thinking an announcement over his future is imminent after he appeared to tease a partnership with the US luxury car manufacturer. Taking to social media, Bottas first shared a pair of snaps of himself at a pool table wearing a cowboy-style hat at Silver City Aspen in Colorado. But it was his second post which really got fans talking. READ MORE IN F1 HORROR SMASH Racing driver rushed to hospital after car flips in terrifying crash While out on a stroll, Bottas' cameraman, Paul Ripke, pointed out a car ahead of them, before highlighting it was a Cadillac. Having opened the door of the car, Ripke remarks: "That's a nice seat." The 35-year-old then goes and touches the seat, saying: "Oh wow, that's actually a nice seat." After a moment of looking inside the car, Ripke notes: "And there's two seats." BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Bottas looks and then looks at Ripke, saying: "And they're both free." He is then asked if he wants to sit in it, to which he replies: "Not yet." Bottas is one of the favourites to land one of the two new seats which will be up for grabs at the team next season, and would represent a wealth of experience with 246 race starts to his name, including 10 wins and 19 poles. And taking to the comments of Bottas' post, fans now believe an announcement could be coming soon, with one saying: "A code?" A second said: "Are you saying what I think you're saying, without saying it?" A third added: "That means what I think that means?" Another said: "Please lord, I don't ask for much!" A fifth said: "Yeah he's back for 26 isn't he lol." Bottas is, of course, known to be very cheeky with his social media activity, so the tease should be taken with a pinch of salt for the time being. Besides, he is facing stiff competition from the likes of Sergio Perez, who was axed by Red Bull in 2024. Motorsport icon and ex-F1 world champion Mario Andretti - one of the directors of the new team - has already confirmed the team were looking at the Mexican driver to take one of the seats. Speaking to Fox Sports in May, he said: "All I can tell you is that he's [Perez] certainly one of the drivers that's being considered. He has to be. "I cannot divulge as to where we are with any commitment whatsoever — I think we want to keep that luxury to ourselves until we feel that we have scanned the entire spectrum of availability. I think that's a prudent thing to do." Other drivers who have been linked include Mick Schumacher, Zhou Guanyu, Alex Palou, and Colton Herta. The next F1 race will commence in Austria next weekend off the back of a double Mercedes podium in Canada, which saw George Russell take the win ahead of Max Verstappen and rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

EastEnders fans are all saying the same thing about Oscar Branning

EastEnders viewers are elated to have Oscar Branning returning to the BBC One soap – for one key reason. It was confirmed on Saturday that Oscar, the younger brother of Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), will be returning to Walford following an eight year absence. The character, who was born on screen in 2007, is the son of Max (Jake Wood) and Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner). Bringing Oscar back is new executive producer Ben Wadey, who made quite the impact during his first episode last week, when he reintroduced Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) after two decades. 'I'm very excited to bring Oscar Branning back to Walford and introduce viewers to him now that he's all grown up', he said. 'Oscar is very much a Branning which means there's going to be plenty of drama in store this summer.' It was also revealed that Netflix star Pierre Moullier will take on the role, as first reported by Metro in May. Pictures showed the actor filming on location alongside his on-screen sister, plus Ian and Peter Beale legends Adam Woodyatt and Thomas Law. The group seemed to be evading an attack from three thugs brandishing a cricket bat. Ben added: 'We're delighted to welcome Pierre as he takes on the role and can't wait for viewers to see him bring Oscar to life.' A new addition is always welcome on Albert Square – but even more so when fans are so enthused about the casting. Metro readers flocked to social media to comment on the striking resemblance between Pierre and Jake Wood, who is also tipped to reprise his Max role. 'Wowsers I'll give the casting directors something… the kid could be Max's IRL' said @thmshooper. @matricharchybaby added: 'He looks just like max omg.' 'Looks like Max. Excellent casting' commented @alaladelad. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? 'What a casting he's defo gonna be a mini Max' shared @mishybabez_. @guineasfinest agreed, writing: 'This unreal casting. Max Branning twin.' …and the replies didn't stop there. The last time we saw the character, he was portrayed by child star Charlee Hall. As a result, he was never at the centre of a huge story – though could be heard quite prominently during the reveal of Max's affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner). More Trending Following the explosive fall out in that iconic Christmas Day episode, the youngster was crying upstairs. Tanya rushed to attend to him and pack her bags, and was sent tumbling down the staircase. On joining the serial drama, Pierre said: ''It keeps hitting me that I'm actually on Albert Square!' 'When I found out I was joining the Brannings, it was so exciting as they are such an iconic family, and I love that there are so many skeletons in the closet.
