Trouble is mounting for former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as the country's war crimes court has formally ordered her to return and stand trial. 'The court directed the prosecution team to issue a notice as soon as possible, summoning her to appear before the court,' said Muhammad Tajul Islam, chief prosecutor of Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal, on Monday. Hasina faces grave charges amounting to crimes against humanity. Her government was overthrown last August amid widespread mass protests, forcing her to flee Dhaka and seek refuge in India.

UK report downplays minority persecution in Bangladesh

New Delhi: A report released by the UK Home Office has claimed that the minorities in Bangladesh are unlikely to face persecution from state and non-state actors. The view contrasts sharply with the violence and the anti-minority stance adhered to by people allegedly close to the caretaker government in the country after Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power last year. The report, released this month, also claimed that people belonging to minority communities are unlikely to be arrested and charged for actions that can be construed as an insult to Islam. After Hasina resigned and fled her country in August last year, there have been several instances of violence targeting people of minority communities, especially the Hindus. India has been raising the issue of violence and persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh at the highest level. The UK report claimed that religious minorities can practice their faith freely throughout Bangladesh without harassment. It, however, said that there have been instances of sporadic communal violence, most recently tied to political upheaval, which continue to result in injuries, assaults, deaths and damage to property. Dhaka-based sources told ET that the minority communities in Bangladesh have been under duress ever since the Awami League was ousted from power, and there have been numerous instances of harassment, contrary to what the UK Home Office has claimed. During the August 2024 political unrest in Bangladesh , members of minority religious groups faced harassment and violence. However, according to the report, many cases were politically motivated rather than based on religious differences.

China hosts first trilateral with Pakistan, Bangladesh

New Delhi: China has played host to foreign secretaries of Pakistan and Bangladesh in the first-ever trilateral format, a development viewed as significant in India. The foreign secretaries agreed to enhance trilateral cooperation in various sectors such as trade, investment, health, education and maritime affairs in their meeting held in Kunming in Yunnan province of China on Thursday, the Chinese foreign ministry said. China's vice foreign minister Sun Weidong, Bangladesh's acting foreign secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique and Pakistan's additional secretary (Asia Pacific) Imran Ahmed Siddiqui attended the meeting. Pakistan's foreign secretary Amna Baloch participated in the first phase of the meeting via video link. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like IELTS Cheat Sheet: Grab Your Free Tips! It claimed that China-Pakistan-Bangladesh cooperation adheres to true multilateralism and open regionalism, not directed at any third party. Pakistan, whose ties with Bangladesh under PM Sheikh Hasina were lukewarm, has boosted its collaboration with Dhaka since last August across a slew of areas including defence, trade, diplomacy and people-to-people connect. The Pakistan Army and ISI are believed to have played a key role in Hasina's ouster. Live Events Pakistan, which is looking to strengthen its ties with Bangladesh under the interim administration, is not only seeking to firm up defence partnership but also push trade and investment ties. Since last November, the Chittagong Port has received two ships carrying commercial items from Pakistan and there are attempts to scuttle India's access to the port. China, which initially went on the backfoot following Hasina's ouster, has made inroads in the interim regime riding on the economic partnership.

Police involve RWAs in New Town, neighbouring areas for tenant check

Kolkata: Bidhannagar police are reaching out to residents' welfare association (RWA) office bearers of residential housing complexes in New Town and other parts of the commissionerate, asking them to furnish a list of tenants living there and ensure all of them police clearance certificates. If the list does not match the database available with the police, they are calling up the landlords and tenants to immediately fill up a KYC verification form or face a penalty. Last month, Bidhannagar police issued an order requiring all landlords to provide tenant details to local police stations before renting out properties. "Now, a police clearance certificate is a must for every tenant, as well as paying guests staying within our commissionerate jurisdiction, be it in gated complexes or stand-alone houses. We are appealing to all RWAs to help us in this process," said an officer. A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is an official document issued by the police or govt agency of a country to certify that an individual has no criminal record or has not been involved in any criminal activity that resulted in a criminal conviction. Speaking to TOI, RWA office bearers of multiple complexes said they have attended the meetings at police stations and their complexes. "Cops have told us to maintain a database of tenants along with basic details, like names, tower and flat number, number of persons staying in one flat, duration of stay, their occupations, as well as names and phone numbers of brokers and landlords, and submit it to the local police station," said an RWA official from VIP Road. An RWA official from New Town said 25% of the 800 flats in the complex are occupied by tenants, a large share of whom are Bangladeshi. "We are cooperating with cops," he said. Tausif Ali Azhar, DCP, Special Branch of Bidhannagar police, told TOI they have issued notices to 93 landlords for renting properties without submission of PCC and background checks on tenants. "We are giving them 7 days, and if they do not furnish the documents by then, they will be penalised."
