200 smart AI powered cameras start to detect traffic violations

Mangaluru: Nearly 200 smart cameras installed on Mangaluru city roads by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) have started capturing images of traffic violators. Once implemented fully, the intelligent traffic management system will send auto-generated traffic slips to the mobile phones of vehicle owners.
Mangaluru City traffic police have already commenced the trial run, and violators have been receiving alert messages on their phones. However, the system will be officially launched in July, and thereafter, violators will have to pay penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Rules.
The high-resolution cameras installed at prominent locations in the city started detecting various violations, including two-wheeler riding without a helmet, car driving without a seat belt, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping.
The MSCL installed nearly 200 artificial intelligence cameras at various locations on the main roads of the city. High-resolution cameras equipped with AI tools are monitoring traffic flow and effectively detecting violations.
The cameras provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools analyse the captured footage to identify and track traffic offences.
DCP (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar told TOI that the entire system is under a trial run and it will be made fully functional from July 1.
"Those who violate traffic rules will receive messages on their mobile phones during the trial run. However, we are not framing charges based on the camera inputs for the time being. We are planning to launch the system from next month with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
All cameras are linked to the NIC. After completing all necessary procedures, the system will be in place to check traffic violations in the city. In the next 10 days, we will be able to rectify all technical issues," he said.
Smart cameras have been installed on MG Road, Bendoorwell, Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Mallikatta, Bejai, and several other locations.

Dr. Joshi said that among the 245 deceased whose DNA matched successfully, 176 are Indian citizens, 7 Portuguese, 49 British citizens, one Canadian, and 12 non-passengers. The DNA profiling was necessitated as the impact of the crash left most victims unidentifiable. So far, the bodies of 20 non-passengers have been handed over to the families of the victims which include eight bodies, visually identifiable, that were handed over to their families last week, including four doctors, without the need for DNA matching. The crash occurred on June 12 when a London-bound Air India Dreamliner aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 241 of the 242 passengers and crew members onboard. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin, emerged as the lone survivor, defying the odds in one of India's deadliest aviation disasters. The impact devastated a nearby medical college residential block, claiming several lives on the ground. At least 30 non-passengers have died due to the crash. Dr. Joshi provided a detailed breakdown of the 245 bodies handed over to families across multiple regions and states. A total of 175 bodies were handed over to families in Gujarat, with Ahmedabad receiving 70, followed by Anand (26) and Vadodara (24). Other Gujarat locations include Surat (12), Kheda (11), Bharuch (7), Gandhinagar (7), Mehsana (7), Gir Somnath (5), Rajkot (3), Patan (3), Dwarka (2), Jamnagar (2), Khambhat (2), Amreli (2), Aravalli (2), and one each from Junagadh, Mahisagar, Bhavnagar, Botad, Palanpur, Nadiad, Sabarkantha, and Modasa. Outside Gujarat, 34 bodies were handed over across other Indian states. Maharashtra received 12 bodies (including 10 in Mumbai), Rajasthan 3 (including 1 in Jodhpur), and one each from Patna, Pune, Nagaland, and Manipur. Additionally, 14 bodies were handed over in Diu, the Union Territory. Ten bodies were sent to London, while 12 non-passenger casualties were also included in the total count. Lawrence Danielbhai Christian, a member of CNI Church Maninagar who died in the plane crash, was laid to rest on Sunday, according to a person close to the family. His funeral service was held at 12 noon in the Ramol area of Ahmedabad. The 30-year-old had come to India to bury his father, but two weeks later, the family was mourning another tragic loss.

Ahmedabad crash victim's mortal remains reach Manipur, thousands pay tributes

Thousands of people lined up on both sides of the roads to pay tributes to Ahmedabad crash victim Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, whose mortal remains were brought to Manipur on Sunday (June 22, 2025). Sharma was an air crew member of the London-bound Air India flight AI 171 which crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar moments after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm on June 12, killing 270 people, including 241 on board. One passenger survived. "The moment was profoundly moving... She was received with deep dignity, solemn respect, and heartfelt sorrow by Team Imphal Airport, not merely as colleagues in uniform but as family in mourning -- united in silence and reverence. With bowed heads and heavy hearts, she was tenderly handed over to her family, friends, and loved ones, whose presence spoke volumes of the love they carry and the void her absence leaves behind," Imphal airport said in a post on Facebook. A cousin of Nganthoi Sharma said that airport officials, family members and others paid floral tributes to her mortal remains after it was brought to Imphal airport aboard an IndiGo flight. Her mortal remains were accompanied by her father and elder sister who had gone to Ahmedabad for DNA testing, she added. The mortal remains were later taken to her residence in Thoubal on an open truck as thousands lined up on both sides of the road to pay their tributes. Her last rites would be conducted later in the evening, another family member said. The mortal remains of another crew member from Manipur, Lamnunthem Singson, were brought to the state on June 19. The remains were brought to Kangpokpi district via road from Dimapur airport aboard an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad. Her final rites were conducted the next day.

AI-171 wreckage moved for probe: Truck carrying tail section gets stuck in tree near Shahibaug; traffic halted as police clear path

AHMEDABAD: During the clearance of the Air India Flight 171 crash site in Ahmedabad on Sunday, a truck carrying the aircraft's tail section got stuck near the ACB office near Shahibaug Dafnala after the tail became entangled in a tree. The mishap occurred while the truck was moving the wreckage for further examination. As the tailpiece got lodged in the tree, police authorities were forced to block the road from Shahibaug Dafnala to Camp Hanuman Mandir to ensure safety and allow emergency teams to intervene. Personnel from the police department arrived at the spot along with some locals and detached the tail portion from the tree after trimming branches without causing further obstruction or damage. Traffic on the busy stretch was halted for some time, causing inconvenience to commuters. However, police officials managed to complete the operation swiftly. Once the wreckage was freed and the truck resumed its journey, the road was reopened for public movement. No injuries or property damage were reported in the incident. The aircraft parts are being transported under supervision as part of the ongoing investigation and reconstruction process following the crash of AI171, said ACP of G division VN Yadav. The wreckage will be kept in a hangar for further inquiry into the case, which is being conducted by multiple national and international agencies. On June 12, the AI171 airplane bound for London from the SVPI (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel) airport in Ahmedabad city crashed in Meghaninagar, in which 241 passengers were killed.
