Ahmedabad crash victim's mortal remains reach Manipur, thousands pay tributes
Thousands of people lined up on both sides of the roads to pay tributes to Ahmedabad crash victim Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, whose mortal remains were brought to Manipur on Sunday (June 22, 2025).
Sharma was an air crew member of the London-bound Air India flight AI 171 which crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad's Meghaninagar moments after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 pm on June 12, killing 270 people, including 241 on board. One passenger survived.
"The moment was profoundly moving... She was received with deep dignity, solemn respect, and heartfelt sorrow by Team Imphal Airport, not merely as colleagues in uniform but as family in mourning -- united in silence and reverence. With bowed heads and heavy hearts, she was tenderly handed over to her family, friends, and loved ones, whose presence spoke volumes of the love they carry and the void her absence leaves behind," Imphal airport said in a post on Facebook.
A cousin of Nganthoi Sharma said that airport officials, family members and others paid floral tributes to her mortal remains after it was brought to Imphal airport aboard an IndiGo flight.
Her mortal remains were accompanied by her father and elder sister who had gone to Ahmedabad for DNA testing, she added.
The mortal remains were later taken to her residence in Thoubal on an open truck as thousands lined up on both sides of the road to pay their tributes. Her last rites would be conducted later in the evening, another family member said.
The mortal remains of another crew member from Manipur, Lamnunthem Singson, were brought to the state on June 19. The remains were brought to Kangpokpi district via road from Dimapur airport aboard an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad. Her final rites were conducted the next day.

Aircraft tail snag briefly halts crash site clean-up
Ahmedabad: During the clearance of the Air India Flight 171 crash site in Ahmedabad on Sunday, the aircraft's tail section got lodged in a tree near the Anti-Corruption Bureau office (ACB) in Shahibaug Dafnala. The tail was part of the wreckage being transported in a truck to the airport for further examination as part of an ongoing probe, said V N Yadav, ACP, G Division. Bomb hoax by passenger delays flight at city airport
Vadodara: A 51-year-old man with a learning disability triggered panic at Vadodara airport on Sunday evening after falsely claiming that he had a bomb in his bag. The incident caused a major security scare and delayed an Air India flight to Delhi by more than 90 minutes, officials said. The man, who was travelling alone and scheduled to take a connecting flight to New York from Delhi, made the claim during a routine security check by CISF personnel. Initially, he stated he was carrying a bomb, but when questioned further, he began laughing and told officials he was "just joking." However, airport authorities followed standard protocol and initiated a full-scale emergency response. Multiple security and intelligence agencies — including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Vadodara city police, Special Operations Group (SOG), Police Control Board (PCB), and state and central intelligence bureaus — were deployed to handle the situation. Nepali woman held at Bengaluru airport with forged Indian passport
Bengaluru: A 32-year-old Nepali woman, Mina Kumari Dhamena, was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) after she attempted to board a flight to Abu Dhabi using a forged Indian passport. According to a complaint filed by immigration officer Vijeyanta Singha, Mina reported to the immigration wing at Terminal 2 around 11pm on June 19. She was scheduled to travel on IndiGo flight 6E1419. She presented passport number V8321978 at the counter. The officer on duty grew suspicious during routine questioning. Mina told officials she was visiting Abu Dhabi as a tourist. However, her responses and behaviour prompted the officer to escalate the matter to senior officials. Upon further questioning, she confessed to being a Nepalese, who had entered India in 2012 via a check post in Uttar Pradesh with her husband. The couple had initially stayed in Mathikere before moving to Subbaiahnapalya in east Bengaluru, where they currently reside.
