Trent Alexander-Arnold STARTS for Real Madrid as England defender makes long-awaited debut for Spanish giants in Club World Cup clash after leaving Liverpool

Daily Mail2 days ago

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been named in Real Madrid's starting XI as he makes his long-awaited debut for the Spanish giants.
Madrid kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Al-Hilal at Inter Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, the home of Lionel Messi, on Wednesday evening.
Alexander-Arnold, simply known as Trent on the back of his Madrid shirt, is playing in his first club game since he ended his 20-year association with boyhood side Liverpool.
The right-back has chosen the number 12 shirt and wowed supporters with his fluent Spanish at his unveiling last week.
Los Blancos paid Liverpool £10million for the defender despite his contract expiring, so that they could guarantee his involvement in the Club World Cup.
They will hope that the Englishman, who has signed a six-year deal, can spearhead them to a sixth title, having last won it in 2022.
Real Madrid paid Liverpool £10m so they could secure the defender's services a month early
On Monday, the 26-year-old spoke for the first time about how he is adapting to life as a Galactico and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jnr.
'Hot to start with but a good session with some good things,' he told the club's website.
'[It was] good to get a feel of the ball and a feel of the heat training in this climate so it was a good session.
'[It was] high quality. The ball moves very fast. Obviously it's a lot different to what I'm used to in terms of the players and the style of play but it's good and I'm enjoying the change and I'm enjoying being a part of it. It feels really good and I'm happy to be here to be honest.'
Before his unveiling as a Real player at the Bernabeu last week, Alexander-Arnold embarked on a tour of the club's facilities, where he was even shown some of the club's recent Champions League trophies.
Wednesday's fixture also marks Xabi Alonso's first game as Madrid boss after taking over from Carlo Ancelotti.
Madrid lifted the Club World Cup trophy three years in a row between 2016 and 2018 and begin the tournament against Saudi side Al-Hilal.
The Riyadh-based outfit finished second in the Saudi Pro League and boast Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in their squad.
They appointed Simone Inzahgi, who led Inter Milan to the Champions League final less than three weeks ago, as manager earlier this month.
Madrid will face Mexican side Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg as they look to top their group.

Chelsea sent warning over £43m Man Utd and Liverpool transfer target

Chelsea have been warned they will be making a mistake if they peruse the signing of Manchester United and Liverpool traget Malick Fofana. The Lyon youngster is in high-demand after an eye-catching campaign for the Ligue 1 club who have already sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City this summer. Fofana is likely to command a fee in the region of £43million for a player they signed from Gent in January 2024 for just £17m. Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas, however, believes Fofana should not be a player Chelsea are focusing on buying this summer, even if rival clubs could benefit from his talent. 'Malick Fofana is a young player that is still learning and I don't think that is the right move,' Gallas told Prime Casino. 'Chelsea have a lot of forward players already and I think they need experienced defenders now. They have won the Conference League but that right centre-back position is the one I'd look at, not wingers.' The Blues are currently involved in Club World Cup action in America and it remains to be seen what impact that tournament will have on their preparations ahead of the new Premier League season. Chelsea appear to have been handed a kind start to the season after the fixtures were announced earlier this week, but Gallas is concerned games against the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton will be far tougher in reality than on paper. He added: 'Chelsea will want to get off to a good start as they look to go and finish in the top four and be in the race to win the title, but they've got a difficult start. Liverpool make damning Darwin Nunez decision after transfer U-turn

Darwin Nunez looks likely to leave Liverpool this summer, with reigning Serie A champions Napoli interested in bringing the striker to Naples to provide support for Romelu Lukaku Liverpool have reportedly lowered their asking price for Darwin Nunez, with the Reds keen to quickly seal the forward's exit. Liverpool broke their transfer record when they forked out around £85million to sign Nunez from Benfica back in 2022. However, he has struggled for game time under Arne Slot, with the Uruguay international making just eight Premier League starts last season. He also struggled in front of goal, netting just seven times in 47 appearances across all competitions. ‌ And Slot publicly criticised Nunez's attitude and work-rate after a disappointing miss against Aston Villa in February. "For the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa," Slot said at the time. ‌ "I always try to be honest with my players and be honest as I can to you guys as well where I always try to protect my players so I don't say he never worked hard. I know him differently. I know him at Villa at home where he made a 100 metre sprint and scored a goal, I know him when he came on at City at home and was pressing really aggressively and wins the ball back and we score. "But I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was a bit too much." As a result, Nunez has been heavily linked with a move away from Anfield this summer and reports from Italy claim that Liverpool are willing to accept offers of around €50m (£42.7m) plus add-ons for the striker. Liverpool did reject an approach from Al-Nassr in the January transfer window, despite the Saudi Pro League side being willing to pay around £70m for Nunez. The report adds that Napoli have already made an offer worth around €43m (£37m) and are hoping to conclude a deal soon. Napoli claimed their fourth Serie A title under Antonio Conte last season and are moving to strengthen their squad ahead of their defence, having already signed Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer from Manchester City. ‌ Romelu Lukaku was their leading goalscorer last season, netting 14 league goals in 36 games, and Napoli are keen to take some of the burden off the former Chelsea and Manchester United striker. Victor Osimhen is expected to be sold by Napoli this summer, having spent last season out on loan at Galatasaray. The Turkish side are hoping to sign him permanently, but Manchester United have also been linked with the 26-year-old.
