'I'm going to protect my teammates.' Sophie Cunningham gains nearly a million followers after ejection
LAS VEGAS – Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham will always stick up for her teammates. Even if that includes being part of a late-game melee.
Cunningham was ejected from the Fever's game Tuesday after committing a flagrant 2 foul on Sun guard Jacy Sheldon, pulling her down by the head as she was going up for a layup. Sheldon and fellow Sun guard Lindsay Allen immediately reacted, rushing Cunningham and pushing her back into the fans sitting on the baseline. Cunningham grabbed Sheldon's hair as their other teammates and officials ran in, working to separate them.
It turned into what the officials and league eventually ruled a fight — Cunningham was ejected because of the foul on Sheldon, while Sheldon and Allen were both giving technical fouls for fighting and ejected.
It was the second scrum of the night, with the first coming midway through the third quarter. Sheldon poked Fever star Caitlin Clark in the eye, and Clark immediately recoiled and reacted, turning to Sheldon as the two shoved each other. Sun center Tina Charles got in between the two, but Sun guard Marina Mabrey also came running into the scrum, puffing out her chest and knocking Clark to the ground.
A lot of people, including media and fans across the league, thought Mabrey would get ejected for that hit. She was instead given a technical foul, as the referees thought "the contact made by Mabrey did not rise to the level of an ejection. Additionally, (it) did not meet the criteria for a flagrant foul penalty two," according to a postgame pool report conducted by IndyStar. Clark and Charles were also given technical fouls for acting in an "unsportsmanlike manner," while Sheldon's foul was upgraded to a flagrant 1.

So, that second dustup, Cunningham said Saturday, was a buildup of multiple years of poor officiating and her desire to stick up for her teammates.
"I'm not focused on the extracurricular activities, and you know what, during that, it was just part of the game," Cunningham said. "I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build up for a couple years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. So, at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates, that's what I do, and I'm a team player."
Fever coach Stephanie White also admonished the referees after the game, saying they allowed the game to get out of control on separate instances.
Cunningham saw a lot of support from Fever fans immediately, as they were chanting "Sophie! Sophie!" during the review period and when she was eventually ejected. She has also has seen a significant surge in popularity over the past week.
Her jersey first sold out in the Fever team store. She has gained nearly 300,000 followers on Instagram and jumped from 300,000 to over 1.2 million followers on TikTok. She posted a video playing into what happened on Tuesday, lip-syncing "Can't keep my hands to myself / I mean I could, but why would I want to?" from the song "Hands to Myself" by Selena Gomez on Friday, with the caption "It's a joke... the sound was too fitting!" .
"It's cool, its funny what people are kind of attracted to," Cunningham said Saturday of gaining so many followers. "I'm just trying to keep the main thing the main thing, and that's basketball, trying to win games, sticking up for my teammates, that's all part of it."

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy) NEW YORK (AP) — Liberty center Jonquel Jones will be out four to six week after spraining her right ankle, the team announced Saturday. Jones sprained her ankle during the second quarter of an 89-81 loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday night. Advertisement 'After further imaging and evaluation, Jonquel avoided long-term injury, and she is projected to return to game action in approximately four-to-six weeks," the team said in a statement. Jones had to be helped off the court after injuring the same ankle on June 5 against Washington. She missed two games after that injury. The 6-foot-6 center was drafted sixth overall in 2016, and played for the Connecticut Sun for six seasons before coming to New York as part of a three-team deal in January 2023. Jones is averaging 12.1 points and 9.6 rebounds this season. The Liberty kick off a four-game road trip Sunday at Seattle. ___ AP WNBA:

Mercury's Alyssa Thomas emotionally reacts to Connecticut return
The post Mercury's Alyssa Thomas emotionally reacts to Connecticut return appeared first on ClutchPoints. Although the Phoenix Mercury celebrated Alyssa Thomas's return to Connecticut, it was filled with emotion and appreciation for her former club. Advertisement When Thomas was traded to the Mercury in January, it signaled a new chapter in her career. However, during her introductory press conference, media day, and training camp, her sentiment remained the same. She was ready for a new challenge. Phoenix picked up its ninth win of the season against the Sun, 83-75. Following the game, the storyline zeroed in on Thomas and her feelings about the return. (It was) definitely emotional,' Thomas said postgame. 'I think I gave this organization everything I had, and the fanbase was always behind me, supporting whether we were winning or losing. 'So, just super grateful for them to come out and get their support.' Advertisement Her tenure with the Mercury has been impressive up to this point. She marked her fourth consecutive game with 10+ assists. The roster has been constructed to fit her play style, as they've surrounded her with elite shooters. Statistically speaking, she's having one of the best seasons of her career. Her 9.8 assists with the Mercury are the highest of her career. That's only a part of what she brought from Connecticut to the Valley. Mercury's Alyssa Thomas appreciates the Connecticut fanbase © Eric Canha-Imagn Images For the first handful of season, the Sun were not shining bright. In fact, it was the opposite. A dark cloud went over the franchise. However, once they added Jonquel Jones and DeWanna Bonner, the culture was set. Advertisement That, combined with head coach Stephanie White, along with elite role players had Connecticut rolling. They were consistently one of the top, if not, the top defensive team in the league. That defensive identity is Thomas's bread and butter, and something that has stayed with the franchise. Not to mention, the Sun reached two WNBA Finals trips in 2019 and 2022. Although both ended in losses, Thomas has been close to the mountain top. The individual success, along with her team's success has been apparent. Now, it's about providing her with the right resources, and the Mercury have done just that. Advertisement Elite shooting, playmakers, and positionless basketball have engrained Phoenix fans, and the WNBA. At the end of the day, the former Maryland Terrapins star has the Mercury in legitimate contention. Her skillset is amongst the best in the league. When the trio of Satou Sabally, Kahleah Copper, and Thomas all play consistently, the rest of the league could have a problem stopping the team's death lineup.
