TGICCC holds coordination meet with IMD in Hyd'bad
Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological department (IMD) Hyderabad head Dr K Nagaratna on Thursday highlighted the utilisation of advanced tools such as Doppler weather radar-imaging, met satellite images, numerical weather predictions and GIS-based special imaging to integrating met data into the city's emergency response systems.
A high-level coordination meeting was convened under the leadership of Director V B Kamalasan Reddy at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) War Room. The meeting focused on strengthening monsoon preparedness.
During the meeting, Dr Nagaratna provided comprehensive insights into IMD forecasting capabilities, including nowcast, mid-range, extended range, and long-range forecasts. She discussed synoptic features like low-level jet (LLJ), tropical easterly jet (TEJ) and Tibetan plateau positions, which are crucial for accurate weather forecasting.
The meeting emphasised the importance of integrating IMD data with TGICCC advanced systems, including the integrated traffic management system (ITMS), automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system, public addressing system (PAS) and variable message display boards (VMBs). A review of the types and technical specifications of cameras currently deployed at TGICCC was also conducted to ensure optimal functionality during the monsoon.
Key discussions included analysis of heavy rainfall over the past decade, advance of the Southwest Monsoon-2025 and frequency of cold and heat waves. Dissemination of advisories, alerts and warnings through various media, including SACHET mobile application, was also deliberated to ensure timely communication with officials and the public.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from all departments to work in synergy, leveraging technological advancements and meteorological data to ensure safety and well-being of citizens during the monsoon.

IMD forecasted 'isolated heavy rainfall' in West Bengal and Sikkim until June 22; in Madhya Pradesh until June 25; and in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on June 21 and between June 24 and 26. In addition to this, similar weather conditions are expected in Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat until June 26; in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan until June 26; and in Jammu and Kashmir until June 21 and from June 25 to 26. The Regional Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert for rains in the Delhi-NCR region today. The yellow warning will be lifted on June 23, the report said. Delhi residents can expect, 'Generally, cloudy sky, very light to light rain/ thunderstorm/ lightening with gusty winds.' Wet spells are expected to continue over the next 5-6 days. The maximum temperature will settle around 35-37 degrees Celsius today while the minimum temperature will hover around 25-27 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are predicted to be around 77 percent.

Early monsoon in Delhi; likely to arrive by June 24: IMD

According to the India Meteorological Department's forecast, given the pace at which the monsoon is advancing, it is likely to arrive three days before the normal onset of the rainy season in the capital. Happily, the forecast is for a normal monsoon this season. IMD has predicted that while the country is expected to receive above-normal rainfall, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and UP will, as a meteorological region, receive normal rainfall in the range of 92-108% of the long-period average. "Conditions are favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea, some more parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and some more parts of Ladakh during the next two days," said IMD's Friday bulletin. "Conditions are also becoming favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of J&K, Ladakh; some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi in the subsequent two days. Friday was a humid day with grey skies. Some areas of the city saw light rain, with the Ridge recording 6.2mm and Pusa logging 0.5mm. The wind speed will gradually decrease and slow down to 10-12 kmph from the southeast direction in the afternoon. The wind will pick up some speed and reach around 15kmph from the southeast direction by the evening and night, said the IMD forecast. On Friday, the air was more or less breathable with the air quality index in the 'satisfactory' category. AQI read 75 against 89 the previous day.

Rain triggers landslides at several places in Himachal; orange alert issued
The first spell of Southwest monsoon which reached Himachal Pradesh on Friday triggered landslides at several places. The local Met office on Friday issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places on June 22, 23, 25 and 26. Traffic on the Dharmshala-Chataro-Gaggal road was halted due to a landslide, and officials are currently engaged in road-clearing operations, officials said. Reports also emerged of water logging at the Shahid Inder Singh Middle School in Pandoh, which caused inconvenience for students. The Met Office issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rains in isolated parts of the state on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and a yellow warning for heavy rains in isolated areas on Tuesday. Some parts of Shimla witnessed power outages along with landslide with many roads getting blocked in Kangra district. In Shimla, power outages were reported in several areas, with residents complaining of no electricity for the past 10 hours as of Friday morning. The affected areas include Kanlog, Sanjauli, and nearby localities. Residents of these areas said that the power supply was disrupted around midnight, and repeated calls to the local electricity department went unanswered. Landslide was reported in Jutogh Cantt area in Shimla. A four-wheeler was completely damaged after coming under the landslide here. Meanwhile, the electricity supply which had gone out around 12 midnight was only restored around 1pm on Friday. Vipin Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer, electricity department, said, 'A power panel has developed a technical snag due to increased moisture in the environment during the ongoing rain. It will take some time to repair the panel. Many of its wires have been affected by carbon deposits. We need to repair all the wires and then dry them using small boilers.'Shimla electricity officer Lokesh Thakur admitted there was an issue. 'There is a fault in the main electricity line supplying power to Kanlog, near the Central Potato Research Institute building. Our staff is working to fix the issue. The rain has made the restoration work more challenging. Electricity supply has been restored in some parts of Sanjauli. Our staff members are on the job,' he added.
