Evacuated London train passengers forced to walk along tracks on hottest day of year

Scores of UK passengers were forced to evacuate trains and walk along the tracks on Saturday after some services were halted due to a fault on the hottest day of the year so far. Videos posted on social media showed people walking on the tracks beside Thameslink trains near Loughborough Junction station in south London. Some passengers complained on social media about being forced to wait onboard services without air conditioning for up to two hours. Angela Lewis posted a video on X of passengers gathered outside Loughborough Junction, along with the words: 'After nearly two hours on the stuck train to Gatwick we are abandoned outside.' A follow-up post said: 'Was it entirely necessary to keep us waiting nearly two hours in stuck in an overheated carriage for that? we should have been out within 30 minutes max.' Another user wrote to Thameslink: 'You will have hell to pay. We've been stuck on this hot and humid train for over an hour.' A Thameslink spokesperson replied: 'This train will be getting evacuated shortly. Please wait until response staff have boarded and set up a safe evacuation route.' Govia Thameslink Railway and Network Rail have apologised for the delays. A Thameslink spokesperson said: 'Earlier today, a fault on a train near Loughborough Junction brought all services to a halt in the area, three of them outside station platforms. 'Without power and air conditioning on such a hot day, we pulled all resources from across Sussex and Kent to get personnel on site to safely evacuate passengers as quickly as possible along the track. 'This would have been a difficult and uncomfortable experience for our passengers and we are truly sorry.' The Met Office said there was a provisional temperature of more than 33C recorded in Surrey, making Saturday the hottest day of the year so far. A yellow warning for thunderstorms covering parts of south-east Scotland, Yorkshire, the Midlands and Wales has been issued for Saturday evening until 3am on Sunday. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in less than two hours, the Met Office said, as it urged those in the warning areas to consider whether their location was at risk of flash flooding and to prepare accordingly. An amber heat-health alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency for the first time since September 2023, for all regions in England remains in place over the weekend.

Blood lollies and sunscreen: Zoo's heatwave relief

Animals at Lincoln Zoo have been cooling down with ice lollies, including some made with blood to whet appetites, as temperatures in the county hit 32.2C on Saturday. Director Neil Mumby said: "It's unusually hot, so we have to look after the animals. We'll hide the lollies in as many different places as we can." The Met Office office said Lincolnshire's highest temperature was recorded at Coningsby. Sunday is expected to be fresher, with temperatures of around 24C. Mr Mumby said keepers were keeping a close eye on animals that cope less well with the heat. "They've all got shade and water in all of the enclosures, but over and above that, when it gets to these sort of temperatures, we will give them ice enrichment throughout the day - frozen fruit or frozen lollipops and frozen meat, all sorts of different things." The BBC spotted a Sri Lankan sloth bear trying to extract frozen lactose-free milk from a tube, as a group of spider monkeys from Columbia sucked on frozen fruit. Meanwhile, Arctic wolves - less attuned to heatwaves - tucked into ice lollies made from blood. "We get lots of meat, and we've got lots of animals that eat meat and that comes with blood, so we freeze that," said Mr Mumby. "The wolves... they were loving it. Animals with natural bald patches got a coating of sun screen. "The tapir …his nose is quite susceptible," Mr Mumby explained. "It's quite a large animal, as big as a large pig, and he's got a nose a bit like an elephant's. So he's a peculiar creature, but a lovely, lovely animal." A temperature of 33.2C was recorded in Charlwood, near Gatwick, on Saturday afternoon, beating the previous 2025 record set earlier this week. A Met Office warning for parts of northern England, the Scottish Borders and Wales, is in place from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with the heat and humidity expected to fuel torrential downpours. Pictures as the North East enjoys fun in the sun on the hottest day of the year

Thousands of people across the North East ventured out to soak up the sunshine today as a heatwave continues to sweep across the nation. Taking a dip, bathing in the sun and enjoying tasty ice cream were just some of the things the region got up to today (June 21) as temperatures soared across the country. Today, the UK recorded the hottest day of the year so far as the Met Office said there was a provisional temperature of more than 33C measured in Surrey. As well as the 33.2C high in Charlwood, temperatures of 26.9C were provisionally recorded in Bute Park in Cardiff and 27.2C in Aviemore in the Highlands, the weather service said on Saturday afternoon. In Darlington and wider County Durham, temperatures reached highs of 28C as hundreds escaped to the beach, setting up parasols and paddling in the sea. Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside and Seaburn in Sunderland were swarmed by sun seekers making the most of their weekend. However, despite the sunshine, a yellow warning for thunderstorms covering the region has been issued by the Met Office as it said there could be frequent lightning, large hail, strong winds and heavy rain. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in less than two hours, the forecaster said, as it urged those in the warning areas to consider whether their location is at risk of flash flooding and to prepare accordingly. The warning is in place from 5pm on Saturday until 3am on Sunday. Here are just a few pictures from today, what did you get up to in the sunny weather?
