Kerala: Heavy rains in Kannur, Kakkad river water-level rises; several areas waterlogged
Kochi: After heavy rains lashed Kannur (in Kerala) on Friday, the water level of the Kakkad river rose, leading to waterlogged areas in parts of the coastal city.
Waterlogged roads slowed down traffic, and commuters faced significant difficulty.
Many districts of the state received heavy rainfall, disrupting everyday life and causing waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts and orange alerts for the remaining districts today.
Authorities in several districts have declared holidays for educational institutions under their jurisdiction.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), strong westerly winds are likely to persist at lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region for the next two to three days, resulting in widespread rainfall.
The IMD stated, "Strong westerlies likely to continue at lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region during the next 2-3 days. Under the influence of these, widespread rainfall activity with scattered Heavy rainfall to Very Heavy rainfall with isolated Extremely Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over Kerala on 29th & 30th May 2025. Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Kerala on 31st May, 1st and 2nd June 2025."
District administrations across Kerala have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in several districts on May 30 (Friday).
The precautionary measure applies to professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centres, madrassas, and special coaching classes.
With an Orange alert in effect for Ernakulam, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions, including professional colleges. Anganwadis and tuition centers will also remain closed, as confirmed by District Collector NSK Umesh.
All educational institutions, including Kendriya Vidyalayas, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrassas, and tuition centres, will remain closed in Kasaragod on Friday. Exams previously scheduled will be conducted as planned.
The District Collector declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, summer coaching camps, religious study centres, and tuition centres in Kottayam. MG University has postponed all exams scheduled for May 30. Pre-scheduled exams in other institutions will proceed.
In Thrissur, due to heavy rains, a holiday has been announced for all institutions, including CBSE, ICSE schools, anganwadis, tuition centers, and professional colleges. However, scheduled examinations and interviews will not be postponed.
All educational institutions, including professional colleges, madrassas, tuition centres, and training institutes, will remain closed in Idukki. Residential schools and colleges are exempted. Summer coaching classes are not permitted. School heads are instructed to conduct catch-up classes, including online sessions.
In Wayanad, a holiday has been announced for all institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, madrassas, and tuition centres. Residential educational institutions are excluded from the holiday.
In Pathanamthitta, owing to continued rain, all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, and tuition centres, will remain shut on Friday.
Palakkad District Collector declared a holiday for all institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, madrassas, and tuition centres. Residential schools and colleges are excluded.
In Kuttanad Taluk of Alappuzha district, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, and tuition centres, due to persistent rainfall and ongoing alerts. Pre-scheduled exams will proceed.

Salalah mourns former long-time resident Ranjitha Gopakumar, victim of Ahmedabad plane crash
MUSCAT: A deep sense of sorrow has gripped Salalah's Indian community as residents mourn the loss of Ranjitha Gopakumar, a former long-time resident of the city who was among the 241 victims killed in Thursday's tragic crash of a London-bound Air India Dreamliner shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. Ranjitha, a 38-year-old nurse from Kerala, had lived and worked in Salalah for nearly a decade before moving to the UK in search of better prospects. She had returned to India recently to complete formalities for renewing her job at a government hospital in Pathanamthitta, her hometown in Kerala. Dr Sandeep Ojha, General Secretary of the Indian Social Club (ISC) in Salalah, expressed the community's shock and grief. Speaking to Times of Oman, he said: "Ranjitha Gopakumar worked in Sultan Qaboos Hospital for around nine years and left Salalah about two years ago. At that time, her mother and two children were staying here with her. The children studied in Indian School Salalah. It is very tragic. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and to all families who lost their near and dear ones in the terrible tragedy in Ahmedabad on Thursday.' He added, 'There were quite a few families who remembered her as a soft-spoken and helpful lady. We are all devastated by the accident and mourn the loss of a long-time resident.' After relocating to the UK, Ranjitha had continued her career in nursing. According to media reports, she was in the process of collecting her release certificate from her hospital in the UK and had plans to settle back in Pathanamthitta with her two young children, who are currently with her mother. On the day of the crash, she was on a connecting journey from Chennai to Ahmedabad, intending to fly onward to London. Her dream of reuniting with her children in a new home she was building now lies shattered. The tragedy has not only left her family and friends in Kerala in mourning, but also touched many in Salalah who remember her warmth and dedication as a healthcare worker and community member. The crash has claimed the lives of 241 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national. Tributes have poured in from across the world, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who posted on X: 'We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words... Om Shanti.' Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who hails from Kerala, also shared his condolences on X (formerly known as Twitter), paying tribute to Ranjitha as one of the victims from Kozhencherry.

Indian Coast Guard working to combat fire on Singapore-flagged container ship
Kochi: The Indian Coast Guard is continuously working to combat the fire that engulfed the Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503. It said attempts were being made to control the vessel fire that injured several crew members. Of the 22 crew members, 18 were rescued by the Indian Navy, while four are still missing. According to the Indian Coast Guard, as of 5:00 PM on Tuesday, the flames on the container ship were reduced, as thick smoke continued to emanate. "Indian Coast Guard ships continue to fight the fire and attempt to bring the inferno on the container ship MV WAN HAI 503 under control off Kerala coast. Visible flames have reduced, and thick smoke continues to emanate as of 1700 hours today," the Indian Coast Guard said. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy in India spokesperson Yu Jing on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the Indian Navy and the Mumbai Coast Guard for their prompt and professional rescue of its crew members onboard the Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503, which encountered an onboard explosion and fire 44 nautical miles off Kerala's Azhikkal. According to Yu Jing, Chinese and Taiwanese crew members were among those onboard MV Wan Hai. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson wished for successful search operations and speedy recovery for injured crew members. "On June 9, MV Wan Hai 503 encountered onboard explosion and fire 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal, Kerala. Of the total 22 crew members on board, 14 are Chinese, including 6 from Taiwan. Our gratitude goes to the Indian Navy @indiannavy and the Mumbai Coast Guard for their prompt and professional rescue. We wish further search operations successful and the injured crew members speedy recovery," Yu Jing posted on X. Four crew members were reported missing and five injured after an explosion under deck was reported onboard MV WAN HAI 503 while it was on passage from Colombo to Nhava Sheva. Indian Coast Guard ships have been deployed for firefighting and rescue operations. According to the Indian Coast Guard, four crew members were reported missing following the explosion on Monday, and five others sustained injuries. The vessel was carrying containerised cargo and had a total crew of 22 onboard. CGDO on task was diverted for assessment. Of the 18 rescued crew members of the Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503, six were brought to the AJ Hospital for medical treatment post-midnight on Tuesday. Dinesh Kadam, Plastic Surgeon at AJ Hospital, said that two rescuees had critical injuries with 35 to 40 per cent burns. The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Surat, carrying the rescued crew members who sustained injuries in the vessel fire, had arrived at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), Panambur. According to Plastic Surgeon Kadam, the six rescuees are from multiple nationalities, including Chinese and Indonesian. Of the six rescued crew members, two have suffered critical injuries. "We have received six patients. All of them have burns. Three are Chinese nationals, two are from Burma (Myanmar), and one is from Indonesia. Two are critically injured with 35-40 per cent burns. Mainly, they have airway burns, that is, respiratory burns, which are much more severe. They have breathing problems. We have to monitor closely over a few days and see how they do. Right now, we're giving all the attention and critical care," Kadam told reporters here. According to the Indian Navy, the vessel carried 22 crew members, including eight Chinese, six Taiwanese, five Myanmarese, and three Indonesian nationals. Following the explosion and escalation of the fire, the crew abandoned the ship. The MV reported an internal container explosion and a major fire onboard. The vessel was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, and its expected arrival time (ETA) was June 10.
