Edinburgh is my favourite place anywhere in the world, but it's hard to ignore that during the summer months, the city can feel a bit too bustling and loud due to the International Festival. The array of performers, shows, and comedians can be entertaining, but if you're seeking a break from the hubbub, consider venturing to its stunning seaside.
Many Edinburgh visitors are oblivious to the fact that just on the city's outskirts lies Portobello, a quaint, historic coastal town that's part of the city. I'm absolutely smitten with Portobello for its awe-inspiring beach and unique independent shops, so I highly recommend it for anyone in search of a peaceful retreat from the chaotic city centre.
Portobello beach is renowned for its incredibly soft white sand, making it an ideal location for a picnic or simply unwinding with a good book by the sea. The best thing about it is how tranquil it is - as long as you don't go at the weekend.
From treasure hunts to photographers, yoga sessions or even beach clean-ups, the community is really active, creating a very close-knit and cosy atmosphere, reports the Express. It also boasts some stunning, gothic-style Victorian homes along the promenade, and there's a plethora of charming little cafés and restaurants to explore.
My absolute favourite dining spot at the beach is The Boathouse. It serves the most delicious pizzas I've ever tasted and is situated at the very end of the promenade, so it tends to be quiet.
However, Portobello is brimming with fantastic eateries, making it a must-visit for those seeking a quality dining experience without the city centre price tag. My absolute favourite pastime is to pop in for lunch at Greek Artisan Pastries, an adorable blue-and-white bakery that stands out on the main street. Their savoury pies are always a delight, served warm and fresh with such a wide variety that I'm always spoilt for choice.
Tanifiki, one of the friendliest coffee shops I've ever visited, is renowned for its African coffee blends. The owner is a gem, but the entire team are consistently pleasant and incredibly helpful every time I drop by.
With an array of sweet baked goods and luxurious coffee on offer, Tanifiki is a place I simply can't resist. On my last visit, I indulged in a sea salt brownie, but their scones are also a personal favourite and come highly recommended.
For a tipple, head over to the Foresters, which boasts a cosy beer garden and scrumptious pub grub. Their fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding are the best I've ever had, warranting a visit every few months just to relive the experience.
Edinburgh is famed for its vast array of bookshops, but if you're a bibliophile, The Portobello Bookshop is a must-visit. This independent bookstore offers some of the best picks hand-selected by staff members, ensuring I always discover something unique to read when I stop by. They also boast a fantastic range of independent books and magazines, sparking interest in subjects you may never have considered before.
Portobello is an extraordinary location brimming with independent shops that are worth a visit, and I've barely begun to uncover the hidden gems of this underappreciated coastal town.
Portobello is just a 20-minute car journey from Edinburgh city centre, or approximately a 35-minute bus ride. It's about an hour's walk, but if you're unfamiliar with the area, it's advisable to take public transport or a taxi.

The isle has everything for a family summer getaway. After a wet start to June, it finally feels like summer is beginning in Scotland. With high temperatures forecast across the country over the coming days, many Scots will be wondering how to make the most of it. When it comes to choosing a day-trip or staycation spot, everybody will have their own preferences. While some prefer easy access to scenic hikes and unique beauty spots, all others want is a friendly pub with a beer garden to soak up some sun. One destination that offers both, and more, is the Isle of Bute. Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island can be easily reached from Glasgow. Likely your first destination when arriving on Bute will be Rothesay. The main settlement on the island, it has a population of around 4,300 people. The Victorian seaside resort is home to amazing attractions such as Rothesay Castle and the Bute Museum. The former dates back to the 13th century and is famed for its association with the Stewart kings of Scotland, while the Bute Museum is the place to learn more about the incredible natural history of the island. For those looking to get a drink in the sun, one of the top pubs in Rothesay is The Galatea Bar. The venue serves up a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits, ciders, and soft drinks. According to The Galatea Bar Facebook page, the pub features a "sun trap beer garden". There are numerous benches where patrons can enjoy an outdoor drink, while there are also parasols if an unexpected rain shower hits. At the moment, the pub has an average rating of 4.6 out of five on Google based on 217 reviews. Past customers have described it as "stylish and friendly" and "lovely". Rothesay is also home to a number of cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy a tasty sit-down meal. Zavaroni's Cafe is a good spot for a light bite or lunch, while The Jam Jar serves up classic dishes such as burgers and fish and chips. Outside of Rothesay, Bute offers a variety of picturesque sandy beaches. Among the most well-known and popular is Ettrick Bay. Situated on the island's northwest coast, Ettrick Bay is comprised of a one-mile-long stretch of golden sand that benefits from sensational views out across to Dunoon and the Isle of Arran. Featuring car parking, toilets, picnic areas, and even a kids' play area, according to Wild About Argyll, it is a great spot for a paddle with the family. Another beautiful beach on Bute is St. Ninian's Bay, which is known for its white cockle shells. Usually quieter than the more popular Ettrick Bay, it is a good choice for those after a picturesque walk or a bit of birdwatching. Other things to see on the Isle of Bute include Mount Stuart and St Blane's Chapel. Mount Stuart features around 300 acres of gardens with amazing plant collections to explore, while St Blane's Chapel consists of the well-preserved ruins of a church dating back hundreds of years. If you are interested in heading to Bute for a staycation this summer, the island can be reached via ferry. There are regular services between Rothesay and Wemyss Bay, which has a rail link to Glasgow. Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away, has spent years monitoring the fluctuating pricing tactics of airlines and hotels, and has some useful advice on saving some cash. It's all about the timing. While you might think booking as far in advance as possible, this actually isn't usually the best approach, says Dawn. "I've seen people book flights 10 months early thinking they've got a bargain, only to watch the same route drop by £200 per person just weeks before departure," she said. "Airlines use dynamic pricing, which means they're constantly adjusting based on demand predictions." But likewise, waiting until the last minute to arrange your holiday can be just as detrimental, with the likelihood of snagging a late deal becoming slimmer, reports the Express. "The days of rocking up to the airport and getting a massive discount are largely gone," said Dawn. "What you're more likely to find are inflated prices, limited availability, and having to compromise on everything from departure times to accommodation quality." For long-haul journeys, it's best to secure your holiday booking eight to 12 weeks in advance. Article continues below However, these guidelines vary with the seasons. Those planning a summer getaway are advised to book their short-haul European trips 10 to 12 weeks ahead of time. "But for a city break in February, you can often get away with booking just four to six weeks ahead and still secure excellent deals," Dawn added. The most attractive deals are typically found when there's some flexibility around departure dates, airports, and even destinations. "Tuesday and Wednesday departures are almost always cheaper than weekend flights," Dawn said. "And flying from alternative airports can cut costs dramatically."
