Paige Bueckers' Blunt Response to Immediate Problem in WNBA Rookie Season

Yahoo20-05-2025

On Monday, the Dallas Wings dropped their second straight game, falling 79-71 at home to the Seattle Storm.
Rookie guard Paige Bueckers led Dallas with 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds, improving markedly on her debut line of 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists in a season-opening loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

Yet, the Wings shot a woeful 4-for-19 from three and were repeatedly burned by Skylar Diggins, Gabby Williams and Nneka Ogwumike, who combined for 61 points.
After the final buzzer, a reporter noted that defenses have been sending double teams at Bueckers "on nearly every possession" and asked how she planned to respond.
"I mean it's probably smart just to get the ball out of my hands, and just trying to... adjust offensively on how to counteract a trap... and maybe less ball screens and screening," Bueckers said. "But it's just something a different look that defenses are throwing at me, which is an adjustment. And so just continue to learn and work through that."
Bueckers concluded a decorated five-year career at UConn this spring as the nation's premier college player.

She led the Huskies to the 2025 NCAA title, earning all of the sport's top honors in her senior year: the Honda Sports Award, Wade Trophy, and AP Player of the Year, among others.
A three-time unanimous first-team All-American (2021, 2024, 2025) and two-time Nancy Lieberman Award winner, Bueckers posted a career scoring average of 19.9 points per game, the highest in UConn history.

The Wings selected her with the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft in April.
At 0-2, they now face a true test of resilience when Bueckers returns to Minnesota on Wednesday for her 'homecoming' versus the Lynx.

Caitlin Clark's Teammate Sends Official 'Warning' To WNBA Referees

Caitlin Clark's Teammate Sends Official 'Warning' To WNBA Referees originally appeared on The Spun. Caitlin Clark's teammate sent an official "warning" to the WNBA's referees. Advertisement The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft has been on the receiving end of some very physical defense since coming into the league. Clark, who stars for the Indiana Fever, was involved in a heated incident against the Connecticut Sun. Clark was hit in the eye by Sun guard Jacy Sheldon and then knocked to the ground by one of Sheldon's teammates. Later in the game, Sheldon was knocked to the ground by Sophie Cunningham, who has become Clark's enforcer. Cunningham is blaming the WNBA's referees. Advertisement "During that, it was just part of the game," Cunningham said postgame. "I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build-up for a couple years now of them just not, not protecting the star player of the WNBA. And so at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do, and I'm a team player." On Saturday, ahead of the Indiana Fever vs. Las Vegas Aces game, Cunningham made it clear that if the WNBA's referees won't take control of the situation, she will. "I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was built up for a couple years now, just not protecting the star player of WNBA," she said. Cunningham probably isn't wrong to at least partially blame the WNBA's referees for letting things escalate to the level that it did. With this win, the Aces extend their streak to 5-0 against the Fever since last season. They'll meet again twice in Indianapolis later this season. Fans Were Excited To See Caitlin Clark The Blast | Melanie VanDerveer Well before the game began, fans started lining up outside the arena, hoping to get the chance to see Clark entering the arena. When the bus pulled up, fans began sprinting toward it, holding jerseys, photos, and other things in the hopes of getting Clark's signature. But then the bus turned around and drove the other way, so disappointed fans turned back around and got in line to enter the building. Advertisement Inside during warmups, it was a similar scene. Fans lined up along the lower section behind the bench holding various items for Clark to sign. After warmups, Clark went over to the crowd and happily greeted fans, signing autographs as fast as she could to get through the crowd of people. Caitlin Clark Talked Highly Of A'ja Wilson During Pregame Press Conference The Blast | Melanie VanDerveer During a pregame conference, Clark greeted the media and took questions. When someone asked about a comparison to how Clark plays to how Wilson plays, Clark said, "I would say we're quite different players, so that's tough." Advertisement "I mean, I think she just plays with an energy and tenacity about her that really affects her team and that's probably as a competitor what I appreciate the most," Clark said about Wilson. "When she's on the floor, it's completely different. She affects the games in so many ways, offensively and defensively, and I think that's what's incredible about the way she plays. It's the energy, she plays fast, she can dribble, she can shoot, she can attack the glass, there's so many different ways that she continues to affect the game. I think that and just the competitive spirit she brings for her team." Clark also talked about Sunday night's NBA Finals game 7 against the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder. She's hoping to get to watch it. "I think we're gonna be in the air. We fly Delta and sometimes they have the screens on the back, but sometimes they don't," she said. "I'm hoping for the ones with the screens on the back of the chairs so I don't have to pay for the WiFi. I'm a little cheap. I'm super excited. I feel good about it. I thought they were tremendous in game 6 and now it's a winners take all kind of game. No matter which way it goes tonight, the type of season they've had has been absolutely incredible and you have to appreciate that. Super fortunate that I get to be in Indianapolis at this time and we're gonna be cheering for them really hard." Aces Star A'ja Wilson Talked About What It Took To Overcome A Tough Start The Blast | Melanie VanDerveer During the postgame press conference, Wilson talked about what it took to shift from a rough start to the game to winning. Advertisement "My teammates. That's really the simple answer," Wilson said about overcoming the start. "They continue to trust me; they continue to lean on me. I'm not gonna be perfect. Nobody's gonna be perfect. I'm not gonna always be whatever people want me to be." Chelsea Gray, who finished the game with 18 points, was also in the postgame conference and shared her thoughts on playing to a sold-out crowd at T-Mobile. "I think we were on the bench, it was me, Jackie, and A'ja, we looked around and was like wow, this is dope," she said. "Shout out to our marketing team and people that thought of the idea to have everybody have their towels and here at T-Mobile and everybody coming out."
