Bob Myers shattered Stephen A. Smith's tiresome gimmick before Game 7
It's been a rough NBA Finals when it comes to whatever smoldering mess is now left of Stephen A. Smith's reputation.
First, Smith was caught playing Solitaire during the pivotal fourth quarter of the Oklahoma City Thunder's win in Game 4. Smith responded to the controversy by laughing it off and saying he's capable of multitasking while still watching games he's ostensibly paid to pay attention to for ESPN. That, of course, was an obvious lie.

With only the fourth NBA Finals Game 7 this century on tap for Sunday night, hoops fans were begging the famously brash and loud Smith to do a more responsible job of setting the stage for what should hopefully be an epic evening in Oklahoma City. They wanted him to respect the magnitude of the game more, rather than making his coverage as part of ESPN's in-game studio panel all about himself, like he always does.
Unsurprisingly, Smith did not oblige.
Early on ESPN's broadcast, what should've been a simple conversation about an over/under for Chet Holmgren's final Game 7 point total devolved into Smith totally veering off track so he could yell about his frustrations with Kendrick Perkins' analysis (which is normally a fair criticism, to be clear). That's right, dearest readers. Smith turned pregame coverage of a potentially legendary Game 7 into a manufactured First Take debate segment. His shamelessness boggles the mind.

During Smith's aimless (and needless) rant, you could actually see former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers growing frustrated when the camera panned over to his face. And after Smith finished bloviating about nothing, Myers said what we've been thinking about him for quite some time.
You don't have to yell to make your points. You just don't:
If ESPN has any self-respect about its live NBA coverage remaining, it's clear that this studio show needs to be blown up before the next NBA season begins. I'm talking torn down to the studs. I'll hold off on salting the earth because I think it could still be redeemed with enough earnest effort and creativity.

Anything else, and we risk further exposing ourselves to the Stephen A. Smith Show, er, I mean, the winner-take-all championship game.

Rebuilding Pac-12 reaches deal with CBS for its football and men's basketball games
The Pac-12 struck a media-rights deal with CBS on Monday that sets up the network to broadcast a minimum of four football and men's basketball games per season on its main network and provide a cable and streaming presence for the reconfigured league from 2026-31. Financial details of the new deal were not disclosed. Conference Commissioner Teresa Gould called it a 'transformational partnership' that allows the Pac-12 to grow when it starts as a remodeled league in 2026-27. An inability to secure a media deal is what nearly cratered the league in 2023, with all but Oregon State and Washington State departing for the Big 12, Atlantic Coast and Big Ten Conferences. The Pac-12 already had deals in place to put all of the two remaining teams' football games on the CW, ESPN and CBS for the upcoming season. The new deal with what the league calls its 'primary long-term media partner' kicks in the next season, when Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Utah State and San Diego State will join the Pac-12 in all sports, with Gonzaga joining in everything but football. The Pac-12 needs to add another football program to reach the minimum eight teams necessary to be in the Football Bowl Subdivision and, thus, the College Football Playoff. Multiple reports say Texas State has emerged as the top candidate. Under the new deal, CBS will broadcast at least three regular-season football and men's basketball games per season, along with the championship games for both sports. The league also will have what it called a 'consistent regular-season presence' on the cable CBS Sports Network. Baker's March Madness Expansion Plans Face Limits of TV Marketplace
NCAA president Charlie Baker on Thursday said his team has begun discussions with CBS Sports and Warner Bros. Discovery regarding a possible expansion of the March Madness men's basketball bracket from 68 to as many as 76 teams, with an eye toward bulking up the tourney next year. 'We've had good conversations with CBS and WBD,' Baker told a scrum of reporters gathered at the Big 12 spring meetings in Orlando. 'Our goal here is to try to sort of either get to 'yes' or 'no' sometime in the next few months, because there's a lot of logistical work that would be associated with doing this, if we were to go down this road.' Baker said that the goal is to upsize the men's field to either 72 or 76 teams, though he acknowledged the logistics could be daunting. 'I mean, just think about the opening weekend … the travel alone is complicated,' he said. Baker hopes to come to terms on an expansion within the next few weeks, or 'sometime early [this] summer.' One of the factors that makes the idea of beefing up the brackets so attractive to the NCAA—besides the bonus $$$—is the practice of awarding automatic bids to the teams that win their conference tournaments. As Baker noted, under the current system, 31 of the 68 teams that are selected each year are locks regardless of 'where they were ranked during the regular season.' As such, 'you're going to have a bunch of teams that are probably among what most people consider to be among the best … that aren't going to make the tournament, period.' As it happens, this spring's tourney was characterized by a glaring absence of Cinderella teams, as this marked the first time since 2007 that not a single program seeded 11th or lower managed to push its way through to the Sweet 16. (The West's No. 10 seed Arkansas was the worst-ranked third-round seed on the road to what would turn out to be a Final Four slate composed entirely of No. 1 seeds.) In Baker's estimation, 'a whole bunch of teams who win their conference tournaments' are not cut from the same cloth as many top-shelf teams that are shut out of the Madness by the automatic qualifiers. 'So, the point behind going from 68 to 72 or 76 is to basically give some of those schools that probably were among the … best teams in the country a way into the tournament,' he said. As much as CBS and WBD would likely jump at the chance to carry a few additional basketball games in March, the prospect of the NCAA trying to separate its media partners from a bit more cash is dicey at best. The two network groups already pay an arm and a leg for the rights to carry the tourney, having extended their contract with the NCAA in March 2016 in a deal valued at $8.8 billion. According to NCAA financial documents, CBS and WBD are on the hook for $995 million in rights fees during the 2025 fiscal year alone. 'The way I think about it is, it's a way to get some of the teams into the tournament who would, as at-large teams, get in,' Baker said, before reiterating that the NCAA has no intention of doing away with the automatic bids. 'We really believe in the AQ process and the opportunities that creates for everybody to have a stake in the tournaments.' The men's tournament expanded from 64 to 68 teams in 2011, with a similar glow up for the women's bracket coming on the heels of the 2020-21 season.
