JI to resume nationwide protest on January 31
KARACHI:
Months after striking an agreement with the government on public demands and pledging to keep an eagle eye on its promises, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced the resumption of its nationwide protests.
JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman revealed the decision during a news conference held at Idara Noor-e-Haq, JI's Karachi headquarters, on Sunday. He said that the protest campaign, beginning on January 31, will focus on a single-point agenda of providing relief to the masses, particularly by reducing electricity bills.
He said that ironically the successive ruling regimes in the country, with opposite ideologies and agendas, always shun their differences when it comes to their own monetary interests or supporting mafias in the country.
He elaborated that the heavy, exuberant vertical rises in salaries of parliamentarians as well as the issue of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are evident in it.
He added that the wheat mafia and sugar mafia were sheltered in the recent past, whereas a crisis is looming large over the cotton sector as once against the mafias in the sector is being sheltered.
Focusing on the IPPs, he said that the sector was always showered with blessings and IPPs were given Rs1 trillion relief in taxes.
The JI emir asserted that JI's campaign compelled the government to renegotiate contracts with IPPs, yet the public had not benefited. "The nation wants to know where the impact is," he said, emphasizing the need to pass on these benefits to the people.
He stressed that the government should have transferred the benefits of the cancelled and reviewed Independent Power Producers (IPP) contracts to the public. "Since the government has shown no interest in doing so, the JI will intensify its agitation campaign with greater force and determination."
He asserted that the government must reduce electricity prices and revise its policies to prioritize the welfare of the underprivileged.
He demanded the government reduce electricity bills, end excessive taxation, reduce the petroleum levy, end perks for the privileged class, and relief for the salaried class.
He urged the nation to join the JI's campaign instead of waiting for their turn to receive a fatal blow by the governmental policies.
On the occasion, Naeemur Rehman strongly condemned all those political parties who voted for a 140 per cent rise in the salaries of parliamentarians.
He highlighted that the rise was okayed at a time when 40 per cent of the country's population was living under the line of poverty.
Addressing the PECA ordinance, he slammed the legislation, saying that while JI does not condone fake news or incitement against Pakistan or Islam, political dissent should not be suppressed under authoritarian pretexts. He expressed solidarity with the media, questioning the government's intent in bypassing consensus to impose the ordinance.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's Advisor on Information Barrister Dr Saif has said that the provincial budget will not be approved without consultation with Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan. He noted that people voted for the vision of the Patron-in-Chief therefore all key decisions, including the budget, should reflect the public mandate. He accused the federal government of relentlessly trying to undermine the K-P government, adding that the people of the province were being punished for supporting the Patron-in-Chief. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is a vital unit of the federation, and weakening it is tantamount to weakening Pakistan itself," said Saif. He warned that any conspiracy against the province would have serious repercussions. Under the vision of the Patron-in-Chief and the leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the province is witnessing rapid development, which is hard to digest by the federal government. He termed K-P a stronghold of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), adding the movement for the release of the Patron-in-Chief will gain full momentum from the province. He alleged that false cases had been registered to confine the Patron-in-Chief, but assured that all such fabricated cases would soon be dismissed.

JI demands fair share for Karachi in provincial budget
KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi staged a large protest march on Saturday, demanding a fair share for Karachi in the provincial budget, early completion of the K-4 water supply project, and an end to what it called chronic injustices against the city. The rally, which began from Khizra Masjid and ended at the Sindh Assembly building, saw participation from people across the city. Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans criticizing the Sindh government and its allies for ignoring Karachi's basic needs. Addressing the crowd, JI Karachi Chief Munem Zafar Khan accused the ruling PPP and MQM of presenting an 'anti-Karachi' budget and sidelining the city in development planning. He said Karachi suffers from a worsening water crisis, crumbling infrastructure, lack of public transport, and power outages. 'Karachi contributes the most to the national and provincial economy but gets nothing in return,' Munem Zafar said, demanding at least Rs500 billion to address the city's pressing issues. He stressed the need for 10,000 buses and the revival of the Karachi Circular Railway to ease public transport problems. He criticized the under funding of the K-4 water project, saying only Rs3.2 billion was allocated against a Wapda requirement of Rs40 billion. 'Karachi paid Rs3,000 billion in taxes, but the government can't spare Rs40 billion for water?' he questioned. Munem Zafar also condemned what he called 'rigged' elections and political manipulation in the mayoral race, blaming both PPP and MQM as 'products of Form 47' — a reference to election results he claimed was tampered with. Highlighting stalled infrastructure projects, he pointed to delays and rising costs in the Red Line BRT and KDA underpass schemes, saying they had caused both human and financial losses. He also slammed recent traffic and transport policies, including the ban on four-seater rickshaws and higher penalties for motorbike riders, calling them 'illogical and unfair.' PPP delegation meets Fazl
