CalMac directly awarded new ferry service contract
The contract to run Scotland's west coast ferry services in future has been directly awarded to the existing publicly-owned operator CalMac Ferries Ltd.
The Scottish government said the service would now be focused on a "public service model" instead of being run on a commercial basis.
The contract for the Clyde and Hebridean Ferry Service (CHFS) had been due to expire last September but was extended by a year.
Ministers had indicated that a direct award was their preference, but they needed more time to ensure this could be done without a legal challenge.
CalMac is the UK's biggest ferry operator and has held the most recent contract to run Scotland's west coast routes since 2016, serving 50 destinations.
But the firm has struggled in recent years to maintain services with an ageing and increasingly unreliable fleet.
Since 2007 the ships and some of the harbours it relies on have been owned by a separate government-owned company, Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd or CMAL in a move designed to comply with EU competition rules.
Delays in replacing the older vessels, in part due to the problems with two new dual-fuel ferries ordered a decade ago, have stretched the service almost to breaking point, with many vessels beyond their expected service life.

New Edinburgh bakery opens on former site of popular business in capital
New Edinburgh bakery opens on former site of popular business in capital A new bakery has launched on Leith Walk, replacing a popular business that shut its doors less than a month ago. Sloe Lane Bakery opened on Saturday, June 21, replacing Hobz Bakery, which closed weeks before on May 31. Some of the team from Hobz has stayed on to work at Sloe Lane which is now up and running in the same premises. READ MORE: Tragedy as body of man is discovered in shed beside busy Edinburgh road READ MORE: Edinburgh woman and baby rushed to hospital as man arrested by 'armed police' Bosses at the new bakery took to social media to wish the previous eatery staff farewell and to announce the launch of the new cafe. ADVERTISEMENT They said: "[Hobz] will be greatly missed, and we wish them every success and happiness in their next chapter. "They created something truly special and we hope to carry that spirit forward. We're lucky to have some of their wonderful team staying on with us - so please do pop by and say hello! "We'll be serving exceptional coffee and freshly baked pastries, made with care and intention. At Sloe Lane, we believe in baking with love, taking our time, and celebrating the best of Scotland's seasonal and local ingredients and suppliers. "Our name reflects our wish to create a place where people can slow down - inspired by the gentle rhythm of Leith Walk and the sloe berry, a symbol of our connection to nature." ADVERTISEMENT Hobz Bakery closed on Saturday, May 31, with plans to reopen at a new location in the East Neuk of Fife next year. Owner, Matt, shared the news with his customers on Instagram at the time. He said: "Hobz has been too successful, too fast. When I started baking from my flat in 2021, Hobz was only a weekly side project. It quickly grew into the bakery it is today. "In all honesty, I never imagined Hobz would be where it is now. We've been listed in many publications as one of the best bakeries in the UK, among other bakeries that I look up to and admire, even though I have trouble accepting anything we make is any good. "About a year ago I realised that we needed to expand, and began to look for a larger unit in Edinburgh."

ACCA proposes decennial review of charity financial thresholds
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has proposed that the UK Government should undertake a review of the financial thresholds for charities every ten years. This recommendation was put forward in response to a consultation by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), concerning the financial criteria that dictate various reporting and auditing requirements for charities. ACCA has advocated for the establishment of common thresholds across multiple regulatory matters to reduce complexity and enhance clarity for charities. The association has stressed the efforts to reduce administrative requirements for smaller organisations are important, they must be balanced with the need to maintain effective governance and oversight of the charitable sector. Inflation and changes in the economic landscape have rendered the current thresholds, unchanged since 2015, outdated. ACCA suggests that the gross annual income threshold for mandatory audits should be raised from £1m to £1.5m to reflect these changes. The body also calls for a coordinated approach to setting financial thresholds across the UK, urging DCMS to engage in dialogue with authorities in Northern Ireland and Scotland. This is aimed at exchange of best practices in the charity sector, ACCA said. In Scotland, the proposed increase of the audit threshold from £500,000 to £1m follows a government consultation, aligning it more closely with the threshold in England and Wales, which ACCA suggests should be increased further to £1.5m. The current variance between the jurisdictions means that smaller Scottish charities allocate a higher proportion of their income to audit expenses compared to larger charities. ACCA technical and strategic engagement head Glenn Collins said: 'It is important that financial thresholds are proportionate for smaller charities. A periodic, systematic review is essential to ensure the regulatory environment evolves with the sector. Our recommendations aim to balance accountability and fairness, freeing up vital resources to function.' Earlier in June 2025, ACCA urged the European Commission to streamline the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and reduce its reporting requirements. "ACCA proposes decennial review of charity financial thresholds " was originally created and published by The Accountant, a GlobalData owned brand.
