Bahrain Celebrates Eye Surgical Breakthrough
TDT | Manama
A cutting-edge eye surgery has opened a new chapter in Bahrain's medical history, with the successful implantation of the country's first Preserflo MicroShunt, a device transforming the treatment of glaucoma.
The milestone procedure was performed by Dr. Ahmed AlMeer, a Bahraini eye surgeon who recently returned from Canada after completing advanced training.
Conducted at Dr. Haifa Eye Hospital, the surgery marks Bahrain's entry into a global shift towards safer and less invasive glaucoma treatments.
Dr. AlMeer said he felt confident as he held the tiny Preserflo device in his hands, aware of the significance of the moment.
'I had already performed this surgery many times abroad, so I felt well-prepared. What I felt more than pressure was a deep sense of responsibility,' he said.
Glaucoma, a chronic eye disease that can lead to irreversible blindness, is traditionally treated with trabeculectomy, a procedure that involves creating a larger drainage opening in the eye.
This method often results in longer recovery times and increased risk of complications.
The Preserflo MicroShunt, however, is a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device just 8.5 mm in length.
It creates a controlled outflow for fluid, reducing intraocular pressure with minimal disruption to the eye's anatomy.
According to Dr. AlMeer, this translates to quicker healing, fewer complications, and better comfort for patients.

Bahrain reinforces strategy for security and stability
Bahrain lost one of its most respected and beloved philanthropic figures today, Wednesday, June 18, with the passing of Mrs. Safiya Ali Mohammed Kanoo — a woman whose life was defined by selfless service, community support, and cultural enrichment. Throughout her decades-long journey, Mrs. Safiya Kanoo was a cornerstone of Bahrain's social and economic landscape. She was a leading supporter of community development, women's empowerment, and the country's cultural and artistic scene. Her legacy includes countless initiatives that improved the lives of children with cancer, the elderly, and underprivileged families across the Kingdom. One of her lasting contributions is the Safiya Ali Kanoo Pediatric Ward at Salmaniya Medical Complex, along with two elderly care units, mosques, and the Safiya Ali Kanoo Center for Arts and Handicrafts, which continues to nurture creativity and preserve Bahraini heritage. In the economic sphere, she championed small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those led by women. Through training programs and artistic exhibitions, she played a vital role in empowering local artisans, families, and female entrepreneurs to pursue sustainable, creative livelihoods. Mrs. Kanoo was also a devoted supporter of the Bahrain Businesswomen's Society and actively helped organize events that elevated women's participation in business and culture. Her impact did not go unnoticed by the nation's leadership. In recognition of her exceptional contributions, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa awarded her the First-Class Medal of Competence not once, but twice — in 2001 and again in 2012. The passing of Safiya Kanoo is a profound loss for Bahrain. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and visionary leadership. Her memory will live on in the lives she touched and the institutions she helped build — a true national icon of generosity and progress.

Bahrain Mourns the Passing of Safia Ali Kanoo
Bahrain has lost one of its most dedicated humanitarians with the passing of Safia Ali Muhammad Kanoo on Wednesday, June 18. A towering figure in Bahrain's social and economic landscape, she leaves behind a legacy of transformative philanthropy, women's empowerment, and cultural enrichment. For decades, Ms Kanoo championed initiatives that uplifted vulnerable communities, most notably through healthcare. She established the Safia Ali Kanoo Paediatric Ward at Salmaniya Medical Complex, providing critical care for children battling cancer, and founded two specialised wards for elderly care. Her contributions extended beyond medicine—she built mosques, supported art centres like the Safia Ali Kanoo Centre for Arts and Crafts, and empowered Bahraini women through entrepreneurship programs and exhibitions. A steadfast advocate for female leadership, she was a pillar of the Bahraini Businesswomen Association, creating and nurturing opportunities for women in business and culture. Her visionary work earned her the prestigious First-Class Medal of Competence from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa—twice, in 2001 and 2012—a testament to her national impact. Bahrain today grieves not just a philanthropist, but a trailblazer whose life redefined service. From children's hospitals to artisan workshops, her legacy lives on in every life she touched. As the Kingdom bids farewell to this icon of generosity, her spirit endures in the institutions she built and the countless futures she brightened. May her soul rest in peace.
