Kansas State Football Preview 2025: Wildcats Due for a College Football Playoff Run
As a program, Kansas State is way overdue to be in the College Football Playoff.Chris Klieman has been terrific since taking over in 2019. The Wildcats went 5-7 in 2018, the new guy came in, and - let's throw out 2020; it was a weird time - he's pulling off winning seasons, won three bowls in the last four years, and …This year, Kansas State should be good enough to earn its way into the CFP.
X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFNKansas State Offense BreakdownKansas State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonIt was close. It started last season 7-1, had relatively easy games against Houston and Cincinnati, two battles against Arizona State and Iowa State, and it would've been in had it closed 3-1. But it went 1-3.The 2022 team would've been in an expanded CFP, thanks to beating TCU for the Big 12 title, but that's back in the old days of the four-team version. Instead, the Wildcats went to the Sugar Bowl and got walloped by Alabama.
The 2012 team would've made a 12-team College Football Playoff. The 2011 team would've been in the discussion, and if you want to go old school, Kansas State would've at least been really, really close to ten CFPs between 1993 to 2003 if the current format had been in place. It'll be hard for every Big 12 team to make it through the schedule without some bumps. It's not like getting through the SEC or Big Ten, but there isn't a week off in the Big 12 season. It's not impossible, though, for a team that should be as good as 2025 Kansas State.
Klieman has built up the team over the last six years. It's consistently good, and now in the portal era, he and his staff have been able to fill in the gaps with the right guys who should instantly fit.Kansas State is one of the best programs that haven't enjoyed the playoff spotlight. That might change very, very soon. Kansas State Offense BreakdownKansas State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman discusses what went wrong vs. Ohio State with Joel Klatt
We all remember it all too well after the Ohio State football team went on a historic run through the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff to win the national championship last season. It was one for the ages, one in which the Buckeyes beat No. 9 Tennessee, No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Texas, and then No. 7 Notre Dame to unleash the confetti, trophies, and celebrations. However, for every victor, there is a loser, and in the case of Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach and former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman, the loss to the Buckeyes still stings. Freeman sat down with Fox's Joel Klatt for a wide-ranging interview, and it wouldn't have been complete without re-visiting what happened in Atlanta between the Scarlet and Gray and "Golden Domers." Klatt asked Freeman to go back and think about what he learned from a game in which Ohio State jetted out to a big lead, saw the Irish battle back to within eight points in the fourth quarter, only to see the Buckeyes make plays down the stretch to win rather comfortably. For Freeman, he wishes his team could have played a little better, all while still giving credit to Ohio State. 'I think in those biggest games, those biggest moments, you've got to play your best. You can't make mistakes -- not against a team like Ohio State,' Freeman said. 'You think about the first drive on offense, I think it was a 19-play drive, we execute, we're physical, we go down, we score. Defensively, we didn't play our best, and trust me, credit to Ohio State. They had some elite playmakers. They played really, really well.' As an ultra competitor, you never want to believe a team is better than you, or created some of the mishaps and uncharacteristic play, and that's exactly how Freeman felt. "I wish we could go back and, dang it, we got to play our best, and the outcome might still be the same, but there were moments in that game I thought that's not how we have played all year long,' Freeman said. 'For me, I think about that game and I say, OK, listen, we fought to the very end, right? You're down 21, I think, at half – or something like that, 14 or 21, and it was an eight-point game in the fourth quarter." As for what Freeman learned, he said that he began dissecting that almost immediately and has already made some changes and filed some things away that he would do differently if presented with the opportunity again. 'And it's something I will always remember, we made some changes already after we debriefed from that game. And hey, if we're in that situation, here are some different things we'll do as we prepare for it," Freeman said. "But at the end of the day, you've got to play your best when you're playing the best." Look, there are good coaches and good guys in this game, and I'm not sure many are better than Freeman. He has the Irish on the upswing, and I for one won't be surprised if he does indeed get another shot at the ultimate prize in college football, and he might just bring the thing home next time. I just hope it isn't against his alma mater once again. New 49ers linebacker shows tremendous grit after suffering injury in workout
The San Francisco 49ers lost two key contributors in their linebacker room this offseason, with Dre Greenlaw landing with the Denver Broncos and De'Vondre Campbell remaining unsigned on the free-agent market months into the new league year. Knowing that, San Francisco added two veteran linebackers, Luke Gifford and Chazz Surratt, in free agency, but they also used their third-round pick on Oklahoma State's Nick Martin. Martin, 22, entered the team's offseason program with a legitimate shot to contend for a starting job alongside Fred Warner, and those in attendance have said that he looks solid in practices open to the media. However, it was revealed on Thursday that Martin suffered a broken thumb in an offseason workout a few weeks ago. Since then, Martin has shown some impressive grit, as he hasn't missed a practice or workout. The San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado also reported that he won't need surgery and is expected to be fully healthy for the start of training camp next month. Martin was a three-star recruit out of Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas, before he joined the Oklahoma State program for the 2021 season. In his four years with the Cowboys, he appeared in 35 games and recorded 203 tackles (24 for a loss), seven sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. He also earned first-team All-Big 12 honors once (2023). Earlier this offseason, 49ers director of player personnel Tariq Ahmed talked up Martin's communication skills and stated that he could wear the green dot if four-time All-Pro Fred Warner, who has been exceptionally durable in his career, was forced to miss time due to injury. At this point, 2023 sixth-round pick Dee Winters is slated as the other starting linebacker next to Warner, but if Martin is fully healthy and performs well in camp, that job very well could be his in the season opener. Syracuse Football Preview 2025: Can Fran Brown Sustain the Orange Success?
Syracuse fans have been teased a bit over the last few years, especially the ones who remember a time when the program was a Big East powerhouse. And yes, there was a time in the late 1980s when Syracuse was in the national championship discussion - Don McPherson is still one of my favorite college quarterbacks ever. But that was a long, long time now the Orange fans got to have a whole lot of fun last year under head coach Fran Brown. So, can Syracuse win on a regular basis, or was that just a one-off? X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 Syracuse PreviewSyracuse Offense BreakdownSyracuse Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season It's been a while since the football program - and the basketball team, for that matter - was a major player. Take out newbies Stanford and Cal, and Syracuse joins NC State as the only ACC schools to not play in the conference championship since it started in doesn't mean the Orange haven't been good at times, but to put head coach Fran Brown's first season into perspective, it was just the second campaign since 2012 that finished with more than seven wins. Worse yet, even with the 10-3 season, Syracuse is just 76-85 since joining the ACC in 2013. Syracuse had to battle through two years of rebuilding under Dino Babers to get the everything-went-right 10-3 season of 2018. And then he had three straight losing seasons, rallied in 2022, and it was over in 2023. He always seemed to have the Orange just this close to turning it into something big, and he couldn't do stepped in and set the bar high from the start. Not only did he provide an instant jolt to the win column, but he made Syracuse one of the most fun teams in college football. There was a wild Holiday Bowl win, the passing game was the best in the country, and the team had the honor of screwing up Miami's season in one of the most important games of the College Football Playoff high-powered offense isn't going anywhere, the transfers are coming in late, and ...Syracuse will need a few breaks this time around. Nine of the 13 games last season were decided by one score, and that was with as light an ACC slate as reasonably possible. This year, swap out Ohio with Tennessee to open the season. Take out a trip to UNLV and add a date at Notre no trip to Cal, but there's a date at Clemson. There's no game against Stanford, but there's a road trip to SMU. And this time around, the Miami game is in Hard be prepared. Syracuse probably won't have as good a season, but it won't necessarily mean it'll be a step Brown appears to be a keeper who'll make winning a regular thing. But he has to keep it all going on … Syracuse Offense BreakdownSyracuse Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. All rights reserved.
