New 49ers linebacker shows tremendous grit after suffering injury in workout

USA Today4 hours ago

The San Francisco 49ers lost two key contributors in their linebacker room this offseason, with Dre Greenlaw landing with the Denver Broncos and De'Vondre Campbell remaining unsigned on the free-agent market months into the new league year.
Knowing that, San Francisco added two veteran linebackers, Luke Gifford and Chazz Surratt, in free agency, but they also used their third-round pick on Oklahoma State's Nick Martin.
Martin, 22, entered the team's offseason program with a legitimate shot to contend for a starting job alongside Fred Warner, and those in attendance have said that he looks solid in practices open to the media.
However, it was revealed on Thursday that Martin suffered a broken thumb in an offseason workout a few weeks ago. Since then, Martin has shown some impressive grit, as he hasn't missed a practice or workout. The San Francisco Chronicle's Noah Furtado also reported that he won't need surgery and is expected to be fully healthy for the start of training camp next month.
Martin was a three-star recruit out of Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas, before he joined the Oklahoma State program for the 2021 season. In his four years with the Cowboys, he appeared in 35 games and recorded 203 tackles (24 for a loss), seven sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. He also earned first-team All-Big 12 honors once (2023).
Earlier this offseason, 49ers director of player personnel Tariq Ahmed talked up Martin's communication skills and stated that he could wear the green dot if four-time All-Pro Fred Warner, who has been exceptionally durable in his career, was forced to miss time due to injury.
At this point, 2023 sixth-round pick Dee Winters is slated as the other starting linebacker next to Warner, but if Martin is fully healthy and performs well in camp, that job very well could be his in the season opener.

Diamondbacks catcher Moreno has hairline fracture of finger. Reliever Puk has surgery

DENVER (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno has a hairline fracture in his right index finger and could be sidelined until after the All-Star break. Moreno was injured June 6 in Cincinnati, then played through it for more than a week. He was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Monday. 'I appreciate what he was trying to do," manager Torey Lovullo said Friday night before the Diamondbacks faced Colorado. "I know that he had some at-bats that he was working through, pain-wise, and they were successful at-bats. He was just gutting it out, but it just became too much.' Star outfielder Corbin Carroll was out for a second straight game because of a contusion on his left hand after he was hit by a pitch Wednesday night in Toronto. X-rays showed no fracture and he was available off the bench Friday night. Meanwhile, left-handed reliever A.J. Puk had surgery on his left elbow Friday. He will miss the rest of the season. The surgery was to determine the condition of the ligament in his pitching elbow and if he would need it replaced. 'If the ligament's still in place, they won't replace the ligament,' Lovullo said. 'They'll just do that external bracing. If the ligament is damaged and they need to put a new ligament in there, yeah, it'll be officially Tommy John surgery.' Carroll was working on the field Friday before the game. 'Corb is much better, trending in a very positive direction. And just want to give him a work day, just try and get out, see how he feels,' Lovullo said. 'The last thing you want to do is put a bat in your hand and have something sting. So he's going to do all that he can. So as of right now, he'll be available for the game, and then we'll hopefully trend upward from there." ___

Trade Idea Lands Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey With Saints

Trade Idea Lands Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey With Saints originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Dolphins and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey mutually agreed to find a trade partner early in the offseason. However, there's now less than a month until training camp begins, and Ramsey remains in Miami. Advertisement The latest trade idea for the Dolphins' star is sending him to the New Orleans Saints for a fourth-round pick. The Saints don't have the largest need at the position, but have the cap space for Ramsey and could use a bona fide No. 1 option at cornerback in the midst of their rebuild. New Orleans' projected starting corners in 2025 are Kool-Aid McKinstry, Isaac Yiadom, and Alontae Taylor. The Saints drafted McKinstry in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he had a productive rookie campaign with 42 tackles, two TFLs, and six passes defended. Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey (5) against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first half during an NFL International Series game at Deutsche Bank Lee-Imagn Images After spending 2024 with the 49ers, Yiadom signed a three-year, $9 million deal with the Saints this offseason. The former 49er had similar numbers to McKinstry in 2024, collecting 46 tackles, six passes defended, and forcing two fumbles. Yiadom returns to the Saints in 2025 after spending 2022 and 2023 in New Orleans. Advertisement The Saints drafted Taylor in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft and have had stable production from him all three years. Taylor posted a career-high 89 tackles, seven TFLs, 16 passes defended, and four sacks in 2024. New Orleans has three reliable starters at cornerback and will be looking for another year of development in their young draft picks alongside the veteran Yiadom. However, the addition of Ramsey would bolster the secondary that already features Tyrann Mathieu and Justin Reid at safety. The Saints have just over $29 million in cap space available in 2025 and would be able to pick up Ramsey's contract. When the Dolphins inevitably move on from Ramsey, they'll be relying on Storm Duck and Kader Kohou to lead the cornerback group and look for the emergence of Cam Smith, Artie Burns, Jason Marshall Jr., or Ethan Bonner to fill the final spot. 49ers' Kyle Shanahan Given Surprising Grade After Down Season

49ers' Kyle Shanahan Given Surprising Grade After Down Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is very challenging to judge. He has been the head coach of two Super Bowl teams, the San Francisco 49ers, and has built one of the best offenses in the game. He remains a top play-caller in the sport. Despite all the good that Shanahan has brought, he has yet actually to win a title with the 49ers and has as many losing seasons as he does winning. Advertisement Seriously. After 2024's debacle of a finish for the 49ers, Shanahan has four losing seasons of less than seven wins. He currently has four winning seasons to his resume. Despite the clear inconsistencies, Pro Football Network ranked Shanahan as the sixth-best coach in football. "Kyle Shanahan remains one of the NFL's brightest minds, capable of building elite offenses and contending with flawed rosters," writes PFN's Brandon Austin. "In a league dominated by star quarterbacks, the San Francisco 49ers have reached Super Bowls with Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy under center. There are several pieces of evidence to support Shanahan's prowess as an offensive architect, including Matt Ryan's 2016 MVP campaign." Advertisement Shanahan's ability to lead multiple quarterbacks to the Super Bowl is impressive—no one denies that. And there is some truth to the belief that San Francisco's injury history has more to do with Shanahan's record than his coaching prowess. The fact that he ranks above a Super Bowl winner like Sean Payton or Mike Tomlin, though, is a stretch. Especially considering there is a good chance he may be on the hot seat if San Francisco goes through another down year with an aging roster.
