King Green 'not done' after brutal wheel kick KO loss at UFC 313

USA Today09-03-2025

King Green is taking his knockout loss to Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 313 in stride.
The longtime fighter ended up on the wrong end of the early Knockout of the Year frontrunner Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when Ruffy (12-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) unleashed a vicious spinning wheel kick that instantly floored Green (32-17-1 MMA, 13-12-1 UFC) in the first round.
It was a spectacular and shocking end to the lightweight bout, which opened the pay-per-view main card. The finish went viral and was No. 2 on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10, and as the defeated fighter, it can be a difficult pill to swallow.
Green, however, was nothing but gracious in defeat.
'This is the game we play,' Green said on Instagram Stories after UFC 313. 'There's wins, there's losses. It's just how it goes, you know? Shout out to Ruffy. You did your thing, brother. I'd like to see you have success in your future. Obrigado.'
With the defeat, Green has lost three of his past four and is 3-3 in his past six dating back to a submission of Tony Ferguson at UFC 291 in July 2023. He's also notched wins over Grant Dawson and Jim Miller, but in the losses during that stretch was finished in Round 1 by Jalin Turner, Paddy Pimblett and Ruffy.
The 38-year-old has been an active fighter since his January 2008 debut, and is one of just a handful of athletes on the UFC roster with more than 50 professional bouts.
Green is showing many of the traits of a fighter trending toward the end of their career, but he was definitive that this loss won't be his end point.
'Shout out to everyone that rides with me and came through this whole thing,' Green said. 'I love all you guys. I thank you so much for supporting me through all this bullsh*t. But we're not done. I just need some more time to get myself back to the cage. We'll be back.'

Phoenix Suns trade Durant to Houston

The Kevin Durant era is officially over in Phoenix. The big picture: The Phoenix Suns have traded the superstar to the Houston Rockets, according to multiple reports. Durant, on stage Sunday at the Fanatics Fest in New York, said: "I just felt like they wanted me to go ... they got what they wanted; I got what I wanted." In exchange, the Suns get shooting guard Jalen Green, small forward Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in this year's NBA Draft, and five second-round picks. Zoom in: The Suns lose a 15-time All-Star and former league MVP who, at age 36, was still scoring over 26 points per game. In Green, they get a young star who scored 21 points per game last season while helping lead Houston to the Western Conference's second-best record. Brooks is a top-flight perimeter defender named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2023. Phoenix also gets a much-needed first-round pick, which the team gave up in the trade that brought Durant to town two years ago. Catch up quick: Durant's arrival to the Valley was part of a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets that new Suns owner Mat Ishbia finalized his first full day on the job in February 2023. At the time, the Suns had championship aspirations, but were struggling after losing the NBA Finals less than two years earlier. Yes, but: The Durant era never met the grandiose expectations that came with it, despite the future Hall-of-Famer's eye-popping stats. The Suns lost in the second round of the playoffs Durant's first season with the team, got swept in the first round the following year, and missed the postseason entirely in 2025. Durant struggled with injuries, missing 20 games in his final season in Phoenix. What they're saying: "We can move on, and good luck to them going forward," Durant said Sunday. "Always remember my time there, but we're on to something else." What we're watching: It's unclear what the Suns' starting lineup, which already has high-scoring shooting guards Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, will look like with Green in the mix.

Report: Rockets-Suns trade for Kevin Durant could expand by July

With the Kevin Durant deal not being finalized until July, both the Rockets and Suns can expand the trade, if they find an opportunity they like. Though a verbal agreement is in place, the Houston-Phoenix trade for Kevin Durant won't be official until July. For the deal to work under the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Rockets will need Green to count at $33.3 million (his 2025-26 rate, in the first year of a contract extension) in outgoing salary. With that in mind, the Rockets and Suns have two weeks to potentially expand the trade, if it serves either team's interests. The Athletic's John Hollinger, formerly a front office executive for an NBA team, explains: Salary cap nerds will note that this trade seems destined to get larger — possibly much larger. The Suns have ample time to negotiate to send either Green, Brooks or any of the draft picks to third parties; some potential shenanigans could yield a decent-sized trade exception. Meanwhile, the Rockets can find ways to stuff guys with contract options like Jock Landale or Aaron Holiday in the deal to take back a player from a third team. The decision deadline for 2025-26 team options is June 29, so Rockets general manager Rafael Stone can take the next few days to explore options involving Landale or Holiday before any decision has to be made. Meet the fan who placed third against pros in Fanatics Games

(Credit: Getty Images) NEW YORK — For anyone who looked at the Fanatics Games' final leaderboard Sunday afternoon, there was only one question to ask: Who the hell is Matt Dennish? Fanatics Games final championship leaderboard: Tom Brady, 399.1 Justin Gaethje, 345.4 Matt Dennish, 325 Advertisement Dennish is now the answer to an age-old question: Can an average Joe beat the Pros? Matt Dennish more than held his own against the pros at the Fanatics Games. (Credit: OBB Media) Dennish is a 39-year-old high school teacher at his alma mater, Red Lion High School in York, Pennsylvania. He was one of 50 average fans who got the chance to compete against the pros for the top prize of $1 million, and he finished in third place to win a 2003-04 LeBron James rookie chrome refractor card, last valued at $250,000. Dennish later traded the card to Brady for $250,000 cash, plus a signed Brady card and jersey. Brady said he would give $5,000 to every fan who competed and donate the rest of his earnings to charity. Advertisement Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady added to his trophy case by taking home the initial Fanatics Games title and the $1 million prize. UFC fighter Justin Gaethje placed second and won a 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB. Six of the top 10 finishers were average fans. Dennish was clearly one of the best athletes in the competition. He stands 6-foot-6, was a standout cross-country and track runner and a basketball player in high school. He ran a 4:08 mile his freshman year at East Carolina, and he said his recent accomplishments included hitting a half-court shot at a Philadelphia 76ers game and working himself down to a two handicap on the golf course. Advertisement Dennish beat out such pros as Kevin Durant, Eli Manning, Dwight Howard, Rob Gronkowski, Denny Hamlin, Russell Wilson, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Julian Edelman. Contestants were scored in eight contests, and the lowest two numbers were dropped. Dennish came into Friday's competition most nervous about the WWE Superstar entrance since he isn't a fan of wrestling. "A friend who is a fan convinced me to do Joe Hendry," Dennish told cllct. "I got a belt that our high school women's wrestling team bought and took off my shirt." Dennish got 70 total points in the WWE event, good for 10th-best score of the day. The MLB pitching accuracy was next. Contestants were given six pitches to score as many points as they can by hitting targets. The top and bottom corners were worth five points. The middle strike zone was one, and all the rest were three. Dennish shined, hitting four five-pointers, a three and a one. No one did better. Next he hit the NHL washer-dryer puck shooting contest, an area he knew would be difficult. He's not a hockey guy. Given 12 shots, he failed to knock in one, only lifting the puck successfully once. Advertisement In the NFL QB skills, Dennish was impressive. He went 3-for-5 in the 10-yard toss and the 20-yard toss and missed the golden ball, a 30-yard toss, by a foot or two. The top three best contestants in this skill were not surprisingly: 1. Stroud, 2. Brady and 3 (tie). Russell Wilson and Eli Manning. Dennish came in a respectable 11th. Dennish also finished 11th overall in the UFC striking challenge, hitting the punching bag for a total of 75.5 points. The FIFA goal-scoring was a strategy game for Dennish. He hit six out of eight in the bottom corners for five points each, but then got greedy by trying the top corners for 10 points and missed them all. He came in sixth. Streamer Adin Ross finished with Friday's best score. Advertisement In the last event, the Dick's closest-to-the-pin golf contest, Dennish knew he would be among the best. And he was right. "It's basically all I do these days," he said. The challenge? The contestants had five chances to get the ball on the green at a 105-yard par-3 hole, simulated from Oakmont Country Club, the site of last week's U.S. Open. One point for the green, two points for within 15 yards. Dennish came away with a respectable four points, placing three on the green and one within 15 feet. Brady finished first, and Dennish was fourth, one spot ahead of Manning. After competing, Dennish sat around eating some pizza and reloading the scores. Before he headed home on his train back to Pennsylvania, he saw he was in third place behind Brady and just ahead of Manning. Advertisement Although he dropped to third Sunday after Gaethje passed him, Dennish managed to hold onto the third spot and finish on the podium.
