BAFTA TV Awards 2025: Post Office drama and Mr Loverman among big winners
Mr Bates Vs The Post Office and Mr Loverman were among the big winners at this year's BAFTA TV awards - with Danny Dyer and Ruth Jones picking up comedy prizes.
After Mr Bates was named the winner of the TV for best limited drama, ITV was also given a special award for commissioning a show that "brought dynamic change".
The four-part series, which aired in January 2024, depicted how former subpostmasters and subpostmistresses were held liable by the Post Office for financial discrepancies thrown up by its computerised accounting system, Horizon - shining a light on one of the widest miscarriages of justice in UK legal history.
Producer Patrick Spence said the show could never have been made without ITV, as well as the journalists who covered the wrongful convictions, and those who campaigned about the scandal.
"Our show didn't change the law, the people of this nation did that," he said.
Mr Bates stars Toby Jones and Monica Dolan missed out on prizes in the acting categories, with Marisa Abela named best actress for her performance in Industry and Lennie James named best actor for Mr Loverman, a series based on the novel of the same name by Booker Prize winner Bernadine Evaristo.
Both winners seemed shocked to receive the gongs, with first-time nominee Abela saying: "Oh my god, I really wasn't expecting that at all... This is insane."
James described the win as a "fantastic honour".
Earlier in the night, his co-star Ariyon Bakare took home the prize for best supporting actor, while Baby Reindeer's Jessica Gunning picked up the gong for best supporting actress.
Elsewhere, Dyer got one of the night's biggest cheers as his first ever BAFTA was announced - the award for male performance in a comedy, for his role in Sky's Mr Bigstuff - while Jones's final performance as Nessa in the long-awaited Gavin & Stacey: The Finale earned her the female comedy performance gong.
Accepting his prize, Dyer said "the acting was so bad it was funny", before he swore several times despite being warned about the rules. He also thanked his family, and writer and actor Ryan Sampson, who he called the "best thing to come out of Rotherham".
"I'm not going to lie this is immense," said Jones as she collected her award. "The person I would like to thank most his my dear, dear talented friend James Corden."
She said without British actor Corden, her co-creator and co-star, "Vanessa Shanessa Nessa' Jenkins would not exist".

This year's BAFTA Fellowship, the highest accolade given by the organisation, in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television, was presented to broadcaster Kirsty Wark for her "unwavering dedication and unmatched legacy in the world of news and current affairs broadcasting".
Two new categories celebrating children's television were also introduced this yearm with CBeebies As You Like It at Shakespeare's Globe taking home the inaugural prize for best children's scripted, and Sky's Disability and Me (FYI Investigates) winning the non-scripted prize.
The main ceremony, which was hosted by actor and presenter Alan Cumming at London's Royal Festival Hall, came two weeks after the BAFTA craft ceremony for technical awards - where Baby Reindeer, Rivals and Slow Horses each picked up two prizes.

Patrick Walden, Guitarist for British Group Babyshambles, Dies at 46
Patrick Walden, the guitarist for British group Babyshambles, has died at the age of 46. Babyshambles, fronted by Pete Doherty, announced Walden's death on social media in a joint statement. 'It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Patrick Walden's death,' reads the post. 'We feel very fortunate to have known/loved and worked with him and we kindly ask for respect and privacy during these difficult times.' No cause of death was given. Walden, a London native, had a short-lived stint with Babyshambles, which Doherty formed in 2004 after he was kicked out of the Libertines for drug abuse. He joined the group as lead guitarist alongside Doherty on vocals, Drew McConnell on bass and Gemma Clarke on drums, and co-wrote six songs on the band's 2005 debut 'Down in Albion' including 'Fuck Forever,' 'Pipedown' and 'Loyalty Song.' 'Down in Albion' was a moderate success in the U.K., peaking at No. 10 on the charts. 'Fuck Forever' became the group's biggest single, reaching No. 4 on the U.K. singles chart. Walden, who had previously played in bands including Fluid and White Sport, left the group in 2005 after dealing with drug abuse and accusations of assaulting his girlfriend, which led to a brief incarceration. The charges were inevitably dropped. Over the years, he would pop in for performances with Babyshambles, though he never officially rejoined the band. He was not present for a Babyshambles reunion that took place last year, and it was unclear if he would be joining the group for future performances. Lazzat runs home and then runs free in Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot
The aftermath of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes had almost as much drama as the race and it was certainly more extended. Lazzat, the 9-2 winner, galloped loose around the track for about a quarter of an hour and delayed the presentations after throwing his jockey, James Doyle, shortly after crossing the line. 'I did apologise to the king and queen when I went to collect my prize,' Doyle said, 'and said I should have stayed in Pony Club a bit longer than I did. We had a good laugh about that.' Lazzat was quickly away and soon leading a group of 10 horses racing down the middle of the track. While the Japanese hope Satono Reve, backed down to start favourite at 2-1, fired a serious challenge at him in the final furlong under João 'Magic Man' Moreira, Lazzat was a half-length in front at the line, with another recent Wathnan purchase, Flora Of Bermuda, another three lengths away in third. 'It's been an amazing week and that has capped it off,' Richard Brown, Wathnan's racing manager, said. 'What an amazing horse race, he's locked up with the Japanese horse and they've gone a long way clear in a six-furlong sprint. That was an absolutely phenomenal race to watch. Satono Reve ran a fine race to finish a half-length second, but he raced in a group of five runners near the stand rail as Lazzat led a larger group in the middle of the track. Had he enjoyed a little more of a tow into the race, it might well have been a different story. Charlie Appleby was on a miserable run of 37 losers at the Royal meeting dating back to the final day in 2022 as Rebel's Romance went to post for the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes. The most dependable and high-achieving horse in the yard delivered for his trainer when he needed it with a one-and-three-quarter-length defeat of Al Riffa. William Buick sent Rebel's Romance to the front well over a furlong out and the seven-times Group One winner stayed on strongly all the way to the line. He will now attempt to win an eighth Group One, taking his prize money earnings past £11m in the process, in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes over the same course and distance next month. It was a fantastic ride by William, and once he kicked for home, I knew it would take a good one to get past him. 'It's been a great week for Godolphin [with winners for the John Gosden and Saeed bin Suroor stables] and I'm just glad I've got the monkey off my back there. 'He's kept the whole yard afloat this week and you just don't come across these horses often in your career,' Appleby said. 'He's our stable favourite and always will be.' Advertisement Ryan Moore, who rode Sober to victory in the concluding Queen Alexandra Stakes, finished the week as the meeting's leading jockey for the 12th time with seven winners, while John & Thady Gosden, who tied with Aidan O'Brien on five winners after both drew a blank on Saturday, won the trainers' award thanks to one more runner-up. The trainers' award has now been won by either the O'Brien or Gosden stable at the past 11 Royal meetings.
