MediaTek continues to invest in India, eyes RedCap devices to enhance consumer experience: David Ku

'India is a great opportunity. Resource and operation-wise, we are continuing to invest. We'll start with beefing up more marketing initiatives in India,' David Ku, COO and CFO, MediaTek said.
In 2024, the Hsinchu-based multinational earned $16.5 billion in revenues, and has more than 21,000 employees worldwide that includes over 1,000 employees in India.
It spent nearly 25% or $4 billion on research and development (R&D) activities last year.
On Tuesday, the Taiwanese company, founded by Ming-Kai Tsai, debuted the world's smallest chipset to power smartphones. The 2-nanometer (nm) chip would be commercially available by next quarter.
TSMC, a MediaTek partner, is expected to commence mass production of the 2nm processor soon.
The company is also banking on RedCap technology-enabled devices as a part of its IoT strategy.
'It's (RedCap) actually is not just a product, it's actually a customer engagement. And probably, we will start with IoT and also wearables,' the top executive said.
The new technology products, according to Ku, consume less power, and leverage fifth-generation or 5G networks that allow low-latency communication.
The 5G RedCap-based devices offer a range of capabilities and high performance levels, and enable mid-range
IoT applications
such as Extended Reality (XR) glasses, health monitors, wearables and sensors, and video surveillance cameras.
Citing power efficiency, the executive said that consumers could get the benefit of the 5G although sometimes they don't want the legacy of the 5G. 'For IoT, power consumption is very important. If you use the traditional modem, the power consumption is not going to fit the profile.'
The technology is designed to bridge the gap between conventional 5G and IoT, focusing on applications that require moderate data rates and low power consumption, in addition to native 5G features such as network slicing.
It has emerged as a key component of
5G technology
. Distinguished by its efficient spectrum utilisation, low power consumption, and cost benefits. Emerged last year, the 5G RedCap technology is poised to play a role in a wide range of industries, according to the London-based GSMA.
In February last year, MediaTek launched its 5G RedCap portfolio - MediaTek T300 platform, an RF-system-on-chip (SoC) for IoT applications, built with MediaTek's M60 modem.
Earlier, the Taiwanese chipset company said that it would be collaborating with leading infrastructure providers and telecom carriers worldwide to connect to 5G SA networks and conduct Voice over New Radio (VoNR) calls and data transmissions using the MediaTek T300 platform.

India's booming technology sector and the young, tech-savvy population are making the country a pivotal market for global semiconductor giant MediaTek, according to company's India MD Anku Jain. India's strong economic growth and favourable demographics are driving rapid adoption of advanced technologies like 5G, smart devices, and AI-powered solutions, he said. "India is a very important market for MediaTek because it is a very huge consumption story,we can see the demographics -- which is a very young population, we can see our economy growing very fast. All these components are making the market very attractive for us," Jain told PTI. Beyond smartphones, MediaTek's chipsets power many devices, including smart TVs, tablets, chromebooks, routers, and the smart home segment. Jain noted that the company is now expanding into new verticals such as automotive, recently partnering with JioThings to develop 4G smart clusters for the two-wheeler EV segment, and supplying infotainment systems for cars like Skoda Slavia and Tata Punch EV. The company is also exploring opportunities in satellite communications, with its chipsets poised to support evolving requirements as India's satellite and IoT ecosystem grows. As per Counterpoint Research, as of April 2025, MediaTek led India's smartphone chipset market with a 45 per cent share, followed by Qualcomm at 32 per cent. The company established its first R&D centre in India in 2004 and now employs over 1,000 engineers across its Bengaluru and Noida offices. The Taiwanese firm on Friday launched the MediaTek Dimensity 8450, a 5G smartphone chip with eight Arm Cortex-A725 cores and an Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU. Jain outlined MediaTek's commitment to further investment in the Indian market and continued expansion of its engineering teams. The company views its Indian R&D centres as extensions of its global operations, enabling it to address multiple technology verticals from within the country. "In the near future, we'll have the number of engineers keep increasing with time because we are coming up with new innovations and the talent pool in India, the engineering strength in India is very, very good for us," he said.

SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son is reportedly planning a massive AI and robotics industrial zone in Arizona, a project that could cost up to $1 trillion if fully developed. The project, previously referred to as Project Crystal Land , aims to create a US-based manufacturing ecosystem for artificial intelligence and robotics technologies. The proposed site, informally dubbed the Arizona AI megaproject , is being compared to China's innovation and manufacturing hub. The project, as per reports, includes research and development labs, semiconductor production units, housing for tech workers, and integration with smart grid systems.
