Malaysia To Host GSMA M360 ASEAN From 2026 To 2028

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the GSMA M360 ASEAN event series from 2026 to 2028 under a multi-year strategic partnership signed between the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The agreement, signed yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC25) in Shanghai, names Malaysia as the official host nation for the M360 ASEAN series, with the inaugural edition to be held in Kuala Lumpur in September 2026. The collaboration marks a major step in positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for digital policy dialogue, industry innovation, and cross-border cooperation in Southeast Asia. MCMC Executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din said the partnership is a long-term strategic investment in regional leadership. "Malaysia is committed to being a convening platform for high-impact conversations on the future of connectivity. M360 ASEAN will be a space where policy meets innovation, and regional priorities find global resonance," he said in a statement. The M360 ASEAN event is expected to bring together leaders from both the public and private sectors across Asia and beyond, focusing on key digital economy issues such as 5G evolution, connectivity, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion. Meanwhile, in the same statement, GSMA Chief Regulatory Officer John Giusti said the hosting of M360 ASEAN and this year's Digital Nation Summit reflects Malaysia's strong commitment to ASEAN's digital ambitions. "Hosting both this year's Digital Nation Summit and next year's M360 ASEAN in Malaysia underscores our strong support for the region's 2045 vision. "By bringing together governments, mobile operators, and technology innovators, we aim to accelerate collaboration, investment, and inclusive connectivity across all ASEAN countries, laying the foundation for a more resilient and people-centred digital future. GSMA to launch M360 ASEAN 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Supporting 'ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future'

M360 ASEAN is the newly rebranded M360 APAC series, now focused on ASEAN's digital priorities Also bringing the 'Digital Nations Summit to Kuala Lumpur in September 2025 SHANGHAI, June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The GSMA and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) today signed an agreement during MWC25 Shanghai confirming that Kuala Lumpur will host two flagship GSMA events: a Digital Nation Summit on 23 September 2025 and the flagship M360 ASEAN 2026 next year. M360 ASEAN is a brand-new event, evolving from the GSMA's M360 APAC series, sharpening its focus on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) digital transformation priorities in line with the region's strategic ambitions. GSMA's M360 events draw the wider mobile ecosystem – operators, technology vendors, start-ups, investors and enterprises – to explore topics such as commercial 5G, fintech, IoT and emerging technologies that can translate policy ambitions into real-world impact. The upcoming Digital Nation Summit later this year will serve as a strategic lead-in to the flagship M360 event, bringing together ministers, regulators, and industry leaders to share best practices for building inclusive, secure, and sustainable digital societies – laying the policy groundwork for the region's next wave of growth. The two events will closely align with and advance the region's long-term vision, ' ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future, ' adopted by leaders of the ten Southeast Asian nations at the 46ᵗʰ ASEAN Summit in May. Central to this vision is the role of digital transformation and regional integration in driving inclusive and sustainable growth. "Hosting both this year's Digital Nation Summit and next year's M360 ASEAN in Malaysia underscores our strong support for the region's 2045 vision," said John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA, during today's signing ceremony at MWC25 Shanghai. "By bringing together governments, mobile operators, and technology innovators, we aim to accelerate collaboration, investment, and inclusive connectivity across all countries of ASEAN – laying the foundation for a more resilient and people-centred digital future. We're excited to launch the inaugural M360 ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur in 2026!" Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din, Executive Chairman of MCMC, said: "Our partnership with GSMA is a long-term strategic investment in regional leadership. Malaysia is committed to being a convening platform for high-impact conversations on the future of connectivity. M360 ASEAN will be a space where policy meets innovation, and regional priorities find global resonance."

Chinese mobile operators cut operational emissions

The Chinese mobile operation industry recently reduced their operational emissions for the first time in 2024. However the volume of mobile data traffic has nearly quadrupled since 2019. As a whole the industry has begun taking actions to improve its energy efficiency and increased the use of renewables. Before the decline last year, previous analyses found regular annual increases in emissions in China, which rose 7 per cent between 2019 and 2023. Energy consumption grew 30 per cent since 2019 as data consumption soared with the nationwide rollout of 5G services, with the nation ending 2024 with just over 1 billion 5G connections. Steven Moore, head of climate action at the GSMA, stated the opportunity in China is enormous, as operators can propel the industry forward in its efforts towards net zero. 'A lot more needs to be done, and it is encouraging to see the mobile industry in Greater China making progress in this way', he noted. 'However, this first decrease is only realised if it goes further next year. We must double down and ensure we are doing everything we can as a global industry to halve emissions by 2030'. The Mobile Net Zero: Greater China report, released at the event, noted the drop in emissions comes as a growing number of mobile operators in the region are setting voluntary climate targets. Four operators in Asia Pacific have validated near-term science-based targets, while three have validated net zero targets. Several key suppliers also have committed to science-based targets and 2050 net zero targets. The annual Mobile Net Zero report found the mobile industry trimmed operational emissions by 8 per cent between 2019 and 2023 despite surging demand. Source: Reuters Image Credit: Stock Image

Kaspersky eSIM Store is a new connectivity solution for international travel. Designed to make it easier for leisure and business travellers to stay online globally, it empowers users with easy internet access across 150+ countries and regions, with a choice of over 2,000 affordable data plans and transparent conditions without any roaming fees. The production of eSIM-compatible devices has increased tenfold in the last five years according to the GSMA. By 2028, it is expected that half of all mobile connections worldwide will use eSIM technology. To meet this growing trend, Kaspersky eSIM Store provides access to eSIM plans from local telecom operators all over the world with an easy interface and simple management. While traveling, an eSIM can help users avoid high roaming costs on a primary SIM, remove the need to search for a local SIM kiosk and share personal data with them, as well as avoiding the use of unsecured public Wi-Fi networks. Kaspersky eSIM Store features a user-friendly interface for plan selection, purchase, top-ups, and data usage management. Travellers can choose their preferred activation date, allowing them to set up their eSIM in advance and be connected the moment their trip begins all in just a few taps.
