MCMC, PDRM reaffirm commitment to combat online child sexual exploitation
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have reiterated their joint commitment to combat the crime of online child sexual exploitation through continuous enforcement and community awareness education.
They said in a joint statement today that a total of 1,501 offensive posts involving children were identified up to June 15, 2025, with 94 per cent of them successfully taken down as a result of cooperation with digital platform providers and following public complaints.
They added that through special operations, such as 'Op Pedo', a total of 13 individuals were arrested and more than 40,000 child sexual abuse material (CSAM) seized from several states.
According to the statement, the dissemination, storage or commercialisation of child sexual exploitation content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides for a fine of up to RM1 million, five years' imprisonment or both.
At the same time, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for legal action to be taken against any party who produces, disseminates, buys, sells, shares or possesses such related materials.
As a preventive measure, the MCMC has also intensified its Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), which targets students, parents and the community, including an emphasis on the prohibition on the use of social media accounts by children aged below 13.
The MCMC and PDRM urged all parties, including parents, educators and internet users, to cooperate in efforts to curb this crime.

Two Cambodian men detained for trespassing Kenyir Park
KUALA BERANG: Two Cambodian men who trespassed into the Kenyir State Park here, believed to be in search of forest produce and agarwood, were detained on June 18. Terengganu State Parks Management Council (MPTN) director, Tengku Datuk Mohd Arifin Tengku A. Rahman said the two men, aged in their 20s and 40s, were apprehended during a special operation, which was carried out in collaboration with several other enforcement agencies. He said that during the inspection, both suspects failed to present any written permission or permit to enter the park. The suspects have been remanded for 14 days from June 19 to facilitate investigations. Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally probed for nine offences
KOTA KINABALU: Participants of the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally are being investigated for nine offences related to the peaceful assembly held last Saturday (June 21), Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun said. He said the offences include incitement, open burning in a public area, possession of dangerous or corrosive substances during the rally, and raising sensitive issues involving royalty, religion, and race (3R). Investigations are being conducted not only under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 but also under the Sedition Act 1948 and the Penal Code. To date, we've received six police reports related to this case and opened three investigation papers covering nine offences. There were incidents during the rally that should not have occurred. 'No arrests have been made so far, but beginning today, several individuals involved will be called in to provide their statements,' he told a press conference at the Sabah Police Headquarters here today. The rally, organised by Suara Mahasiswa Universiti Malaysia Sabah, included a march through Kota Kinabalu and placards highlighting various issues in Sabah, such as corruption and water supply. Participants also burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Jauteh said the organisers had submitted a notification to the police, as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. Police then responded with 15 conditions to ensure public order was maintained. 'Many people misunderstand the process. The Act does not approve or license rallies — it simply outlines the procedure for organisers to notify the police, and for the police to respond. Our role is to help maintain public order and safeguard everyone involved, including the participants. 'Unfortunately, in this case, the organisers failed to comply with the stated conditions. While voicing their concerns is their right, it must be done responsibly and without provocation,' he said. He urged future rally organisers to abide by the required conditions or use proper channels to express their views, such as by holding direct meetings with relevant authorities. Meanwhile, Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Kasim Muda said police had no objections to the rally, provided it followed the stipulated rules and national laws. However, he pointed out that only part of the police response was shared on social media — specifically, the front page of the police notification — while the full list of conditions was not disclosed, leaving many participants unaware of the requirements.

They said daily monitoring and operations such as Op Pedo also saw the arrests of 13 people for offences related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and the seizure of 40,000 pieces of CSAM in December 2024. On Dec 23, former inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain said 13 men were arrested in six states on suspicion of committing online sexual offences involving CSAM. He said the suspects, aged between 20 and 74, were arrested at 18 locations in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Perak and Terengganu. Last Thursday, Bukit Aman said a university student was arrested under Op Pedo on April 29 for allegedly possessing 5,000 photos and videos of child and adult pornography. Siti Kamsiah Hassan, principal assistant director of Bukit Aman's sexual, women and child investigation division, said some of the materials were home-made, involving the student's two young cousins, aged four and nine.
