Ministry of Home Affairs issues notification for conducting national population census in 2027
NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Monday issued a formal notification for conducting the National Population Census for the year 2027 with the reference date of March 1, 2027.
The Gazette Notification, which has been issued in the name of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, under the administrative authority of the MHA, said, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Census Act, 1948 (37 of 1948), and in supersession of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs (Office of the Registrar General, India)…, dated 26th March, 2019 published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, section 3, sub-section (ii), dated 28th March, 2019, except as respects things done or omitted to be done before such supersession, the Central Government hereby declares that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027.'
The notification further read: 'The reference date for the said census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh, the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.' It went on to add that in respect of the UT of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, 'the reference date shall be 00:00 hours of the 1st day of October, 2026'.
It is to be noted here that this time for the first time since Independence the Census will also encompass caste enumeration.

The police in a statement said they have received information that two innocent villagers were brutally murdered by Naxalites in Sendrabor and Aempur villages under the Pamed police station area. The incident comes ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Chhattisgarh. Shah will reach Raipur on Sunday afternoon for a two-day visit to the state. On June 17, three villagers, including a 13-year-old boy, were strangled to death by Naxalites using a rope in their native Peddakorma Bijapur village of Bijapur district. Two of the three deceased were relatives of senior Maoist cadre Dinesh Modiyam, who surrendered before police in March this year, an official earlier said.

India will never restore the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah told The Times of India on Saturday. Shah asserted that India will use water that rightfully belongs to it, and that Pakistan 'will be starved of water that it has been getting unjustifiably'. He said that India will use the water that had been flowing to Pakistan from Rajasthan by constructing a canal. India had placed the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance a day after the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which left 26 persons dead. India said that the treaty would be suspended until Pakistan 'credibly and irrevocably' stopped its support for cross-border terrorism. Shah on Saturday told The Times of India: 'International treaties can't be annulled unilaterally but we had the right to put it in abeyance, which we have done. The treaty preamble mentions that it was for peace and progress of the two countries, but that has been violated, there is nothing left to protect.' India and Pakistan signed the Indus Water Treaty in 1960 with the World Bank as an additional signatory. The pact sought to divide the water of the Indus river and its tributaries equitably among the two countries. Under the treaty, water from three eastern rivers, Beas, Ravi and Sutlej, were allocated to India and that from the three western rivers – Indus, Chenab and Jhelum – to Pakistan. The treaty also allowed both countries to use the other's rivers for certain purposes, such as small hydroelectric projects that require little or no water storage. Experts told Scroll that the suspension of the treaty implies that India is no longer accountable to Pakistan for using, regulating or stopping the flow of the water of the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum rivers. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, Jal Shakti minister CR Patil had claimed that the Indian government would make sure that 'not a drop of water' goes to Pakistan. Experts, however, refuted claims that India can immediately block the flow of water into Pakistan.

Telangana govt submits detailed project report for Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-2 (B); plans 86.1-km expansion across 3 corridors worth Rs 19,579 crore
HYDERABAD: Days after Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar at his residence in New Delhi and briefed him on the importance of the Phase-2 project, the Telangana govt submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and all required documents for the Phase-2 (B) proposal to the central govt, according to Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited managing director NVS Reddy. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The project, which was approved by the state cabinet, proposes extending the metro network by 86.1 km at an estimated total cost of Rs 19,579 crore. The Phase 2 (B) proposal includes three corridors: RGIA to Bharat Future City (Skills University), covering 39.6 km at a cost of Rs 7,168 crore; JBS to Medchal, spanning 24.5 km at Rs 6,946 crore; and JBS to Shamirpet, extending 22 km at Rs 5,465 crore. Similar to the previously submitted Phase 2 (A) project, which comprised five corridors totalling 76.4 km, Phase 2 (B) is also proposed as a joint venture between the central govt and the Telangana govt. According to the central govt's JV norms, funding will comprise Rs 5,874 crore (30%) from the Telangana govt, Rs 3,524 crore (18%) from the central govt, Rs 9,398 crore (48%) in the form of debt from international financial institutions and Rs 783 crore (4%) through a public-private partnership (PPP) component.
