Stanford Lake Gr 9 learners tackle 7-day hiking and kayaking challenge
Quick read Gr 9s from Stanford Lake College completed a 105km expedition called In the Footsteps of Legends. The 7-day journey included hiking, paddling, camping and moments of personal reflection. The expedition started in Sekororo with a 10km hike and 840m climb to Christmas Plateau. Learners camped in villages, bathed in mountain streams and saw part of the 1838 Louis Trichardt road. Learners shared skits linking their experience to school values and did guard duty at night. Full story below. Full story POLOKWANE – Gr 9 learners from Stanford Lake College recently spent seven days travelling 105km hiking and paddling in an expedition called, In the Footsteps of Legends. The expedition started in the village Sekororo with a distance of 10km and an 840m climb. That evening, they camped at Christmas Plateau. The rest of the week followed with different distances, uphills and downhills. The group had the opportunity to experience a refreshing mountain stream bath. On the third day, the group set up camp in Mankele Village next to the Olifants River. Some other memorable moments include a sightseeing of a section of the road that Louis Trichardt built in 1838. On the last two days, the learners had to do guard duty, where they had to manage the beats and the duty roster. At the last camp, the hikers took part in Solo, where they had the chance to reflect on all the privileges they have, as well as their gratitude. The groups had to perform two-minute skits with the exhibition as the topic, and they had to cover at least two school values. On the fourth day, the expeditioners exchanged their backpacks for rafts and river gear and paddled 10km to Loerie Camp. The next three days, the learners paddled almost 60km. On the last day, the learners had to paddle to Thsabaleshoba village facing rapids such as Rent-o-kill, Double Trouble, and Rollercoaster. Deegan Davis, one of the participants, says the expedition was phenomenal in every way. 'From the amazing views to the nights when we could see the city lights, everything was spectacular. My favourite moment was one morning when I woke up and the sun was peeking through the mountains to create the ultimate best view.' Juliet Leher also participated. 'Kayaking was not easy, but it was worth it, and while you would fall in the water every once in a while, you would always come out stronger than you were before. Plus, hot chocolate always tastes best after a long hike.' At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

Daspoort tunnel to be closed for weekend maintenance
Daspoort tunnel to be closed for weekend maintenance The Tshwane metro has advised motorists that the Daspoort tunnel will be undergoing maintenance on June 21 and 22. Bremer Street will be closed between Deborah and Market streets from 08:00 until 16:00 on both days. Toward the end of April, MMC for Roads and Transport Tlangi Mogale led a similar effort. The work entailed filling potholes, cleaning stormwater drains and other repairs. Ward 1 councillor Leon Kruyshaar, who has said that the tunnel is synonymous with several issues, urged motorists to avoid the tunnel this weekend as much as they could. 'Please do not think you can use this tunnel on Saturday and Sunday, it will definitely be closed up. They may allow access in the evening, but I can tell you for sure, not between 08:00 and late afternoon,' Kruyshaar said. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, such as the following: – Es'kia Mphahlele Drive – Van Der Hoff Road – The R80 – N4 Magalies Freeway. Stakeholders have apologised to residents for the inconvenience. Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to bennittb@ or phone us on 083 625 4114. 6 coastal walks in the Western Cape with breathtaking views
The Western Cape isn't short on drama when it comes to scenery. Jagged cliffs, turquoise waves, and mountain backdrops combine for some of the most spectacular coastal walks in South Africa. From Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay, the scenery along those walks is something you'll never forget! So, whether you're chasing solitude, sea spray, or the perfect Instagram shot, here are six unmissable walks where the views do all the talking… Distance: 6.5km return Duration: 2–3 hours This is not the drive – it's the hike above it. The Chapman's Peak Trail is lesser-known but punches well above its weight in beauty. The path climbs steadily through fynbos-covered slopes to a summit with panoramic views over Hout Bay, the Atlantic, and the winding road below. Sunset here? Unbeatable. Robberg Nature Reserve. Image: canva Distance: 2km (short loop) to 9.2km (point-to-point full loop) Duration: 30 minutes to 4 hours This rugged peninsula trail is a showstopper. Sheer cliffs, seal colonies, prehistoric caves, and turquoise coves come one after the other. The full loop is a challenge, with scrambles and steep climbs, but the raw beauty and crashing surf along this coastal walk make it worth every step. Distance: 8km return Duration: 2.5–3 hours Often overlooked, this walk through the Kogelberg Biosphere combines indigenous forest, waterfalls, and crashing surf. The trail skirts cliffs and tidal pools, and offers regular sightings of dassies, seabirds, and even whales during season. It's peaceful, raw, and unforgettable! Cape Point lighthouse walk. Image: canva Distance: 2km return Duration: 30–45 minutes Short, steep, and scenic, this coastal walk leads up to the old Cape Point lighthouse with uninterrupted views over two oceans. It's a tourist hotspot, yes – but with good reason. For a quieter option, take the less-travelled Lighthouse Keeper's Trail that hugs the cliffs below. Distance: Around 5.5km return Duration: 1–1.5 hours Urban but iconic, the Sea Point Promenade is a flat, easy coastal walk with nonstop views of the Atlantic Ocean, Signal Hill, and Lion's Head. Walkers, runners, dogs, and cyclists share this stretch, and there's public art, coffee stops, and even outdoor gyms along the way. Sunsets here are next level. De Hoop Whale Trail. Image: canva Distance: Around 5km (from Potberg to Cupidoskraal section) Duration: 1.5–2 hours The full Whale Trail is a five-day trek, but even the first section gives you a taste of its wild beauty. Walk through renosterveld and coastal cliffs with the sound of surf in your ears. From June to November, expect whale sightings galore. Booking is essential for the full trail, but day hikes are possible with a permit. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
