Squash: Egyptian four-time world champion Ali Farag retires at 33 - Omni sports
Egypt's four-time world champion and former World No.1 Ali Farag has announced his retirement from professional squash with immediate effect, calling time on one of the sport's most decorated careers.
The 33-year-old Harvard graduate, who held the World No.1 position for 238 weeks, shared the news in an emotional Instagram reel on Tuesday, saying he was stepping away with 'a full heart, a peaceful mind, and an open soul.'
'I hereby announce my retirement from our beautiful sport,' Farag said. 'It's been long coming ever since COVID really and I've achieved all my goals... Squash has been my passion, my identity and my purpose for as long as I can remember.'
Farag's decision comes less than two weeks after he reached his fifth World Championship final in Chicago, where he lost to current World No.1 Mostafa Asal. He retires ranked second in the PSA world rankings.
Widely regarded as one of the finest players in squash history, Farag claimed 46 PSA Tour titles, placing him sixth on the all-time men's list. His trophy haul includes four World Championships, four Tournament of Champions titles, three Qatar Classics, and three Egyptian Opens. He also won the British Open and three U.S. Open titles—one of which he famously shared with his wife, fellow squash star Nour El Tayeb, in 2017.
Farag's professional career began in 2005 and spanned 553 PSA matches, of which he won 445. He also served as PSA Men's President for four years and was voted by peers for the PSA Spirit of Squash Award seven times over the past eight years.
In his farewell message, Farag reflected on his journey, noting the sacrifices made for his family.
'I've missed so many of the milestones that I wanted to be there for—the school pickups, the late-night cuddles, the bedtime stories,' he said. 'I've always believed in balance and I feel like that balance has shifted now.'
He also thanked his parents, brother, and coaches—including Karim Darwish and Mike Way—and paid tribute to his wife, whom he called 'the most important person' in his life.
Farag concluded his message by expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people, stating:
'My heart, like so many others, is with the Palestinian people... May we never let silence be complicity.'
The Professional Squash Association (PSA) praised Farag's legacy.
'Ali has been a true ambassador for the sport,' said PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough. 'He combined incredible athleticism and talent with humility and sportsmanship... His presence on the tour will be deeply missed.'
Farag's retirement means he will not compete in next week's British Open in Birmingham. His seeding will be passed on to Peru's Diego Elias, while England's Simon Herbert will move into the main draw.
Career highlights:
PSA titles: 46
PSA finals: 81
Match wins: 445
Weeks at World No.1: 238
Represented Egypt in four World Team Championships (all wins)
Farag ends his career not just as a champion, but as a symbol of professionalism and grace in modern squash.

La Laguna Tenerife, alongside AEK Betsson BC and Filou Oostende, are members of a truly special club, as the only three clubs to have participated in every season of the Basketball Champions League. These are, in alphabetical order, the first 29 teams in the Regular Season lineup (three more teams will emerge from the Qualification Round tournaments), the national champions marked with an asterisk: AEK Betsson BC (GRE); ALBA BERLIN (GER); Bnei Penlink Herzliya (ISR); Cholet Basket (FRA); Dreamland Gran Canaria (ESP); ERA Nymburk* (CZE); Filou Oostende* (BEL); FIT/One Wurzburg Baskets (GER); Galatasaray (TUR); Hapoel Netanel Holon (ISR); Igokea m:tel* (BIH); Joventut Badalona (ESP); Karditsa Iaponiki (GRE); La Laguna Tenerife (ESP); Le Mans Sarthe Basket (FRA); Mersin Sports Club (TUR); MLP Academics Heidelberg (GER); NHSZ-Szolnoki Olajbanyasz* (HUN); Pallacanestro Trieste (ITA); Promitheas Patras Vikos Cola (GRE); Rytas Vilnius (LTU); Sabah BC* (AZE); SL Benfica* (POR); Spartak Office Shoes (SRB); Tofas Bursa (TUR); Trapani Shark (ITA); Unicaja (ESP); VEF Riga* (LAT); and the champions of Poland (Start Lublin or Legia Warszawa). Further eight champions are in the Qualification Rounds, ranging from Denmark (Bakken Bears) to Cyprus (AEK Larnaca). There could be another champion in there, as SC Derby are in the Montenegrin League Finals. The 24 clubs that will compete in the Qualification Round will be drawn into three tournaments, with the winner of each tournament advancing to the Regular Season. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Riveiro reflects on missed chances as Al Ahly settle for a point
Published: Sunday, 15 June 2025 Al Ahly forward Wessam Abou Ali believes the Egyptian giants "dropped two points" after being held to a goalless draw by Inter Miami in their opening Group A match at the FIFA Club World Cup in Miami. The Palestinian striker, who had a first-half goal disallowed for offside, reflected on a frustrating night in front of goal for the CAF Champions League winners. 'We could have scored three or four goals in the first half,' Abou Ali said. 'Unfortunately, we didn't take our chances to get the win… our fans were amazing and gave us a real boost, but it wasn't to be.' The game marked Jose Riveiro's first competitive match as Al Ahly head coach, and the Spaniard echoed his striker's frustration. 'We made some mistakes and missed some good chances today,' he admitted. 'We were in control in the first half, but our performance dipped a bit in the second, when we had some issues in transition and misplaced a few passes.' Missed penalty proves decisive Al Ahly were awarded a penalty shortly before half-time after substitute Ahmed 'Zizo' Mostafa was brought down, but Mahmoud Hassan 'Trezeguet' saw his effort saved by Inter Miami goalkeeper Oscar Ustari — a moment that ultimately denied the Red Eagles all three points. 'Had we scored that, the game would have been totally different,' Riveiro said. 'Still, there are positives we can build on.' Shenawy's saves ensure a point Veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was called into action repeatedly in the second half as the MLS side grew in confidence. 'Inter Miami are a great side,' he said. 'We did what we needed to in the first half, but the humidity and the pressure affected us after the break. At least we got a draw in the end.' Despite early dominance, Al Ahly had to withstand late pressure, with El Shenawy producing a spectacular save to deny a late header from close range. Must-win clash with Palmeiras looms The result leaves both sides on a point each in Group A, where Palmeiras and Porto complete the field. Al Ahly next face the Brazilian champions on 19 June, a match they may now need to win to keep realistic hopes of qualification alive. 'We're going to work hard to prepare,' said Abou Ali. 'Palmeiras will be tough, but hopefully luck will be on our side in our next games.'
