May 28 (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers agreed to sign Thomas Morstead, the veteran punter announced Wednesday on social media.
Terms of the pact are not yet disclosed. Morstead spent last season with the New York Jets, where new 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh served as head coach before being fired.
The 16-year veteran averaged 47.2 yards per punt over 17 appearances last season. He punted a league-high 99 times for 4,831 yards -- 48.8 yards per punt -- in 2023.
For his career, the 2012 Pro Bowl selection averaged 46.8 yards per punt on 960 attempts.
The 49ers reported Tuesday for their first day of organized activity off-season workouts. Mandatory minicamp will be held June 10 and 11.

Alabama Legend CJ Mosley Announces Major Career Decision

Alabama Legend CJ Mosley Announces Major Career Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide defense in the 2011 season was a dominant force. Alabama held opponents to 8.3 points, 111.5 passing yards and 72.2 rushing yards per game that year. One of the members of that star-studded defense was linebacker CJ Mosley. Advertisement On Thursday, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported that Mosley had decided to retire from football. Mosley played for Alabama from 2010-13, taking home multiple All-American selections (2012-13), the Butkus Award (2013) and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year (2013). The linebacker accounted for 317 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and five interceptions during his time at Alabama. New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley. Steve Roberts-Imagn Images After a fruitful college career, Mosley took his talents to the NFL. He was drafted 17th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2014 NFL Draft. He got off to a hot start in the NFL with the Ravens, making the Pro Bowl in four of the five seasons he spent with the franchise. He was also a four-time All-Pro with the Ravens and won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2014. Advertisement Mosley spent 2014-18 with the team before becoming a member of the New York Jets in 2019. His first season with his new team did not go as planned, as he only played in two games because of a groin injury. He then opted out of the 2020 NFL season. However, he returned in 2021 and made a significant contribution on defense. He followed up the 2021 season by making the Pro Bowl in 2022. The injury issues resurfaced last season, with Mosley missing 13 games due to a neck injury and losing the starting job at middle linebacker. Mosley recorded 1,083 total tackles, 55 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles. The Crimson Tide has recruited well under DeBoer, with the head coach holding the No. 10 overall 2026 recruiting class on On3 Sports. Recent recruiting news for Alabama includes the commitment date for target Deacon Schmitt, and the Crimson Tide was also named a finalist for edge rusher Khamari Brooks. 49ers 3rd-Round Rookie Linebacker Suffers Fracture

49ers 3rd-Round Rookie Linebacker Suffers Fracture originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Francisco 49ers have suffered an offseason injury as rookie linebacker Nick Martin fractured his thumb while lifting weights, as reported by Noah Furtado of the San Francisco Chronicle. Advertisement Early reports were that it was a recent injury, but Furtado clarified the situation on his X account. "Regarding rumors that #49ers third-round LB Nick Martin broke his thumb, he suffered a minor fracture a few weeks ago but did not miss any subsequent practices or workouts, per source. Martin won't need surgery and is expected to be fully healthy by training camp." It's notable that the thumb injury never sidelined Martin and he never missed any offseason practice time. He's expected to be fully ready for the beginning of training camp. The 22-year-old missed seven games of his final season at Oklahoma State with a knee injury, but he's expected to be a contributor in his rookie season after the 49ers drafted him in the third round with the No. 75 overall pick. Advertisement Martin's pick wasn't a surprise, as the team needed to address defense in the draft. Martin was a First-Team All-Big 12 standout who posted 140 tackles with 16 for loss last season, and should have an opportunity to crack the starting lineup early, as San Francisco doesn't have a ton of seasoned veterans at outside linebacker other than Fred Warner. If Martin proves he's healthy, he'll be fighting for playing time with Dee Winters, Tatum Bethune and others. But first, he could have to impress on special teams for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
