What makes Pennington so special? According to the locals, it's because a lot of love and care has been shown to this hidden gem.
The town certainly has a lot to offer.
Firstly, the beach is special because of it's all-year-round weather. Everyone loves taking pictures on the deck – and great news – a picture frame will be installed on the deck soon.
Dogs are welcome and many people meet on the beach with their pets, so both humans and dogs can socialise. It must be noted that dogs are not allowed on the Blue Flag beach, between the tidal pool and lifeguard tower.
And yes, that's right. Pennington has Blue Flag status. Water quality is measured in two microbial indicators to test the faecal contamination in Blue Flag bathing waters and environmental management includes cleanliness of the beach, ablution facilities, accessibility to disabled persons, and no contamination in bathing water.
There is also environmental education that entails awareness programmes which can be conducted in different target groups, ranging from school children to adults, and can be anything pertaining to coastal care and environmental management.
The beach has lifeguards on duty (365 days a year) with suitable equipment. The area also has suitable parking spaces and controlled traffic, and prohibited use of alcohol to ensure safety for all beachgoers.
Tidy Towns Pennington has also just put up boards that show the swimming conditions, tides, etc.
The Tidy Towns group has helped put a sparkle in Pennington too.
Over time, they upgraded the lifesavers' tower making sure they are protected from wind, rain and sun; planted gardens to welcome all to the area; carried out a car park project worth over R350 000; Village Green is always great to walk through with its gardens and they have placed benches for workers and the public.
Many residents collect litter off the beach on a regular basis, and Tidy Towns has provided recycling bins.
Car guards have also been kitted out by Tidy Towns in matching orange vests and hats to distinguish them and make them 'official' although they are all volunteers and depend on tips.
Pennington ensures that nature is put first, with wildlife corridors kept 'wild' for the safe passage of bushbuck, duikers and mongoose. Local resident, Allan McLennan, does a Bird Walk every week, often in the Nkomba Bird Sanctuary or Umdoni Park. Contact him on 072 2459605.
At Umdoni Park, you will find many different walking, running and cycling trails through the forest. There are viewing decks looking down the gorge where one can spot the Cape otters in the river, many benches, and also a picnic table in the Enchanted Forest as well as a Bird Hide.
There is Jeff's Wild Trail for the more adventurous, named after Jeff Sandwith, a local resident who helped to design some of the trails, as well as identifying and labelling many of the indigenous trees in the forest. There is a beautiful waterfall along one of the trails too.
On Thursday evenings, people can join the Thirsty Thursday running group, who run/walk 3km, 5km, 8km or 12km though the forest – with headlamps.
These are just a handful of the experiences Pennington has to offer. The friendly residents invite one and all to visit the area and explore what they have on offer and make memories to last a lifetime.

Sea Point's Ritz Hotel could soon be in new hands and ready to add some glitz to the area
Has the Ritz Hotel in Sea Point been sold? Yes, say agents in the area, but no one is willing to confirm it on the record. Image: Vivian Warby Located on the popular Atlantic Seaboard, the Ritz Hotel Cape Town is believed to have been sold for a whopping R350 million to a "Dutch company". It is believed the deal was brokered by a local estate agency and that the buyer (or consortium) is said to be going to continue with the renovations of the building which were half-way completed before drama hit it in 2018. Atlantic Seabord agents are abuzz with the news, an open secret they say, however no one was willing to absolutely confirm or deny it on record ... but they had all heard it was sold... and not by those I interviewed. However, a stop-over at the once fashionable, fabulous and desirable Ritz Hotel Cape Town yesterday, had it locked up and looking anything but glamourous. A sign with no life. Will the Ritz Hotel Cape Town ever come alive again? Image: Vivian Warby Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ A security guard came to ask me what I was doing there. "I heard it's been sold." He replied: "Don't believe everything you've been told... there are always a lot of stories about this building and none come true." It is easy to see why he may feel a bit cynical. Rumours have been swirling since Nicky van der Walt and his company in 2018 soft launched the hotel with what was at the time rumoured to have been a R120 million rejuvenation. But its planned reopening was ultimately unsuccessful when the Cape Town High Court ordered Van de Walt's management company to vacate the building in July 2018, effectively halting the reopening. At the time it was reported that the Cape Town High Court ruled Van de Walt's management company had displayed 'chutzpah of the first order' by occupying the Sea Point hotel since March 2017 without paying a cent to Ritz Plaza‚ which owned the property. Yesterday the derelict 23-storey Ritz Hotel, full of dust and some autumn leaves on the once welcoming entrance mat and a sign with no lights to welcome a visitor, stood somewhat frazzled in the grey winter skies. The security guard assured me that no one has been living in the building, a big feat given how empty buildings are often illegally occupied in a city that has an affordable housing crisis. The Revolving Restaurant may still get its turn again. Image: vivian Warby

Gautrain launches 50% fare discount with new KlevaMova offer
Travelling on the Gautrain has become more affordable for many in Gauteng, thanks to a new discounted fare initiative called KlevaMova. Launched by the Gautrain Management Agency and the provincial Department of Roads and Transport, the product offers a substantial 50% discount on train fares to a wide range of qualifying passengers. The discount is available to individuals living in households with a combined annual income of R350 000 or less, students under the age of 25, learners, pensioners, and recipients of Sassas's disability grant. The discounted tickets are available as weekly, monthly, and return trip products. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela described the initiative as a vital step in making public transport more accessible to vulnerable groups. 'The high cost of travel continues to be a burden, especially for those living on the outskirts of economic centres,' she said. 'By reducing fares, we aim to ease the financial pressure on households and improve access to work and study opportunities.' Nearly 60% of households were spending more than 10% of their income on public transport in 2019/20, a notable increase from 55% in 2014. Diale-Tlabela also called on employers to promote KlevaMova among qualifying staff. 'We want to see a more inclusive ridership on the Gautrain. This is about creating equity in mobility.' To benefit from KlevaMova, individuals must apply by submitting supporting documentation. Applications are subject to verification before approval. From April 1 to July 31 2025, all Gautrain users can park at any station for just R1 per day, making the service even more appealing to those who drive to stations. This latest move aligns with the province's long-term Integrated Transport Master Plan, which places passenger rail at the centre of efforts to reduce road congestion, accidents, and emissions. With KlevaMova now available, public transport in Gauteng may finally become a viable and cost-effective option for many more residents.
