Mixed ability rugby: 'I never thought I'd play full contact'
Being the smallest player on his team does not bother Adam Frew as he prepares for the mixed-ability rugby world cup in Spain. The 28-year-old, who is 5ft 4in (1.63m) tall and plays hooker, said he loves the "the camaraderie, the friendship, the fun and the fitness" of playing in the Belfast-based Malone Tornadoes squad. The team includes the long-retired Scotland winger, Stewart Porter, and flanker Stephen McKinty who won the European Cup with Ulster in 1999 and current Ulster player Harry Sheridan."I never thought that being so small, and with a disability, I would ever have got to play full contact rugby," said Adam.
"It has really kicked me into shape because before I would have just sat in the house and done nothing, and now that I'm playing rugby I'm like, 'I have to get bigger, I have to get stronger'."In mixed-ability rugby matches, players with and without physical and learning disabilities, play together on the same team. The world cup is taking place this week in Pamplona in northern Spain. The tournament includes representatives from 24 rugby-playing countries including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales.
At the last World Cup, the Tornadoes were knocked out in the semi-final stage. There are a number of family links within the squad, including father and son Niall and James Johnston, plus Harry Sheridan, his dad Barry and brother Will.Harry said: "Mixed-ability rugby is a unique dynamic. There's so much enjoyment that comes with it for everyone involved."Martin Halliday, whose disabled son Joshua is also in the squad, said the tournament in Spain is not being treated like a holiday."We're not just going to play, we're not just going to compete, we're going to win," he said.
That is also the message from the team captain Jacob Sullivan, 26, from Bangor. He said: "I joined the Tornadoes in 2018. It's changed my life forever. I love playing with my mates, and I think we can win the cup."
There are 32 teams involved in the tournament, 24 in the men's and eight in the women's competition. As part of their pre-tournament training, the Tornadoes trained with the full Ulster squad at the Kingspan stadium in Belfast. In the group stage of the competition they are due to face teams from Italy, Spain, and England.Although scrums are uncontested, the mixed-ability game is played in the official rugby format by 15-a-side teams, with rucks, mauls, and line-outs.Each team is made up of 'star players' who have varied abilities and 'facilitators' who take part, mindful of the abilities of those around them.
Ashley Mulligan, one of the facilitators, believes mixed-ability rugby is more than just a sport. He said: "It shows you what you can do. It's about ability not disability – including people from every background, every shape, size, creed and colour."It's such a welcoming environment."What unites the squad is a strong will to win.The Tornadoes travel to Spain believing they can storm to victory.

England U21 vs Holland U21 preview: Free betting tips, odds and predictions for Euros semi-final
ENGLAND clash with Holland in the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championships on Wednesday. SunSport betting experts have previewed the contest and selected the best bets, tips and exclusive sign-up bonuses from our leading betting partners. England U21 vs Holland U21 preview England's Under-21s remain firmly on course to defend their European Championship crown after a terrific 3-1 quarter-final victory over Spain. Goals from James McAtee, Harvey Elliott, and Elliot Anderson sealed a statement win for Lee Carsley's side, who had looked far from convincing during the group stage. But the Young Lions found their rhythm at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho on Saturday, producing their best performance of the tournament when it mattered most. The result has installed England as favourites to lift the trophy once again, with confidence high heading into Wednesday's semi-final clash against the Netherlands in Bratislava. A fiery conclusion to the Spain match saw tempers flare and a mass brawl unfold after the final whistle - prompting Carsley to quip there were "better ways to build camaraderie." Still, the scuffle underlined the grit and fight within this England squad as they look to retain their title. The Dutch, however, promise to be stern opposition. While they too were underwhelming in the group stage - registering just one win from three - they demonstrated impressive resilience in their quarter-final win over Portugal, holding on for a 1-0 victory despite going down to 10 men after just 21 minutes. If past meetings are anything to go by, this encounter will be tight. Five of the last six meetings between these sides since 2007 have ended in draws after 90 minutes - including a 1-1 stalemate in their most recent clash in November 2024. England U21 vs Holland U21 preview betting tips and predictions Low scoring I don't anticipate a high-scoring affair on Wednesday, despite the attacking talent on both sides. As noted, five of the last six encounters between these nations have ended in draws, with only one featuring more than 2.5 goals. England, despite their 3-1 win in the quarter-finals, have been wasteful in front of goal throughout the tournament (66 shots and just 17 on target). Meanwhile, the Netherlands come into this match with back-to-back clean sheets and four shutouts in their last six games. Any time, any place James McAtee turned down the chance to play with Manchester City at the Club World Cup - and that's proven very handy indeed for Lee Carsley's side. McAtee put in an excellent display against Spain, netting in the 10th-minute from a corner. The 22-year-old now has seven goals in 21 appearances for the Young Lions - six of those arriving in his last nine starts. He also boasts the most attempts on goal of any England player at this year's competition (10). Terms and conditions *Midnite: 18+ New UK customers. Bet £10 on accas with 4+ legs, min odds 3/1 (4.0). Rubbing shoulders with the enemy! Lucy Bronze enjoys holiday with Spain star Ona Batlle - who was part of the team who inflicted World Cup heartache - ahead of women's Euros
Lionesses star Lucy Bronze has taken a well earned rest ahead of the women's Euros alongside Spain rival Ona Batlle. Bronze, 33, who plies her trade for Chelsea, is currently preparing for this summer's European Championships where she may come up against Batlle. The pair were team-mates in the 2023-24 season when they were at Barcelona having previously been rivals after Spain beat England in the World Cup final in 2023. Between 2020 and 2022 Bronze and Batlle also played in Manchester for City and United respectively. Last week, Bronze and Batlle shared photos from their trip on their respective social media profiles. It appeared the duo were celebrating Batlle's birthday, with the Spaniard's caption reading: 'Bday week.' Bronze and Batlle enjoyed a hugely successful season at Barcelona together back in 2023-24 The location is unclear, but within the selection of pictures, Bronze and Batlle posed together and looked to be enjoying their trip. In one photo, it appeared they were having an ice cream in the sun, while another saw them relaxing on a lilo together in the sea. In a further snap on Bronze's post, they took a boat trip and they also spent some time in a private pool. Bronze and Batlle similarly shared a photo together in a mirror. Meanwhile, during their sole season together at Barcelona, the Catalan giants enjoyed a historic campaign. As team-mates, Batlle and Bronze won the Champions League, Liga F, the Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup before the right back moved to Chelsea last summer. Elsewhere, back in 2023 after Spain beat England in the World Cup final, Batlle famously consoled a tearful Bronze after full-time. Following their holiday, Bronze has since linked up with England ahead of this summer's tournament in Switzerland. The right back, who will play at her seventh major tournament, is a Lionesses legend and is one of 13 players in Sarina Wiegman's 23-strong group that won the Euros in 2022. However, Wiegman has been hit by several blows ahead of England's opening clash against France on July 5. Mary Earps and Fran Kirby have both retired from international football, while Millie Bright also made herself unavailable for selection, saying she is unable to give '100 per cent mentally or physically'. Nevertheless, Wiegman defended England's build-up to the tournament and revealed why she thinks the Lionesses aren't in crisis. 'That is not the case,' she insisted earlier this month. 'We know what is happening in the team. I think – and hope – there is competition going on in the team. 'I feel very comfortable. I'm very happy with the team and I'm very excited and I'm looking forward to it. For me, it doesn't feel like a crisis at all.' The Lionesses face Jamaica in a warm-up game this Sunday, before they take on France, the Netherlands and Wales in their group. Meanwhile, Spain are in Group B alongside Belgium, Italy and Portugal.
