Celebrate the life of Presley Chweneyagae on DStv and Showmax

South Africa stands united in grief as it bids farewell to Presley Chweneyagae, a giant of the screen and stage, who passed away at the age of 40.
This weekend, DStv and Showmax celebrate his life, legacy, and unforgettable artistry with a special line-up of his finest work. This includes the Oscar-winning Tsotsi and the grand finale of Cobrizi .
Presley's journey began in Mafikeng, where he first stepped onto the stage at age ten. His star exploded onto the world scene in 2005 with Tsotsi, a film that would make history.
'Presley Chweneyagae's performance in Tsotsi remains one of the most iconic portrayals in African cinema,' said the National Film and Video Foundation.
The film, based on Athol Fugard's novel, follows a young man's struggle for survival in Johannesburg's townships.
It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, a first for South Africa. The award turned Presley into a household name, according to Showmax Stories.
But Presley was never content with just one triumph, as he returned home, where he poured his heart into theatre, television, and film.
Presley Chweneyagae dazzled in classics like Hamlet and Julius Caesar , co-authored the acclaimed play Relativity, and directed the award-winning Cell No. 4.
Yet, it was his role as Cobra on The River that made him a fixture in South African living rooms.
'He was every mother's son, every girl's funny lover, and everyone's best friend,' said Nomsa Philiso, CEO of General Entertainment at MultiChoice.
Presley's portrayal of Cobra was so beloved, it spawned the spin-off Cobrizi. The series, gritty and full of heart, saw Presley shine both in front of the camera and behind it as Executive Producer.
'He didn't just entertain—he made us laugh, made us care, and helped us understand the people behind the stories,' Philiso added.
This weekend, fans can relive Presley's greatest moments. Tsotsi airs on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 9 pm on 6 June, and streams on Showmax and DStv Stream.
It returns to Mzansi Magic on Saturday, 7 June at 8 pm, and to M-Net Movies 4 on 15 June at 8 pm.
Mzansi Bioskop celebrates his legacy with Zama Zama (9 June), and State of Violence (10 June).
iNumber Number (11 June), and Tsotsi again on 12 June will all air at 9pm. The Cobrizi finale airs Sunday, 8 June at 8 pm on Mzansi Magic.
'Presley was a friend, a mentor, a beacon of creativity and perseverance,' said his management agency, MLA.
South Africa has lost a legend, but his stories and spirit will live on. Robala ka kagiso, Presley Chweneyagae. Your legacy is forever engraved in our hearts and screens.

Tyla hosts and wins big at 2025 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards

South African global music star Tyla made her mark at the 2025 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards (KCAs), hosting the high-profile event at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and taking home the award for Favourite Global Music Star, representing Africa. The awards show is known for its energetic atmosphere and green slime antics. Tyla opened the night with a lively Best of Summer dance celebration featuring the hottest tracks of the season, DJ'd by Benny Blanco and supported by an ensemble of dancers — including a surprise appearance by Smurfette. This was the 23 year-old singer and fashion icon's first time hosting a major international awards show. Speaking ahead of the event, she described it as a 'full circle moment', having auditioned for Nickelodeon as a child. 'It's crazy how things come around. I just hope I only get a little drizzle of slime,' she laughed. That wish didn't quite pan out — she ended the night soaked, along with fellow presenters Jack Griffo and pop group KATSEYE. Her win in the Favourite Global Music Star (Africa) category was announced midway through the show. Accepting the award, Tyla said: 'This means the world to me — to represent Africa on a global stage and be recognised by all of you amazing kids out there ... wow. Thank you for believing in me and dancing with me. Africa to the world!'

Designer on a mission to redefine African Print

Nhlakanipho Masuku (30), an emerging designer, is on a mission to change perceptions of African print through his brand, Sheshu Xabange – which means 'Think Fast'. Nhlakanipho learnt the art of sewing from his mother, who taught him to create garments from scratch. This early exposure ignited a passion for design that has stayed with him ever since. After matriculating from Allen Glen High School, he decided to pursue his passion and launched Sheshu Xabange in 2018. His journey is about more than creating striking garments – it is about empowerment and inspiring the next generation of fashion creatives. 'The name Sheshu Xabange is more of an inspirational term that encourages youngsters to stand firm and believe in themselves,' he says. 'Most of us associate African print with traditional weddings or ceremonies, but I wanted to change that perception and show it can be worn on the streets and look stylish.' As he honed his skills, Nhlakanipho began to see fashion as a tool for empowerment, particularly for young people. Sheshu Xabange draws inspiration from his personal experiences, including the loss of friends to substance abuse. 'I use it as therapy and a way to express myself. Some of my collections feature symbolic colours and detailing to represent the journey of healing and self-love. 'My collection includes jackets, skirts, shorts, blazers, and everything is unisex,' he adds. His brand has gained recognition on the fashion scene, with showcases at Soweto Fashion Week and Newton Fashion Week. He hopes to one day show his work at fashion weeks in New York, Paris and Milan. Through his brand, Nhlakanipho also aims to raise awareness of key issues affecting young people and to empower them through education, campaigns and community involvement. 'I want to use my brand to give back to the community and support the youth. Whether by teaching them sewing skills or involving them as models or marketers; I want to make a difference,' he says.
