Gold prices advance as Israel-Iran escalation fuels safe-haven bids

LONDON: Gold prices soared on Friday as investors flocked to safe-haven assets following Israeli air strikes on Iran, re-igniting fears of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
Spot gold rose 1.7% at $3,439.79 an ounce as of 0923 EDT (1323 GMT), coming within striking distance of its record high of $3,500.05 set in April. Prices gained more than 4% so far this week.
US gold futures added 1.7% to $3,461. 'Israel knocking out Iranian targets is causing a little bit of geopolitical scare in the market. Prices will stay elevated in the anticipation of what is to come, the retaliation by Iran,' said Daniel Pavilonis, senior market strategist at RJO Futures.
Israel launched a barrage of strikes across Iran on Friday, saying it had attacked nuclear facilities and missile factories and killed a swathe of military commanders in what could be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran building an atomic weapon.
US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran had brought the attack on itself by resisting a US ultimatum in talks to restrict its nuclear program. Softer US inflation prints earlier this week added extra shine to gold, bolstering expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
Bullion is widely regarded as a safe asset, especially during times of economic turmoil and geopolitical unrest. It also tends to thrive in a low interest rate environment.
Goldman Sachs reiterated its forecast that structurally strong central bank buying will raise the gold price to $3,700/toz by end-2025 and $4,000 by mid-2026. BofA sees a path for gold to rally to $4,000/oz over the next 12 months.
On the physical front, demand in major Asian hubs weakened this week as rates soared, with prices in India zooming past the psychologically important 100,000-rupee mark. Spot silver eased 0.3% at $36.24 per ounce, gaining nearly 1% for the week.
Platinum fell 3.9% to $1,244.91 and was up 6.3% for the week. Palladium fell 0.3% to $1,052.28 but added 0.7% so far this week.

OGRA directs oil companies to maintain 20-day reserves amid Iran-Israel conflict

Government officials and PSO have voiced concern over 'unfair competition' and the potential threat to G2G fuel supply deals. Photo: AFP Listen to article The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has directed all Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to maintain fuel reserves to ensure uninterrupted supply across the country amid evolving market conditions following the Iran-Israel conflict. In a statement issued on Saturday, OGRA spokesperson Imran Ghaznavi said all OMCs have been instructed to maintain the mandatory 20-day fuel reserves as required under their licensing terms. "OGRA further emphasises that companies must fully comply with these conditions to ensure smooth fuel supply nationwide," the statement said. Ghaznavi added that Pakistan currently has sufficient petroleum reserves to meet domestic demand. "There are adequate petroleum stocks in the country to meet present consumption levels. OGRA is actively monitoring the situation and ensuring strict oversight to uphold national energy security," he said. He further noted that proactive steps are being taken to address future energy requirements and respond to shifting market dynamics. "OGRA remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted energy supply and strengthening national energy security," Ghaznavi affirmed. Iran–Israel Conflict The recent conflict between Iran and Israel has escalated into the most intense direct confrontation in their history, as both countries exchange large-scale strikes. PIA brings 121 nationals from Iran

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) successfully completed its second special rescue flight on Friday, bringing 121 Pakistani nationals safely home from Iran via Azerbaijan's capital city Baku. According to PIA spokesman, the special flight PK-7160 landed at Lahore airport at 3:40 PM, carrying passengers who had been stranded in Iran due to recent airspace restrictions that affected normal flight operations. Due to the closure of Iranian airspace, the stranded Pakistani citizens were required to travel overland to Baku, Azerbaijan, where they boarded the PIA rescue flight for their journey home to Pakistan. The complex evacuation operation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of Pakistani diplomatic missions in both Iran and Azerbaijan, who played crucial roles in facilitating the safe passage of citizens to the departure point in Baku. The special flight was dispatched on direct instructions from the Government of Pakistan, demonstrating the state's commitment to ensuring the welfare of its citizens abroad during challenging circumstances, he said. Qatar holds talks with energy companies

DOHA/LONDON: Qatar held crisis talks this week with energy majors after Israeli strikes on Iran's huge gas field, which it shares with Qatar, an industry source and a diplomat in the region told Reuters. Saad Al Kaabi, CEO of state-owned QatarEnergy and the Gulf Arab state's energy minister, urged companies to warn the US, Britain and European governments about the risks the conflict poses to gas exports from Qatar and the increasing threat to the global gas supply, they said. An interruption to Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) operation could cut off around 20% of the global supply, which Doha exports from the world's largest gas reservoir. 'QatarEnergy is making sure that foreign governments are fully aware of the implications and repercussions the situation and further escalation pose to gas production from Qatar,' said the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. QatarEnergy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kaabi also met this week in Doha with ambassadors representing countries whose companies are involved in QatarEnergy's North Field expansion project, the diplomat said. US majors ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, Britain's Shell, Italy's Eni and France's TotalEnergies all have stakes in the expansion, which is set to boost exports from Qatar by around 82% in the coming years. Qatar currently produces 77 million tonnes of liquefied gas a year. So far, there have been no disruptions to QatarEnergy's exports, and cargo deliveries are on schedule. Israel began attacking Iran last Friday, saying its longtime enemy was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. Iran, which says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes, retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Israel.
