The Red Devils icon managed just five wins in 25 games over a seven-month period.
And it marked another underwhelming dugout performance following spells at Derby, DC United and Birmingham.
Rooney has since enjoyed spending time as a pundit, working on Amazon Prime while featuring on the Stick to Football podcast.
He also captained and managed England at Soccer Aid earlier this month, scoring the fastest goal in the charity match's history before ex-United teammate Carlos Tevez banged in four to hand victory to a World XI.
However, Rooney is now truly back in the beautiful game after landing a new job.
But it is not another managerial stint for England's former captain.
Instead, Rooney has linked up with a luxury training camp for children called Football Escapes.
The company organises half-term retreats for kids and their parents in exotic locations like Cyprus, Portugal and the Maldives.
The children get to spend their time playing football and learning from legends like Rooney.
While parents have plenty of free time to rest and relax by the pool.

Now, Rooney will get his boots back on for an October retreat to Dubai, having previously worked for them during an event in February.
He will teach aspiring youngsters the ropes alongside a fellow Premier League icon in ex-Tottenham and England defender Michael Dawson.
But training with Rooney doesn't come cheap.
Football Escapes are advertising a seven-day stay for a family of four at the 5-star Jumeirah Beach Hotel for £8499 on their website – and that's BEFORE flights.
A statement read: 'By popular demand, Wayne Rooney will be returning to Dubai, alongside Michael Dawson, for a week of Football Escapes magic this October Half Term, 20th - 24th October 2025.
'The kids will train daily, in their personalised kit, with our ambassadors and UEFA-qualified coaches, building their confidence and their skills with coaching from none other than Wayne Rooney.
'Including daily coaching from Wayne Rooney, a signed shirt, our incredible Parents' Match, a medals ceremony to round off the week, and of course a stay for you and your family at the world class Jumeirah Beach Hotel Resort in Dubai.'

Napoli make move for second Man Utd star after getting Jadon Sancho green light

Antonio Conte's squad could be boosted by yet another former Manchester United player with Rasmus Hojlund being talked up as a new frontman for the Serie A champions Napoli are keen on bringing Rasmus Hojlund back to Serie A with the Manchester United flop allowed to leave Old Trafford. The Italian champions have already added Kevin De Bruyne as a free agent and have reportedly agreed personal terms with United winger Jadon Sancho, after Chelsea paid £5m not to sign him permanently following an unimpressive season on loan at Stamford Bridge. ‌ Gazzetta dello Sport say Napoli are keen on Hojlund, who made a name for himself when leading the line for Atalanta before heading to United. But after two seasons of struggle, his future under Ruben Amorim appears bleak. ‌ There is, however, a familiar issue - the finances of completing a deal. United signed Hojlund for £72m and he has three years remaining on his deal. They are also keen to maximise the funds raised by sales this summer so Amorim's squad can receive the major surgery it requires following their dismal campaign. Almost the entire squad is available for the right price - with only Bruno Fernandes appearing certain to remain having turned down a move to Saudi Arabia. Beyond Hojlund and Sancho, Marcus Rashford is expected to leave and Alejandro Garancho could also exit Reports immediately after the Europa League final suggested that the Argentina attacker was told he could leave. But he still went on a money-spinning post-season tour in Asia and there have been crickets since. He is one of few players who could earn a considerable fee, which also means he is one of few players with the natural ability to shine in a successful United side. Matheus Cunha has already signed from Wolves in a £62.5m deal and United have been linked extensively with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, who is also being talked up as a potential signing for Tottenham Hotspur after his former head coach Thomas Frank last week made the move from west to north London. Napoli have been linked with a host of players since landing another Serie A title having already added Kevin De Bruyne as a free agent from Manchester City. His former team-mate Jack Grealish is also being talked up as a target, potentially joining a squad already featuring Scottish midfielders Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour.

Man Utd target Real Madrid star as Ramsus Hojlund transfer twist emerges

Manchester United made a fast start to the summer transfer window by signing Matheus Cunha for £62.5million, but the Red Devils have found it more difficult in pursuing their next targets Manchester United fans are having to be patient for their next signing, with Matheus Cunha's arrival yet to be followed up. The Red Devils triggered the Brazilian's £62.5million release clause to bring him in from Wolves and quickly turned their attention to Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. But acquiring Mbeumo has proven more difficult. Brentford are demanding at least £60m for the Cameroon international, who's already indicated that he wants to join United over other potential suitors. ‌ Old Trafford chiefs are reluctant to pay that amount given that they haven't been able to sanction a big sale so far this summer. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho could all bring in significant funds, but finding buyers for the attacking quartet is no easy task. ‌ Ruben Amorim's focus isn't just on Mbeumo either, with the Red Devils' goalkeeping situation uncertain. Emiliano Martinez is claimed to be United's priority but Amorim and Co. have alterantives who could challenge Andre Onana for the No.1 spot - or even replace him. Here's a round-up of the latest transfer news from Old Trafford. Real Madrid star targeted Manchester United have identified Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin as an alternative to top target Emiliano Martinez, according to reports in Spain. United know that Aston Villa star Martinez has offers from Saudi Arabia, so the Red Devils are making contingency plans. As reported by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, United have spoken to Lunin's agent, Jorge Mendes, about a deal for the 26-year-old. But they only want to pay £13m, a far cry from Real's asking price of around £20m. Should Manchester United sign Andriy Lunin? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Hojlund twist emerges Napoli have reportedly joined Italian rivals Inter Milan in the race to sign Rasmus Hojlund. Inter were installed as the favourites to sign Hojlund, 22, earlier this month but now Napoli are claimed to have held talks. Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport say that discussions between the newly-crowned Serie A champions and the United striker's representatives were positive. Antonio Conte is looking to bolster his forward line with already includes a former Red Devil in Romelu Lukaku. ‌ Chelsea join Kolo Muani race Chelsea are said to joined the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani, who United have previously considered. Kolo Muani, 26, was a target for the Red Devils under Erik ten Hag in 2023 before they looked at him again in January. The France international ultimately joined Juventus on loan, who are rivalling Chelsea for his signature. French publication L'Equipe report that the Blues have entered negotiations with PSG over a deal.

Man Utd urged to complete shock transfer for 'physical' Premier League star

Manchester United have been urged to sign 'physical' Premier League star Beto from Everton this summer in what would be a shock move. United head coach Ruben Amorim is keen for a new-look strike force at Old Trafford with the Red Devils linked to a number of attacking players. Matheus Cunha has already joined United from Wolves and Amorim is reportedly keen to recruit Viktor Gyokeres from his old club Sporting CP. But Fernando Lopes is convinced that Beto would be a better choice for United, despite the striker scoring just 15 goals in 71 games for Everton. Lopes, the president of Portuguese club Uniao Tires, where Beto started his career, told The Sun: 'Everyone thought Amorim would sign Gyokeres as he had him at Sporting – but the Premier League is completely different to Portugal. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. 'Teams are more physical and compact at the back, it is quicker and more competitive. 'Gyokeres would struggle to play as a lone No. 9 waiting for service. 'Beto's a more physical player, who fights with defenders and doesn't lose duels. 'He is a real headache for opponents – if he gets the service. 'In their golden era, United always scored a lot of goals from set-pieces but haven't had a proper striker for many seasons. 'Nowadays, teams have small, quick strikers or a false forward because there is an obsession for possession of the ball. 'Beto represents the typical old style, because of his physique, power and work-rate – plus he is very fast. 'When [David] Moyes went to Everton he showed what a handful he is for defenders to stop. 'He'd be like Amorim's ace up his sleeve in a game of poker.' More Trending Everton paid around €30m (£25.8m) to sign Beto from Italian club Udinese in the summer of 2023. The 27-year-old Guinea-Bissau international scored eight Premier League goals across 30 top-flight games in the 2024-25 campaign. Beto is currently under contract at Everton until the summer of 2027. 'One of Beto's attributes is the fighting spirit first injected at Tires,' Lopes added. 'He has had the attitude of never giving up since he was a boy. I'd love to see him in a more attacking team because if he has the service, he will definitely score around 20.'
