Auto parts makers are battling EV to tariff threats. They may have found the next big thing

For auto component makers facing risks from the rise of electric vehicles and looming US tariffs, a new potential market is emerging: humanoid robots.
Manufacturers of engine components and transmissions to brake assemblies can diversify into making parts for robots that look and function like humans.
'There are companies which have already started making humanoid robots," said Rohit Nanda, group chief financial Officer at Sona Comstar, which announced its foray into the segment on 30 April. 'About 50% of the bill of materials of such robots are products which we make for other applications like motors, drives, gears,etc."

The use of robots in scientific research to factories is expected to explode over the next decade. The Indian Space Research Organisation has developed a humanoid robot, Vyommitra, which will fly into space as part of the test launches for the Gaganyaan mission. Goldman Sachs expects theglobalmarket for humanoids to grow to $38 billion by 2035.
China dominates
The supply chain is dominated by Chinese players, who could be challenged, Nanda of Sona Comstar told Mint. 'We need to learn how to make these for a different use case. Our engineers will work with potential customers to develop these capabilities."
The key to the growth of the humanoid robots market is making components cheaper, according to Jacqueline Du, head of China industrial technology research at Goldman Sachs. This is where the Indian auto component makers can help with large-scale production at lower costs.
'Players involved in the auto component manufacturing industry have perfected the cost model for the parts," said Prateek Jain, cofounder and chief operating officer at Addverb Technologies, a robotics company. 'They make many of the products, including gears and motors, which are critical in the production of robots."

According to Jain, a single humanoid can have 42-50 actuators or a complex system of parts that convert energy into physical motion. 'We need the precision, quality, scale and cost, which can be provided by auto parts players to develop the humanoid robot ecosystem in India."
Sona Comstar estimates that 10 million humanoid robots are expected to be deployed by 2035.
This story will unfold in the next 5-10 years, CFO Nanda said. 'This doesn't come in a big way into revenue in the next 2 to 3 years. Initial investments will be in the engineering team. Once we understand the opportunity, then we can invest in setting up a manufacturing facility."
Mitigating global risks
The bet on making parts for humanoid robots is part of a diversification effort by an industry prone to cyclical slowdowns because of its global exposure. In the year through March 2024, auto component players exported parts worth $21 billion, with nearly a third of it coming from the US. Donald Trump's tariff threat is a big concern for the sector.
'We identify three key risks for auto ancillary players—USMCA/tariffs, EU weakness and Chinese competition, and EVs – given the industry's export reliance on US/EU and good salience of engine components," analysts at Ambit Institutional Equities wrote in a 25 April note.
Targeting robots as a new market is also seen as a prudent bet for auto parts makers because it's still nascent and scale is not expected anytime soon.

The pursuit of leading auto component players to diversify into areas like electronics, robot part manufacturing, aerospace and defence will continue to intensify as these players will look to find new avenues of growth and expand margins, according to Jugnu Sakuja, managing director at consultancy firm Alvarez & Marsal. 'Such moves take time to materialise due to the need for technical capabilities, reliability and testing requirements as well as certifications."
Jefferies analysts Nitij Mangal, Sagar Sahu and Kevin Verghese, in a 9 March note, said that rising electronics manufacturing in the country has opened doors for auto parts players to diversify. 'We believe more firms may expand into electronics, which may potentially lift growth outlook and multiples," they wrote.

'Why don't you come back home?' That was your offer." However, Parekh said he declined the offer, saying 'it won't be fair or proper with our name and the bank and all". He also said the HDFC Bank-HDFC reverse merger, which was completed in July 2023, was primarily driven by regulatory pressure. 'The RBI supported us and they pushed us into it to some extent and they helped us…there were no concessions, no relief, no time, nothing but they helped us to go through the process and get the approval," Parekh said. On the reverse merger, Parekh called it 'a sad day and a happy day". He added, 'It's good for the institution. It's good for the country to have large banks. Look at how large Chinese banks are. We have to be bigger, larger in India." Describing the merger as good for the institution, he said, it is good for the country to have large banks. Indian banks must grow through acquisitions to become stronger in future, he added. HDFC Ltd, the parent entity of HDFC Bank, merged with its banking subsidiary to create the country's biggest private sector lender. The merger became effective from July 1, 2023. With the reverse merger, the 44-year-old institution HDFC Ltd faded into memory lane. Interestingly, the creation of HDFC Ltd was financially supported by erstwhile ICICI Ltd, the parent entity of ICICI Bank. The Reserve Bank of India had classified large NBFCs like HDFC, which then held assets exceeding Rs 5 lakh crore, as systemically important — well above the Rs 50,000-crore threshold. Are foreign university campuses in India truly beneficial?

Every year, thousands of Indian students pursue higher education abroad, with the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia being among the top choices. According to data from the Ministry of Education, the number of Indian students studying overseas increased by 52.2% over five years; from 586,337 in 2019 to 892,989 in 2023. This is due to several factors: the perception of receiving a globally recognised, high-quality education at top-ranked universities; access to cutting-edge research facilities; improved career prospects; international exposure; better job opportunities and higher salaries; a superior quality of life; and relatively smoother immigration processes. Studies indicate that over 75% of Indian students who study abroad intend to work and settle in their host countries, with only a small fraction planning to return to India. This suggests that such students have already considered critical questions such as: What are the advantages of earning a degree from a foreign university? What career opportunities will it open up? New questions Now, with some foreign universities setting up campuses in India, aspiring students are beginning to ask a new set of questions: What are the benefits of earning a degree from an international university's Indian campus? Is it as valuable as studying at the main campus abroad? Will it offer the same academic experience and career prospects? The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 supports the establishment of independent campuses by foreign universities in India and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently announced that 15 international universities will set up campuses in the country during the current academic year. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already issued Letters of Intent (LoI) to some institutions, including the University of Liverpool and to the University of Aberdeen to set up branch campuses in Bangalore and Mumbai respectively. According to the specified guidelines, foreign universities seeking entry into India must rank among the top 500 globally, demonstrate subject-specific expertise, and be duly recognised in their home countries to offer academic and research programmes. They will have autonomy in designing their curriculum, managing admissions, setting fee structures and are authorised to award internationally recognised degrees. Foreign universities stand to gain significantly by entering the Indian education sector as they can expand their global footprint, enjoy academic and administrative autonomy, and offer international degrees within India. The presence of top-ranked foreign university campuses in India is also expected to bring several advantages to the country. It can introduce world-class education; help raise domestic academic standards to global levels and promote knowledge exchange. Participation in conferences organised by these institutions can provide Indian scholars with valuable exposure and enriching learning experiences. Moreover, Indian students will be able to earn foreign degrees without going abroad, thereby helping retain talent within the country. Local needs and priorities But one must also ask: who are the actual beneficiaries? Will these branch campuses cater exclusively to the elite? Will academically gifted students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds have an opportunity to gain admission? In a country where millions of young people struggle to access higher education — or are unable to pursue it due to financial constraints — this initiative risks neglecting local needs and priorities. With regard to bringing world-class education to India, any foreign university setting up a campus here is primarily driven by monetary interests, and the focus is likely to be on profit rather than academic excellence. This opens the door to the commercialisation of education, reducing it to a commodity rather than upholding it as a service. Foreign university branch campuses in India risk becoming symbols of elitism rather than instruments of equality or social justice. A truly vibrant campus is one that embraces equality, upholds social justice, and celebrates diversity and inclusiveness. On a typical Indian campus, students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds come together, interact, and learn from one another. This environment helps everyone become sensitive to the needs of one another and empathetic. A foreign campus in India is unlikely to foster or reflect this kind of inclusive environment. Introducing foreign university campuses should lead to reforms in the education sector, not widen inequality. It is misguided to claim that graduates from foreign university campuses in India will help reduce brain drain. On the contrary, a degree from a foreign university can serve as a stepping stone and increase the chances for those who aspire to work abroad. If the purpose of inviting foreign universities to set up branch campuses in India is to bring world-class education, develop global citizens, and transform the country into a 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) by 2047, the focus must be on addressing local needs, particularly by enabling economically and socially disadvantaged groups to access higher education and by improving the overall quality of education. Weeks before top BRICS leaders converge in Rio de Janeiro for summit talks, envoys of leading member nations of the grouping hinted that it could focus on greater use of national currencies for trade in the face of uncertainties over Trump administration's aggressive policy on tariff. Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov reaffirmed Moscow's strong support for trade in local currency among BRICS member nations and described the grouping as 'a serious platform for discussing joint soluti'ons to big challenges'. The summit is unlikely to make any significant progress on the proposed BRICS currency as it will need significant structural changes and reforms. In the last few months, President Donald Trump has cautioned BRICS member nations against rolling out a BRICS currency to replace the US dollar. 'BRICS is not a counter-bloc. It is a centre of gravity for countries seeking mutual respect and non-interference,' Alipov said at a conference titled 'BRICS in Rio: Shaping an Inclusive and Sustainable World Order' that was co-organised by the Embassy of Brazil in India and Centre for Global India Insights (CGII), a leading think tank focused on global affairs. The 17th BRICS ((Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7. Brazil is hosting the summit in its capacity as the chair of the influential bloc. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and several other leaders of the member nations of the grouping are expected to attend the summit. Enhancing the use of national currencies in settling intra-BRICS trade figured prominently in discussions, with all panellists backing the proposal, which is already being implemented by BRICS countries. However, the panellists found the idea of a BRICS common currency impractical. Besides Alipov, India's BRICS sherpa and Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Dammu Ravi, Brazil's Ambassador to India Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nobrega, Indonesia Ambassador Ina Hagniningtyas Krisnamurthi and Egypt's envoy Kamel Zayed Kamel Galal attended the conference. In his remarks, Ravi clarified that discussions around a BRICS common currency are still at a very early stage. 'Today, for now, we are only looking at trade settlement in national currencies. Harmonisation of fiscal and monetary policies is very, very difficult to achieve, he said. Nobrega and Ravi both reiterated that a common currency would require far deeper policy harmonisation -- something the EU struggled with despite far more economic alignment.
