Lime use key to improving water quality, says Teagasc director

Spreading lime will play a big role in improving water quality, said Teagasc director of research Professor Pat Dillon in a recent podcast.
He explained soil fertility was an important objective of Teagasc's Better Farming for Water campaign.
The campaign calls for optimal lime, phosphorus and potassium in soils. But analysis of soil samples submitted in 2024 showed 52% had sub-optimal pH. Increasing soil pH to greater than 6.2 will increase phosphorus availability, increase nitrogen use efficiency, and be really important for clover establishment.
'If there's something we need to focus on as part of the programme, I think the big one there is about soil pH,' Prof Dillon said.
'Lime is a very cheap fertiliser. It can have significant impacts, and it's really important where we want to move in terms of water quality and in terms of climate change'.
The Better Farming for Water campaign was launched last year to support and accelerate actions on farms which improve the quality of water where agriculture is a significant pressure on "good" or "high" ecological status.
Agriculture is a key risk factor in 1,023 (62%) of the 1,649 water bodies designated with "at risk" status.
There are eight Better Farming for Water actions for change. 'Farmers need support to implement these actions for change at farm level,' Prof Dillon said.
Action one is the reduction of the surplus per hectare of purchased nitrogen and phosphorus fertiliser. Comparing 2018 with 2024, chemical nitrogen sales reduced by 24%, phosphorus sales by 38%, and potash sales by 27%. Research at Moorepark shows nitrates leaching from dairy farms has reduced in the period 2019 to 2023.
'Nitrogen balance improved on these farms, with the result that nitrogen leaching reduced,' Prof Dillon said.
Action two is using lime to raise the soil pH above 6.2, so less fertiliser is needed.
Action three is ensuring fertiliser and organic manure are applied at appropriate times and conditions. 'The right time, the right rate, and in the right place, that's really important,' Prof Dillon said.
He advised farmers to be guided by Teagasc's weekly Grass 10 newsletter, which facilitates precision nutrient management. The AgNav platform can also be used to support a reduction in the farm nitrogen balance. PastureBase Ireland can also be used to improve nutrient use efficiency. Greater use of organic manure is another way to reduce chemical nitrogen usage.
Action four is ensuring sufficient storage for slurry and soiled water. Teagasc surveys estimate there is a requirement of 20% additional storage capacity, needed for dairy farms in particular.
'Increasing slurry storage really is important, especially from the dairy farmer's point of view, improving nutrient efficiency and thereby improving water quality,' Prof Dillon said. He encouraged farmers to use the available grants to upgrade their nutrient storage facilities.
Action five is managing and minimising nutrient loss from farmyards and roadways. Preliminary findings of Teagasc's national slurry monitoring surveys indicate 20 to 40 litres of water per cow per week enters slurry storage tanks.
Pollution from farmyards and roadways can be a significant source of nutrients and sediment in waterways.
'We need better gutters and downpipes in good working order, to pipe water directly to soakaways, and not mixing with dirty water on the farm.
"We need to divert clean water away from yards and concrete areas. We need to restrict the farm traffic to certain parts of the yard,' Prof Dillon advised.
Regular cleaning of soiled yards is crucial too. 'Simple actions can have significant benefits in terms of improving water quality,' he said.
Action six is fencing off watercourses to prevent cattle access.
Action seven promotes targeted use of riparian margins, buffer strips, and sediment traps to mitigate nutrient and sediment loss to water.
Action eight is maintaining over-winter green cover to reduce nutrient leaching, especially of nitrates, from tillage soils. 'Cover crops can reduce nitrogen loss by 20 kilos per hectare,' Prof Dillon explained.
He said, 'All of those eight actions are a priority'.
A specific plan for each of the eight river catchments selected for priority water quality improvement is the preferred Better Farming for Water approach.
Coordinators have been appointed to work in the selected catchments, to organise the efforts of all relevant stakeholders, including farmers, agricultural cooperatives, industry representatives, local authorities, and other relevant organisations, and to put in place a comprehensive, tailored plan to improve water quality in each catchment area.
A farmer is the preferred chairperson of each catchment coordinating committee.
Encouragingly, the EPA's March 2025 Early Insights Nitrogen Indicator showed nitrogen levels in rivers had reduced in 2024 compared to the previous year. However, nitrogen levels remained too high in the southeast of the country.
The effort in Munster has a head start, compared to the national picture from Environmental Protection Agency monitoring, which indicates only 54% of Irish water bodies are deemed to have good or high ecological status.
Prof Dillon said 67% of the water bodies on the Bandon River are "either high or good". This figure is 62% for the Lee catchment area and 66% for the Blackwater.
But only 36% of the water bodies on the Suir and on the Barrow are high or good, and only 32% on the Boyne.

CalfCare 2025 roadshow expands to summer nights

The CalfCare roadshow has added four summer dates to its traditional New Year schedule. The collaborative roadshow between Animal Health Ireland (AHI) and Teagasc's DairyBeef 500 campaign promotes calf care and the potential of beef production from the dairy herd. With the support of Volac Milk Replacers Ireland Ltd's Feed For Growth initiative, the Summer Event series will provide farmers with expert knowledge on calf rearing and the maintenance of mid-season animal health. The roadshow will run over four consecutive nights from June 23 to June 26, being hosted in farms in Donegal, Tipperary, Carlow, and Westmeath. The farm roadshows plan to showcase how to maintain recommended average daily gain to achieve optimal performance, mid-season grass management, and achieving good silage quality. An educational segment on what famers should know about parasite control at grass and in advance of housing and the key health tasks to avoid a growth check in your cattle will also be held. These events are all scheduled to start at 7pm at the following farms: June 23, Gareth Peoples (Tullyannon, Carrigans, Co Donegal, F93 HK20); June 24, Tipperary Calf to Beef Demonstration Farm (Fethard, Co Tipperary, E91 E0X3); June 25, ABP Demo Farm (Clonegal, Co Carlow, Y21 R884); June 26, Irvine Allen (Williamstown, Co Westmeath, N37 T327). 'This addition to our CalfCare series will deliver the latest information and advice on boosting animal performance, discuss the significance of quality silage, up-to-date health checks on your herd, and what farmers need to prioritise across the board,' said AHI CalfCare Programme Manager, Michelle McGrath. Met Éireann issues nationwide advisory for potato blight

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow advisory for potato blight over the coming days across the country. The national forecaster said that conditions conductive to the spread of blight will develop nationwide on Thursday and Friday (June 12-13). Met Éireann advised growers that there will be opportunities for spraying today (Wednesday, June 11). Blight Potato blight, caused by the pathogen Phytophthora infestans, poses a significant threat to potato crops in Ireland and globally. Despite recent advances in fungicides, improved varieties and better disease forecasting, Teagasc said that there is still no means of eradicating an outbreak in a crop. Therefore, disease prevention is key. Weather conditions which favour the spread of the disease occur when temperatures rise above 10°C and relative humidity rises above 95%. The typical mild, damp Irish summer can provide the ideal conditions for the spread of the disease. Teagasc has estimated that some €5 million is spent annually on fungicides in Ireland to mitigate against the disease. Met Éireann Met Éireann has said that during the coming week there will be unsettled weather across the country, with rain and showers at times. Some of the showers will be heavy and with a likelihood of thunderstorms developing, particularly in the next few days. Rainfall amounts are expected to be close to or above average in most areas, and one and a half to twice the average in parts of the east, midlands and north. Mean temperatures are expected to be close to average in the south and west, and a degree above normal values in the east and north of the country. Soil temperatures are expected to rise a little over the coming seven days. Soil moisture deficits are generally between 0mm and +45mm with the driest soils in the south. However, Met Éireann noted that most soils in the north midlands are very close to saturation. Soil moisture deficits will continue to decrease in the coming week.

Tillage: Irish wheat crops and the threat of yellow rust

The jury is still out on whether or not wheat crops grown in Ireland this year have succumbed to a yellow rust genetic breakdown, as seems to have been the case in the UK. According to Teagasc tillage specialist, Shay Phelan: 'The yellow rust issue is being investigated at the present time. 'Whatever the outcome of the work, it seems safe to conclude that the growing of wheat will become a more expensive operation into the future.' Meanwhile, the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) in the UK is advising farmers not to rely on the current yellow rust disease resistance information published in the organisation's recommended list (RL) information sheets. Unusual activity was first seen in late March in an RL fungicide-untreated trial near Sunderland in the north-east of England. At this site, several varieties had yellow rust symptoms despite being classified as resistant to the disease at the young plant stage on the RL (2025/26). Paul Gosling, who manages the RL at AHDB, said: 'Following discussions with plant breeders, we suspected that an important yellow rust resistance gene – Yr15 – had potentially been overcome. 'We subsequently observed similar resistance-breakdown patterns more widely in RL trials, starting in southern Scotland before spreading down the eastern coast of England, down as far as East Anglia.' Trial operators sent diseased leaf samples from the affected RL trial sites near Sunderland and Berwick-upon-Tweed for analysis by the AHDB-funded UK Cereal Pathogen Virulence Survey. The National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB)-led service confirmed that Yr15 gene had failed. Pathogen isolates from these samples not only infected a test variety known to carry the Yr15 resistance gene but went on to sporulate profusely. NIAB-funded work using molecular markers also confirmed the presence of the Yr15 gene in several of the varieties impacted at the young-plant stage. The initial tests prioritised testing of varieties with a strong level of adult plant stage resistance (disease rating 8 or 9), according to RL 2025/26. These tests found that the Hard Group 4 varieties KWS Dawsum, LG Typhoon and Champion carry the Yr15 gene. NIAB is currently testing a wider range of varieties, with further genetic screening also being done by the John Innes Centre in Norwich and the Global Rust Reference Centre in Denmark. The Yr15 resistance gene, which was discovered in the 1980s, confers broad-spectrum resistance against genetically diverse yellow rust isolates (from a large worldwide collection of more than 3,000) and was an important line of defence. Gosling added: 'Adult plant resistance has clearly taken a knock, but the full impact will depend on a myriad of other resistance genes, which vary from variety to variety. 'Some varieties appear to be fighting back, whereas others are recording unusually high disease levels.' 'Although we have not seen the unusual symptoms towards the south or the west, it appears to be spreading fast. 'No doubt it will impact on variety choice and disease management across the UK next season.'
