The family of a teenager who was hit by a 12-year-old on Saturday has shared their heartbreak.
The 12-year-old was behind the wheel when he disobeyed a stop sign, hitting 14-year-old Malcolm Booyens and driving into a nearby fence in Brakpan, Gauteng.
According to The Citizen's sister paper, Brakpan Herald, family and friends of Malcolm held a heart-warming vigil on Sunday afternoon.
Community members wrote touching messages on a large wooden cross and laid flowers in Booysen's memory.
The 14-year-old's grandfather, André Booysens, said the family is still in shock and trying to make sense of the tragic event that claimed Malcolm's life.
'White car flying past'
Speaking to the Sowetan, Malcolm's father, Quinton Booysens, said the 12-year-old's mother had visited him, claiming that the boy was not given permission to drive the vehicle.
'But no matter what she says or does, it won't bring Malcolm back,' Booysens noted.
He said Malcolm was killed as the pair were out together, with Malcolm skating ahead of him.
'As I turned the corner, I saw a white car (Mazda) flying past the stop sign. A loud bang followed. I rushed ahead and saw [Malcolm's] skateboard first, then him lying on the pavement,' Booysens recounted.

Declared dead on the scene
At arrival, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department found the teenager's lifeless body, and paramedics declared him dead on the scene.
According to the city's spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the 12-year-old was taken into custody and later released to his parents.
'The suspect is expected to appear before the Brakpan magistrate's court soon,' he said.

A tense search for a four-year-old boy kidnapped during a hijacking on Wednesday evening ended in a happy reunion. Brakpan Herald reports that with help from local security teams and CPF patrollers, Brakpan police officers found the child unharmed. Local SAPS rural safety and sector managers Sergeant Phatudi Mashifane and Constable Zunaid Rustoff were patrolling along the R23 (Heidelberg Road), a notorious hijacking hotspot, when at around 23:00, they came across a family that had been hijacked and kidnapped by three armed men in Kempton Park. The couple had been left stranded in their vehicle. 'They told the SAPS members that the men left them inside their hijacked VW Polo GTI after the vehicle ran out of petrol on the R23 towards Tsakani, not far from a petrol station,' says Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer. 'The couple was frantic. They informed the officers that one of the hijackers had left with their four-year-old boy. 'The two SAPS members called for backup and started searching the area for the missing child and suspects. 'While searching, the SAPS members and personnel from private security companies were calling out for the child with hope that the child would respond if he heard them. 'The boy responded to one officer's voice, and he was found in the wet and icy bushes alone and unharmed.' The child was reunited with his parents, and the search continued for the suspects. With the assistance of a drone, the suspect who left with the child was located in the bushes near Dalpark Ext 1. 'The victims positively identified the suspect as the one who left with the boy. The 28-year-old was immediately arrested and detained at the Brakpan Police Station, charged with hijacking and kidnapping.' He was expected to appear in court within 48 hours. Brakpan SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo applauded the outstanding rescue efforts of the police members, the CPF patrollers and private security companies. He further commended the officers for their dedication and vigilance, and their efforts to combat crime. The security companies involved were Secure Tech Security, CP Security and Graphite Security. Village residents living in fear of criminals
Violent crime has gripped Malamulele, where residents fear for their lives as armed criminals continue to terrorise homes and families. Residents of Malamulele near Giyani in Limpopo are living in fear of gun-wielding criminals who attack them in their homes. Recently, community members protested and accused the police of not doing enough to arrest the criminals, who recently shot and killed a 20-year-old young man and raped his 17-year-old sister in Malamulele Extension B. They fled the scene with stolen property including a cellphone, laptop, chainsaw, TV, bicycle and grinder collectively valued at R36 300. Many more housebreakings in Malamulele Authorities said there were many more housebreaking cases reported in the area. Yesterday, Limpopo police provincial commissioner LieutenantGeneral Thembi Hadebe, together with transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye, visited the area to assess the progress made so far in the fight against crime. 'Crime-related incidents prompted the deployment of multidisciplinary forces in the area to stabilise the situation. The area has experienced a spate of violent crime, including house robberies and other violent incidents in which several homes were targeted,' Hadebe said. 'We are appealing to the community members to join the police as reservists and to be part of the CPF,' he said. Residents under siege Hadebe said the police were doing well to address the situation at Malamulele and neighbouring villages. Several residents who spoke to The Citizen confirmed that they were under siege and they were even afraid to go out on the street at night. 'Things are out of hand here, the crime rate in our area is too high and we are being attacked every day by armed criminals,' said a resident who asked not to be named. Naledi Pandor contniues to receive threats, 'they never stopped'
In February 2024, in the midst of South Africa's case against Israel at ICJ, Pandor's security was beefed up amid threats. As Israel and Iran continue to trade blows, South Africa's former International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor and her family continue to receive threats. An insider close to the family told The Citizen that the threats against Pandor and her family have not ceased since South Africa brought Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for genocide committed against Palestinians in Gaza. 'Threats' 'No, they never stopped. The threats are ongoing and you shouldn't get to close [to us] because you become a target,' the insider told The Citizen at a function in Gauteng. The insider did not want to disclose more information, fearing that the threats would escalate. 'We don't want our security compromised.' June 13, 2025 ICJ case In February 2024, in the midst of South Africa's case against Israel at the ICJ, Pandor's security was beefed up amid threats against her and her family. The minister did not disclose who the threats were from, but confirmed that then-Police Minister Bheki Cele had to strengthen her security detail. 'I spoke to Minister Cele because of the various messages I was getting, and I felt it would be better if we had extra security. What I am more concerned about is my family because in some of the social media messages, my children are mentioned and so on.' Gaza Pandor said, despite the personal cost of taking on Israel, South Africa will see the ICJ matter through. 'This is part of the course, the Israeli agents' intelligence services are how they behave, and they seek to intimidate you. So, we must not be intimidated; there is a course that is underway. The people of the world and of Palestine didn't draw back when the apartheid state was at its worst. 'They stood with the liberation movement, so we can't stand back now, we must be with them, and I think one of the things we must not allow is a failure of courage. It's extremely important we continue with this, we talk to the South African people and they understand why it is that we have taken up this moral course,' Pandor said. 'Reports of civilian casualties, alongside military personnel, are deeply troubling,' the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said. 'These actions raise serious concerns under international law, including the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the protection of civilians enshrined in the UN Charter and international humanitarian law'. Nuclear safety Phiri added that South Africa has taken note with particular concern of the implications for nuclear safety and security arising from attacks in the vicinity of nuclear facilities. 'We recall the firm stance of the IAEA General Conference, reflected in resolutions such as GC(XXIX)/RES/444 and GC(XXXIV)/RES/533, against armed attacks on peaceful nuclear installations as violations of the UN Charter and international law. 'South Africa extends its sincere condolences to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the families of all victims,' Phiri said. 'Peaceful resolutions' Phiri reiterated Pretoria's 'unwavering commitment' to the peaceful resolution of disputes. 'South Africa urges maximum restraint by all parties and calls for the urgent intensification of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote stability in the Middle East. 'We support ongoing bilateral discussions, such as those between the USA and Iran, and reaffirm the critical importance of establishing a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in the Middle East,' Phiri said. In February this year, South Africa's Head of Public Diplomacy Clayson Monyela dismissed claims of any cooperation with Iran on nuclear energy. The claims of nuclear cooperation between South Africa and Iran were levelled by US President Donald Trump's administration in an executive order on 7 February 2025.
