5 bounced cheques leave developer owing BD22,500
Five bounced cheques have landed a real estate company and its owner with a BD22,500 court bill, tied to an unpaid land and equipment deal worth BD50,000.
The High Commercial Court found that the firm had failed to pay the full sum agreed in a contract for the transfer of a plot and machinery.
The defendants were ordered to cover the remaining amount, along with yearly interest of 4 per cent from the date the claim was filed, and to pay legal costs and court fees.
Lawyer Mohammed Al Mahdi, representing the seller, said his client had agreed to hand over the land and equipment for BD50,000. Part of the money arrived. The rest did not.
Balance
To settle the balance, the company owner — named as the second defendant — wrote five cheques on behalf of the company, totalling BD22,500.
When the seller presented them at the bank, all five were returned unpaid. That led to the legal action.
The court examined the documents and found a signed contract between the seller and both the second and third defendants.
It confirmed the transfer and the price. The signatures were not disputed.
Letters
The file also included two letters from the seller to the Jaafari Waqf Directorate.
One asked that the remaining lease term for the plot be passed to the second defendant. The other requested a new lease agreement in the second defendant's name, following the transfer.
The court concluded that a deal had been struck and that the two defendants had not kept their side of it.

MPs push to raise jobless pay to 80%
TDT | Manama A proposal to raise unemployment payments from 60 to 80 per cent of a person's previous wage is being studied by Parliament's Services Committee, with a top limit of BD1,000 per month. The suggested law, put forward by MPs Basma Mubarak, Hanan Fardan, Ahmed Al Salloom, Lulwa Al Romaihi, and Mamdouh Al Saleh, seeks better financial cover for people who have lost their jobs. According to a memorandum explaining the draft, the existing 60 per cent payout 'falls short of providing enough support,' making the lift to 80 per cent essential 'for improving the financial and social wellbeing of unemployed Bahrainis.' The document also points out that this shift would strengthen the Kingdom's social safety net, as laid down in Article 5(c) of the Constitution, ensuring state-backed help for those facing joblessness, old age, or disability. Higher living expenses and growing household debts were also mentioned by the MPs as key reasons why greater financial aid has become necessary for those who have lost their main income.

Electronic payment now mandatory for all Bahrain businesses
Every business in Bahrain must give customers a way to pay by card or phone from today, as the Ministry of Industry and Commerce brings in rules that make e-payment a requirement for every trade licence. Each firm must open one bank account in its own name, lodge the details on the ministry's Sijilat register and channel all takings through that account; personal accounts are not allowed. Any payment outside the registered account will break the law. Penalties in Article 20 of the Commercial Registry Law run from a six-month freeze on the licence to daily fines of up to BD1,000 for a first breach, rising to BD2,000 for a second within three years. Daily fines may add up to BD50,000, and a one-off levy can reach BD100,000. The rule applies to sole traders and companies alike, whatever the number of branches. The ministry says the change will make cash flows easier to trace, protect buyers from online fraud and nudge the market towards cash-free trade. By tying payments to business accounts it also hopes to strengthen checks on value-added tax and other dues.
