National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS) Honours 86 Graduates at Prestigious Healthcare Ceremony
The National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS) celebrated the graduation of 86 newly qualified healthcare professionals this morning during a formal ceremony held at the International Conference Centre Seychelles (ICCS).
Presided over by His Excellency President Wavel Ramkalawan and First Lady Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, the event was graced by several high-ranking officials, including the Speaker of National Assembly Mr. Roger Mancienne, Minister for Health, Mrs. Peggy Vidot; Minister for Education, Dr. Justin Valentin; Minister for Employment and Social Affairs, Mrs. Patricia Francourt; and Minister for Youth, Sports and Family, Mrs. Marie Celine Zialor
The graduates, drawn from seven disciplines,Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Emergency Medical Care, Environmental Health Sciences, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Health Care Assistance, represent the next generation of Seychelles' healthcare workforce.
A highlight of the morning was the presentation of special awards recognising academic distinction, leadership, and clinical excellence. Mr. Jean Luc Rose, a graduate of the Diploma in Emergency Medical Care programme, was named Outstanding Graduate, earning the coveted President's Cup, along with a laptop and a government-sponsored scholarship. Mr. Rose was commended for his academic performance, leadership, and commitment to student life.
Further accolades included the Overall Best Academic Award, presented to Ms. Solana Marie from the Diploma in Environmental Health Sciences programme, and the Ministry of Health's Overall Best in Practice Award, received by Ms. Ramlah Heneka from the Biomedical Laboratory Science cohort.
Delivering the welcome address, NIHSS Director Mr. Ebrahim Ali described the occasion as 'a significant milestone not only for our students but for the future of healthcare in our country." He reiterated the Institute's core values—accountability, integrity, pursuit of excellence, respect, empowerment, scientific rigour, engagement, and teamwork—as guiding principles in building a resilient and responsive health system.
"The transition from academic life to the workplace brings about real challenges but also presents great opportunities to be creative and apply innovative practices," Mr. Ali said, urging graduates to serve with compassion and commitment.
The ceremony was punctuated by musical interludes from the NIHSS Choir, an inspiring speech from a former graduate, and a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Ramlah Heneka. The event concluded with a commemorative group photograph capturing the graduates alongside dignitaries and faculty members.

'More than ceremony': UAE minister honours 50 people of determination upon graduating
Fifty young men and women with disabilities walked proudly across the stage in Ajman, celebrating a moment many thought might never come - they were graduating. The Ministry of Family held a special ceremony at the Cultural Centre in Ajman to honour 50 students, all of whom completed training at disability care and rehabilitation centres across the UAE. The graduates came from Dubai, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Dibba Fujairah. For the first time, they were joined by students from the 'Mashaghel Rehabilitation Centres' vocational training programme, creating a shared celebration of hard work and progress. Sana Suhail, Minister of Family, honoured each graduate personally. These students had taken a path that required strength, not just physically, but emotionally. Through their academic and professional training, they showed that disabilities do not stop dreams. Their journey has become an example for many others. Once students complete the programme, they can move into vocational work, take on small projects, or prepare to enter the job market. Nigeria, Africa bear 25% of global disease burden — Expert
An Executive Consultant with over 25 years of clinical research and data management experience in the United States of America, Dr Bisi Adekoya, has disclosed that Nigeria—and Africa generally—shares 25 percent of the global disease burden. Adekoya, who is the Founder of a clinical research company called NxtCRO, made this disclosure at a symposium titled Clinical Trials in Underserved Populations: Barriers and Strategies for Inclusion, held on Thursday at the University of Lagos. She explained that disease burden comprises deaths (mortality), disability (years lived with illness), economic cost, and overall reduction in quality of life. Similarly, the expert lamented that more than half of pharmaceutical ingredients in Nigeria, and 100 percent of vaccines, are imported. She pointed out that Nigeria is a country at risk if it cannot produce and consume pharmaceutically. 'It has been gathered that Africa shares 25 percent of the global disease burden. 'Disease burden comprises deaths (mortality), disability (years lived with illness), economic cost, and overall reduction in quality of life. 'In the same vein, it is shocking that Nigeria imports 85–100 percent of pharmaceutical ingredients and 100 percent of vaccines (biopharmaceuticals), and 85 percent of marketed medications. 'Nigeria is a country currently at risk if we cannot produce and consume pharmaceutically,' she said. Meanwhile, Adekoya called on the Federal Government to look inwards towards the local production of pharmaceutical products. She also advocated for the conduct of clinical trials within the country and the collection of local data for the survival and advancement of the country's health sector.
