Many Americans are prioritizing their wellness, but who they trust with it is another matter entirely.
Why it matters: Small health businesses — which the public generally sees as reliable — are experiencing growth at a time when federal health messages are all over the place.
What they're saying:"Consumers have a high level of trust for small brands" in health because they often have mission-based origin stories and "business-for-good" ethos, says Sherry Frey, VP of total wellness at consumer intelligence firm NielsenIQ.
Meanwhile, many Americans distrust public figures on health-related topics, according to a recent Axios-Ipsos poll.
And they had more trust in friends and family than in government leaders — and journalists, for that matter — when it came to health issues, a 2024 survey shows.
But Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has positioned himself as a champion of small businesses — particularly in the " crunchy mom" health space.
Zoom in: Small food and drink businesses focused on health and sustainability are specifically seeing increased growth — according to NIQ data from September 2023 to September 2024 shared with Axios.
The fine print: NIQ defines a small business as having less than $200 million in sales.
What we're watching: AI has the potential to help small businesses grow, but at the moment, the upfront investment is too high for many companies.

File Photo by Oliver Contreras/UPI | License Photo June 23 (UPI) -- Major American insurers announced Monday that they have agreed to speed up and smooth out the processes involved with the reception and administration of health care by streamlining the prior authorization process. The AHIP health insurance industry trade association explained in a press release that dozens of large insurers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Cigna and UnitedHealthCare have voluntarily agreed to "streamline, simplify and reduce prior authorization," a move intended to better connect patients to necessary care while cutting down on the clerical loads of providers. "The health care system remains fragmented and burdened by outdated manual processes, resulting in frustration for patients and providers alike," said AHIP President and CEO Mike Tuffin. According to the companies, 257 million Americans should benefit from the changes, which will be implemented across markets, and include commercial coverage and some Medicare and Medicaid plans. "Health plans are making voluntary commitments to deliver a more seamless patient experience and enable providers to focus on patient care, while also helping to modernize the system," he added. Prior authorization requires that providers attain approval from a patient's insurance company before they can conduct services or treatments. The press release said that such authorizations can lead to the denial or delays of medically necessary care, while also causing "physician burnout." The plan is to create a "common standard" in regard to the submission of electronic prior authorization requests by the beginning of 2027, at which point at least 80% of authorization request approvals will be receive real time responses. Individual plans will also reduce claim types that are subject to prior authorization requests by 2026. "We are encouraged by this collective commitment to reform prior authorization practices," said Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Academy of Family Physicians Shawn Martin. "Physicians have long advocated for reforms that help ensure that patients receive timely, medically necessary care and reduce administrative burden, including the elimination of unnecessary prior authorizations." However, prior authorizations aren't going away, and insurers involved with the change are scheduled to meet with U.S. Heath and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz Monday.

Companies enter market development agreement for novel approach to reducing toxic elements in food DENVER and GROTON, Conn., June 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Wilbur-Ellis, a leading provider of innovative solutions for agriculture, announced today that it has entered a US market development agreement with Talam Biotech, a biological technologies start-up, for Talam's natural microbial approach to reducing heavy metal uptake by crops. Heavy metals occur naturally in the environment and are also a result of human activity. They enter the food supply through the water and soil used to grow crops. Improving the understanding of the content and exposure of arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury in food and their impact on human health has increased consumer concerns and regulatory scrutiny around the world. An International Food and Information Council survey of US consumers released last fall found that 64 percent of Americans are 'very or extremely concerned' about heavy metals in food, with presence in baby food being the top ranking concern. This report also shows that among this group of consumers, half say they have changed their eating habits as a result. Early in 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration released action levels for lead in baby food. At the same time, California's Bill AB899 introducing requirements for testing and disclosure of heavy metals in baby foods went into effect. Maryland, Virginia, and Illinois have approved similar Bills to California's in the last few months. Talam anticipates commercial launch of a wheat product in 2027. Additional products for vegetables, grains, and root crops will follow. What Is ACIP? Inside the CDC Vaccine Panel in the National Spotlight

How will the newly ACIP operate? We'll soon find out. A once-obscure federal committee is now at the center of a political firestorm. This week the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which has helped guide national vaccine policy since the 1960s, will hold its first meeting since all 17 of its members were abruptly dismissed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The move—and the appointment of new members known for controversial views—has raised alarm among public health professionals and has brought national attention to a group that few Americans had previously heard of. What is ACIP, why does its work matter and how does it impact families and communities across the country? Here's a quick overview. What is the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)? ACIP is a scientific advisory panel that helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) decide who should get which vaccines and when, and its recommendations also shape decisions about what insurers and Medicaid programs will cover. The committee makes recommendations about vaccines that have been approved or authorized for use by the Food and Drug Administration. These recommendations typically inform final, official recommendations that are made by the CDC director, though the director is not required to adopt the recommendations. What is the purpose of ACIP? ACIP's mission is to guide how vaccines are used in the United States, based on scientific evidence, public health need and practical implementation. At the time the Office of the Surgeon General created ACIP in 1964, several new vaccines for diseases such as measles and polio had been developed and made available to the public for the first time. The minutes of the first ACIP meeting explained its purpose as follows: 'The Committee shall concern itself with immunization schedules, dosages and routes of administration and indications and contraindications for the use of these Committee shall also provide advice as to the relative priority of various population groups to whom the agents should be made available and shall advise regarding the relative merits and methods for conducting mass immunization programs." Why does the work of ACIP matter? Almost all insurers cover vaccines recommended by ACIP and the CDC, typically with no cost to patients. So ACIP's recommendations directly affect whether vaccines are accessible and affordable, especially for children, low-income families and underserved communities. How does ACIP operate and how does it ensure transparency? ACIP operates under strict transparency rules. Its meetings, typically held three times a year, are public, votes are recorded and conflicts of interest must be disclosed in advance. If conflicts do arise, those members must recuse themselves from related votes. The public has an opportunity to weigh in both prior to and during the meetings. Who serves on ACIP, and how are its members appointed? ACIP is typically composed of vaccine experts appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, such as scientists, physicians and epidemiologists. By law, they cannot be federal government employees or be employed by vaccine manufacturers. Instead, they have a 'special government employee' designation to avoid conflicts of interest, especially financial ones. A consumer representative serves on the committee, as do non-voting representatives from organizations that can help inform their deliberations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Prospective committee members typically undergo an extensive vetting process; once named, they are appointed to serve four-year terms. Why did Secretary Kennedy fire the 17 current ACIP members? What do we know about their replacements? Secretary Kennedy said he dismissed all 17 ACIP members because the panel was 'plagued with persistent conflicts of interest' and had become 'a rubber stamp for any vaccine.' Major medical groups strongly rejected that claim. The American Academy of Pediatrics called their removal an 'unprecedented' and said it reflected 'an escalating effort…to silence independent medical expertise and stoke distrust in lifesaving vaccines.' While Secretary Kennedy praised the new appointees as 'highly credentialed,' several of them have publicly questioned the safety and effectiveness of vaccines—positions that conflict with decades of scientific consensus. AAP said the appointments 'represent a radical departure from ACIP's core mission.' On June 22, it was reported that several groups—including AAP, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Pharmacists Association, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and some health insurers—are considering creating an alternate vaccine panel. What's next for ACIP? ACIP's next meeting, on June 25-27, will be the first test of how the newly reconstituted panel will operate, and how much of their work adheres to scientific integrity. With some pediatric groups and public health organizations considering alternate paths, national vaccine policy may be headed into uncharted territory.
