Telangana objects to AP's plan to draw Polavaram dead storage water; calls it unauthorised

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has raised strong objections against the Andhra Pradesh government's reported plans to construct a new Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) drawing water from the dead storage of the Polavaram Irrigation Project.
The Telangana government has called on the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) to take immediate action as mandated under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA), 2014.
On Saturday, Engineer-in-Chief (General) G Anil Kumar wrote a letter — a copy of which was accessed by TNIE — addressed to the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) and the GRMB to prevent the proposal from moving forward.
This objection comes in the wake of a news report published in a vernacular daily on May 21, which stated that the Andhra Pradesh government plans to lift water from a 35-metre level in the dead storage of the Polavaram reservoir during the current financial year. The report cited G.O. RT No. 134, issued on April 19, 2021, as the basis for the plan.

Kaleshwaram probe: Engineer-in-Chief who ‘favoured' tainted Executive Engineer shunted

HYDERABAD: The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, often in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, appears to have claimed another senior official. The state government on Friday transferred Irrigation Engineer-in-Chief (General) G Anil Kumar, directing him to report to the government. Orders to this effect were issued by Irrigation Principal Secretary Rahul Bojja. Chief Engineer (Inquiries) Mohd Amjad Hussain has been given full additional charge of the post of Engineer-in-Chief (General). The order did not mention the reason for Anil Kumar's transfer. However, sources in the department said he had allegedly favoured Irrigation Executive Engineer Nune Sridhar, who was recently arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to talk LAC during China visit on June 25-26

NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Defence Ministers Meeting (SCO-DMM) in Qingdao, China. Notably, Singh and Pakistan Defence Minister Khwaja Asif will be attending the SCO meeting, marking the first such occasion since Operation Sindoor. However, no bilateral meeting is planned with Asif. Coincidentally, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, on Friday, flagged off the first batch of Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims since the 2020 India-China border standoff on Sikkim. It is seen as a step to ameliorate the bilateral situation. Ten batches plan to visit Kailash Mansarovar from Nathu la this year. Singh is expected to hold bilateral meetings, including talks with his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun, and Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov. The Defence Minister last met the Admiral at the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus forum in Vientiane, in November last year. The meeting is expected to add to the relationship normalisation process between India and China which continue to jointly deploy more than one lakh soldiers with equipment and armaments along the 832-km Eastern Ladakh since May 2020. The news was first reported by TNIE.

Dalai Lama may name reincarnation on July 2

BENGALURU: Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama will make an important announcement, most likely on his reincarnation, on July 2, four days before he turns 90 on July 6. Speaking to TNIE, Sikyong (President), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Penpa Tsering said the Dalai Lama will make an 'important announcement on July 2. It is likely to be about his reincarnation'. Dalai Lama is scheduled to meet senior leaders of the four Buddhist sects -- Sakya, Kagyu, Nyingma and Gelug -- between July 2 and 4 at Dharamshala, the headquarters of CTA. While Dalai Lama's reincarnation is the most anticipated decision keenly awaited not only by Tibetans but people in the Himalayan region, from Lhasa to Arunachal Pradesh, who look up to him as their spiritual guide, it is heavily contested by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which sees Dalai Lama as a separatist leader and a symbol of Tibetan resistance. In March 2011, the Dalai Lama relinquished his role as the political head of Tibetans in exile and handed it over to the democratically elected CTA. He had said his successor, male or female, will be born in a free world, in a clear message to PRC on its long-standing claim on having the sole right to choose the next Dalai Lama.
