Iran executes man convicted of being spy for Israel as foes trade fire for 10th day

Iran executed a man on Sunday who was convicted of being an agent for Israel's Mossad spy service, the judiciary said, as the two foes traded fire for a 10th day.
'Majid Mosayebi … was hanged this morning after going through the full process of criminal procedure and after his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court,' the judiciary's Mizan Online website said.
Mosayebi was accused of seeking to provide 'sensitive information … to Mossad'.
Iran has carried out multiple arrests of people suspected of spying for Israel since the start of its bombing campaign against the Islamic republic on June 13.
Later on Sunday, judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said three people had been arrested in the western province of Kermanshah on allegations of
espionage
The arrests were made thanks to 'the rapid presence of the population and their assistance to the intelligence services, law enforcement agencies and judicial officers', he said.

China hits out at US and Israel, calls for de-escalation of conflict with Iran

China sharply criticised the United States and Israel on Sunday, calling on them to de-escalate their conflict with Iran , prioritise civilian safety and adhere to international law as Mideast anxiety intensified following the US attack on three Iranian nuclear facilities using massive 'bunker buster' bombs. Advertisement Washington has violated Iranian sovereignty, 'exacerbated tensions in the Middle East and dealt a heavy blow to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime', said China's United Nations ambassador Fu Cong at a UN Security Council emergency meeting , its third in 10 days. 'The international community must uphold justice and make concrete efforts to cool down the situation and restore peace and stability,' Fu added. While the council's five permanent members with veto power and 10 non-permanent members without cited the importance of ending the conflict in broad terms, their statements quickly divided along geopolitical lines, with China and Russia defending Iran, the US and its allies defending Israel, and each side censuring the other. 03:22 Trump announces US attack on Iran nuclear sites Trump announces US attack on Iran nuclear sites While Beijing's criticism of the US attack – a complex operation that targeted Iran's Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan sites using GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator bombs from B-2 aircraft – was largely couched in diplomatic niceties, Moscow felt little compunction to hold back.

Democrats lash out at ‘erratic' Trump over Iran strikes, demand vote to rein in war powers

Democrats bristled on Sunday over US President Donald Trump's decision to launch air strikes on Iran without seeking authorisation from Congress, accusing the Republican of violating the constitution and demanding a vote to rein in his war powers. Advertisement Members of the Senate and House of Representatives argued that US intelligence had not shown an imminent threat from the Middle Eastern country that justified Trump's unilateral action. 'President Trump's actions in bombing Iran puts the US on the brink of a wider war in the Middle East, all without constitutionally required Congressional approval,' Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin said in a statement. Democrats were divided between those demanding a vote on a war powers resolution to constrain Trump's authority to launch further action and a smaller group, who maintained that the strikes were grounds for the Republican leader's impeachment. They included Illinois moderate Sean Casten and New York leftist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who accused the president of having 'impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations'. Advertisement Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leaders in the Senate and House respectively, said Trump had 'dramatically increased' America's risk of becoming embroiled in a new Middle Eastern conflagration. 'No president should be allowed to unilaterally march this nation into something as consequential as war with erratic threats and no strategy,' Schumer said.

Suicide bomber kills at least 15 during mass at Syrian church in Damascus

At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighbourhood of Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday, security sources said. Syria's interior ministry said the suicide bomber was affiliated with Islamic State . He entered the Christian church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest, the ministry said in a statement. A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two men were involved in the attack, including the one who blew himself up. Medical sources said the attack killed 15 and injured 25. Some local media reported that children were among the casualties. A live stream from the site by Syria's civil defence, the White Helmets, showed scenes of destruction from within the church, including a bloodied floor and shattered church pews and masonry. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive to oust president Bashar al-Assad before taking over in January for a transitional phase, has repeatedly said he will protect minorities during his tenure.
