J&K Legal Metrology Department launches crackdown on dry fruit sellers
Jammu, May 21 (UNI) In response to increasing consumer complaints and to ensure adherence to fair trade practices, the Legal Metrology Department, Jammu and Kashmir, launched a comprehensive enforcement drive targeting traders and distributors of dry fruits across all districts of the Union Territory.
Anuradha Gupta, Controller, Legal Metrology Department, J&K, here on Thursday, said that the crackdown focused on addressing issues of short weighment and the absence of mandatory declarations on product packaging.
She said that special enforcement teams were constituted to conduct surprise inspections across all districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
During the UT wide drive, a total of 244 traders were inspected, out of which 63 traders were booked for violations, said the Controller adding that these included supplying underweight packaged dry fruits and failing to display mandatory labeling information, including net weight, MRP, date of packaging, and manufacturer details, as required under Rule 6 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities)
Rules, 2011.
"This drive underscores our commitment to ensuring that only those packages that are exact in terms of net quantity, and which strictly adhere to Legal Metrology guidelines, are made available to consumers. Such drives will continue in the future as well," said Anuradha Gupta.
The Department has issued a strict advisory to all dry fruit sellers, warning them against selling non-compliant packaged commodities, she said, adding, "Violators will face stringent legal action under the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act."
In addition, consumers have been particularly advised to carefully check the net weight and labeling on packaged goods before purchasing. Public awareness and vigilance play a crucial role, said the Controller.
She said, "being informed about one's rights and responsibilities as a consumer is essential for avoiding exploitation and ensuring fair trade.
Consumers are urged to report any discrepancies in packaged goods."
"Complaints can be lodged through the LMD toll-free helpline: 1800-180-7114 or via official social media handles. The Department remains active on social media platforms to promptly address public grievances and raise consumer awareness," said the Controller.

Ludhiana: It's been more than two years since the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments (First Amendment) Rules, 2023 made it mandatory for shops and commercial establishments to have signboards in Gurmukhi Punjabi positioned "prominently" before any other language and occupying more space, most of them are yet to comply with it. Since the fine amount in Punjab is quite low, that is why the approach towards implementation of these rules is also too lax." District language officer Sandeep Sharma said they are ensuring that all govt buildings have the names in Punjabi displayed prominently. When asked, assistant labour commissioner Sarbjot Singh Sidhu too said it is being ensured that all new establishments have their name boards in Punjabi. "Majority of the bigger showrooms or MNCs have their names in Punjabi. Whenever a licence is given, it is part of the checklist to ensure that the names are in Punjabi. Whenever we receive any complaint regarding this, we educate and sensitise them so that they update the names in Gurmukhi as per rules. It is a shared responsibility of other departments, including ours, the language and GST departments as well," he added.

Punjab: BKI terror module operated by UK-based handler busted, One held
Chandigarh, June 21 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, Amritsar Commissionerate Police has dismantled a Pakistan-backed Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) terror module being operated by UK-based handler Dharam Singh alias Dharma Sandhu with the arrest of a local operative and recovered six sophisticated foreign-made pistols from his possession, said DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Saturday. The arrested accused has been identified as Onkar Singh alias Nawab of village Jalalusma in Amritsar. The weapons, smuggled via drones from across the Indo-Pak border, includes four 9MM Glock pistols and two .30 bore PX5 pistols. DGP Yadav said that the foreign-based handler Dharam Singh alias Dharma Sandhu, who has been operating the terror module, is a close associate of Pak-based terrorist Harvinder Singh alias Rinda. Further investigations are underway to establish forward and backward linkages in this case and unearth the broader network, he said. Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that the arrest followed precise intelligence and coordination. "The accused disclosed during interrogation that the weapons were delivered via drones and were meant for disruptive activities," he added. He said that preliminary investigations revealed the accused was part of a sleeper cell activated by foreign-based handlers to destabilise the state. "The weapons were to be distributed among local operatives to execute targeted killings and terror activities in state. We are working to uncover the entire network and its international linkages," said the CP, while adding that further investigations are underway to identify other accomplices and handlers. Two arrested in Rs 74 lakh investment fraud case by Hyd cyber-crime police
Hyderabad, June 21 (UNI) Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have arrested two individuals from Pune, Maharashtra for their involvement in an online investment scam that defrauded a 65-year-old man from Tolichowki of Rs 74.36 lakh. Police seized two mobile phones, four SIM cards, and two cheque books from their possession. Based on a complaint, the Cyber Crime Police arrested Rushikesh Jaywant Kamble from Pune and Sohel Mohammad Sultan Shaikh from Maharashtra, according to a police statement on Saturday. The accused lured the victim via WhatsApp, sending a fake trading application link under the name "Abott Wealth Management" and promised high returns on investments. Trusting their claims, the victim deposited the amount, only to discover later that the app was blocked and communication severed. A case was registered under multiple sections of the IT Act and BNS, leading to the arrests.
