FRIDAY
12pm A 30-minute drive from Lisbon airport and I'm at Penha Longa Resort (from £242, ritzcarlton.com). Forget its renowned golf courses, I'm here for the pair of Michelin-starred restaurants and, given its spot in Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, forest walks – plus a monastery.
1.30pm Hammock tested (I have a garden suite), it's Mediterranean tapas time at Arola, in the resort. Port pairings at its artisanal chocolate shop follow. The pastel de nata chocs rock. And the sardine-filled ones? I blame the port for my bravery and verdict: 'Ooh, creamy!'
4pm Time to visit the 14th-century monastery to marvel at its architecture and fancy myself as a monk in its kitchen. Next? An 'hour's walk' to recharge my city-weary soul with the magic of the surrounding natural park. Two hours later I'm back, no longer lost, just exhausted.
7pm At Michelin-starred Lab, the taster menu (from £134) is pure theatre: first up, a ceramic cockerel is moved around a table etched with a map of Portugal – where it stops, regional bites are served. Later, geisha dolls proffer oyster tempura, and cured yolk comes gold leafed.
SATURDAY
9am After brekkie it's a 15-minute drive to the Portuguese riviera for a boat tour of Cascais bay. We hear of the town's history as a magnet for European royals and – in the war – spies, including James Bond writer Ian Fleming, who found inspo for Casino Royale here.
12pm On to Cascais's cobbled streets and farmers' market, where crockery, clothes and unfeasibly large tomatoes await. Next – call it my starter! – ice cream at Portugal's best-known spot Santinis, then lunch at the marina's Marisco na Praça to mainline lobster rice (£40 for two).
2pm I've never experienced wind like it – standing at Cabo da Roca, a headland known for its gusts and being Europe's western-most point. I try (and fail) to spy New York across the Atlantic, so head to Boca do Inferno (Mouth of Hell), a cave created by the sea's waves.
7pm Dinner is at the resort's Midori restaurant, Portugal's only Michelin-starred Japanese. Hidden behind a secret door and seating just 18, its Japanese flavours with Portuguese soul warrant a hail of chef's kisses (tasting menu from £134). My usual M&S sushi can't compete.
SUNDAY
7am It's early but I can't resist another (short!) walk – just me, birdsong and a few robot mowers out there – before yoga in the meditation garden (above). A massage at the spa, a dip in the pool and, go on then, a round of golf before the airport. Crazy golf, that is.

TRAVEL: How to spend a weekend in sunny St Tropez
FRIDAY 4pm An hour's drive from Nice airport, I arrive at my hotel Arev (from £495 per night, in St Tropez. The name is a play on the French word for dream, rêve – and what a dream it is. My room has a garden view, Japanese Toto toilet and Dyson hairdryer. 7pm At Fondugues Pradugues, a natural wine domain in the neighbouring village of Ramatuelle, we try organic red and rosé wines at Le Chai, its restaurant overlooking the vines. Chef Valentine Costuna whips up a four-course tasting menu (£105pp, SATURDAY 8am The view of the heated outdoor pool tempts me out of my canopy bed and into my swimsuit. After working up an appetite, I slip into something a little more breakfast-appropriate, grab a table in the shade and enjoy the eggs benedict (served on a waffle). 11am A stroll away, at place des Lices (from the medieval word for jousting ground), is the town square's famous market (held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 8am to 1pm), where I check out the local delicacies and browse the antiques, linen wear and basket bags. 1pm Lunch is at The Strand, an old St Tropez favourite brought back to life by Arev with the help of famous French hospitality brand Bagatelle. I opt for the avocado salad with raspberries, and leave room for the tarte tropézienne, a cream-filled brioche bun. 3pm Time to recline by the pool while I await a full-body massage. With just two treatment rooms and a hammam, appointments at the spa are coveted. I tell the therapist about my 'tech neck' and she adapts our 50-minute session. Afterwards, I feel re-energised. 8pm Insta-hot bohemian interiors, plenty of outdoor seating and live music – there are lots of reasons locals flock to Le Café, but its unpretentious brasserie food tops the list. I have the shredded crab (£30) and filet de bœuf with peppercorn sauce (£45, SUNDAY 9am Anyone for padel? After brushing up on my backhand skills on the hotel's courts, I walk into town to enjoy a delicious, if pricey, iced vanilla matcha latte (£6.75) and pain suisse (£10), from Cedric Grolet & Airelles ( to tide me over until lunch.

Fighter jets scrambled to Brit TUI flight to Lanzarote after terrifying bomb threat note is found in toilet
HOLIDAYMAKERS were left terrified after a bomb threat note was found on a Brit TUI flight from Cardiff to Lanzarote - forcing fighter jets to scramble. Cheryl Sainsbury, 43 and her pals, from Pontypridd, were all smiles en route to the Canaries - until the pilot made a chilling mid-air announcement. 6 6 6 While flying over Portugal on Thursday morning, Welsh pals Cheryl, Leanne Thomas, Cherie Gurner and Tara Pumford were stunned when the pilot announced the plane must land urgently due to reports of a "device" on board. Cheryl said: "We were sort of looking at each other thinking 'what's he on about'? "We were all scared but there was no sense of panic as such on board. Everybody seemed to come together and just looked out for each other. We all wanted to make sure everyone was ok." Everyone was told to remain in their seats. The crew searched under the seats and in the overhead lockers to check that all the luggage was accounted for. Cheryl said: "I think they were looking for a black rucksack." Passengers reportedly tried to message loved ones to tell them what was happening as they anxiously waited for updates from the cabin crew. The group initially thought someone had phoned in a bomb threat - only later did they learn a handwritten note was found by a crew member in one of the aircraft's toilets. The pilot then announced a risk assessment had been done and the threat was deemed low, meaning the plane would no longer be landing earlier in Portugal. But for everyone's safety, two Portuguese fighter jets escorted the plane to its destination of Arrecife in Lanzarote. 6 6 Harrowing moment plane comes terrifyingly close to helicopter as it takes off at airport Cheryl said: "Once we landed on the ground, it was the biggest celebration and sense of relief. "We were taken to a remote part of the airport and there were police and fire engines surrounding the plane. We had to get off one-by-one." The group then had to wait for the emergency services on the ground to check through the luggage before they were allowed to leave. Cheryl explained: "We had to stand on the tarmac with all the luggage but we weren't allowed to touch of any of it. "They brought sniffer dogs and the bomb squad so we just had to stand their and watch before they let us on the bus. "We got taken to some form of compound where there were no refreshments and just one toilet. "We just had to wait their until they had approval from the police to let us go to get back to the normal part of the airport where we could go through immigration and collect our cases." The friends are now unwinding in Lanzarote with a drink or two to help 'settle their nerves' after the ordeal. They are due to fly back home on Sunday - and are hoping that flight will be less eventful. Cheryl said: "It was such a weird experience especially as I'm a quite anxious flyer so I don't know how we did it. Even though we were all scared, we just stuck together and tried to keep it calm." She added that the cabin crew from TUI remained calm and were "brilliant" with all the passengers. Specialists from the GEDEX (Explosives Deactivation Group), the Fiscal and Border Section, investigation units and citizen security patrols all intervened, as reported by The Sun on Thursday. The inspection found no explosive device on board. Flight BY6422 landed at Lanzarote airport at around 10.55am on Thursday. A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport said: 'We are aware of an incident involving flight TOM6422 from Cardiff to Lanzarote on 19/06/25. "The safety of our passengers is our number one priority. No concerns or suspicious activity were raised prior to departure.' Spain 's Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine who wrote the note. The force stressed that this type of act is a serious crime, as it causes alarm, compromises public safety and forces specialised resources to be used. TUI has been contacted for comment. 6
